Chapter 1 Present facilities, equipment and natural condition 1.1 The Canal The Suez Canal is a waterway of 162.25km in length, which bridges the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. North and South Approaches are set at both ends of the Canal. Timsah Lake, the Great Bitter Lake and the Little Bitter Lake are situated along the Canal. Layout of the Canal is shown in Figure 1.1.1. GEORGE EDWARDS GB165-0533 Reference code: GB165-0533 Title: George Edwards Collection Name of creator: Edwards, George Robert (1903-1988) Lance Corporal Royal Engineers Dates of creation of material: 1940-1944 Level of description: Fonds Extent: 1 box Biographical history: Edwards, George Robert (1903-1988) Lance Corporal Royal Engineers George Edwards was born in 1903 in Sutton, Surrey which is now called the London Borough of Sutton and lived there all his life. He was the second eldest of 10 children and he and four of his brothers fought in World War Two, all survived the war. George Edwards was a skilled amateur photographer, and engineer. He was married to Annie (Nan) nee Burdfield and they had one son, John, who was killed in a motorcycle accident in London in the 1970's. He was a Church Warden for the church of St Nicholas in Sutton and worked for the Gas Board. After retirement his hobbies were breeding budgerigars and growing vegetables in his garden. He served in the Royal Engineers throughout the war which he spent in Libya, Egypt, Syria and Palestine. He was associated with R.E.M.E. 1 Base workshop, at some time according to an undated inscription on a tankard presented to him by the Corporals Club there. He was a very kind and tolerant man. He died in 1988. Scope and content: 3 photograph albums from George Robert Edwards’ Army service in the Royal Engineers covering Egypt, Libya, Syria and Palestine 1940-1944, including photographs of ancient and touristic sites in all four countries, street scenes and scenes of local life, fellow soldiers, the Suez Canal, the Nile, cities, photographs from the war, including armaments, wrecked vehicles and casualties, scenes from the King’s Birthday celebrations and scenes from the Holy Land. -

Bull Brothers – Robert and Henry
EMU PARK SOLDIERS OF WORLD WAR I – THE GREAT WAR FROM EMU PARK and SHIRE OF LIVINGSTONE The Bull Brothers – Robert and Henry Sergeant Robert Charles Bull (Service No. 268) of the 15th Infantry Battalion and 1st Battalion Imperial Camel Brigade Robert was born on 17th May 1895 in a railway camp at Boolburra, the 9th child and 3rd son to Henry and Maria (née Ferguson) Bull, both immigrants from the United Kingdom. Henry from Whaplode, Lincolnshire, arrived in Rockhampton in 1879 at the age of 19. Maria was from Cookstown, Tyrone, North Ireland, arrived in Maryborough, also in 1879 and also aged 19. Robert spent his early years at Bajool before joining the Railway Service as a locomotive cleaner. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) on 16 September 1914 at Emerald where he gave his age as 21 years & 4 months, when in fact he was only 19 years & 4 months. Private Bull joined ‘B’ Company of the 15th Infantry Battalion, 4th Brigade which formed the Australian and New Zealand Division when they arrived in Egypt. The 15th Infantry Battalion consisted on average of 29 Officers and 1007 Other Ranks (OR’s) and was broken up into the following sub units: Section Platoon Company Battalion Rifle section:- Platoon Headquarters Company Battalion 10 OR’s (1 Officer & 4 OR’s) Headquarters (2 Headquarters (5 Officers & 57 Officers & 75 OR’s) Lewis Gun Section:- 10 3 Rifle Sections and OR’s) OR’s and 1 Lewis gun Section 4 Companies 1 Light Machine Gun 4 Platoons He sailed for Egypt aboard the HMAT (A40) Ceramic on 22nd December 1914. -

This study reports the microplankton found occurring in the surface water of the Bitter Lake at monthly intervals from November 2008 until November 2009. A total of 130 taxa were identified, among which 67 taxa were of Bacillariophyceae, 15 Dinophyceae, 11 Chlorophyceae, 11 Cyanophyceae, 1 Euglenophyceae, 18 Tintinnidae, 4 Foraminiferidae, as well as 3 of Rotifera. Species diversity, numerical abundances and dynamics were analyzed for each taxon at three sites inside the Bitter Lake. At each of these sites Bacillariophyceae were predominant in the standing crop forming -1 67.2% of the total microplankton community with an average of 11,594 ind. L . -

This book will not reveal them; it is too personal. In any case the writer has not the faculty for revealing them. They scorn publicity; but someone ought to give it them—not for their sake, but for the sake of their Nation. Our Infantrymen in France have got to be known in the world. For one thing, they fought beside the British and Americans and French who acknowledged their worth and made it public. British acknowledgment of them alone has spread their fame. Most generous praise they have had from British General Headquarters. Nothing of the sort have the Light Horsemen had from a similar source in Egypt. Books have been written about our men in France. A party of British journalists was once invited to come and live with the Australian Corps there. The praise given by them was almost idealistic. Our Force in France has had Australian correspondents with it ever since it moved there; it was not until late, when the Sinai Campaign was over, that the Light-Horse got publicity through a correspondent. It is true that correspondent was appointed in time to do justice to their great dash in the last phase of the war in the Middle-East. -

Anderson August 2017 © 2017 i EGYPTIAN LABOR CORPS: LOGISTICAL LABORERS IN WORLD WAR I AND THE 1919 EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION Kyle J. Anderson, Ph. D. Cornell University 2017 This is a history of World War I in Egypt. But it does not offer a military history focused on generals and officers as they strategized in grand halls or commanded their troops in battle. Rather, this dissertation follows the Egyptian workers and peasants who provided the labor that built and maintained the vast logistical network behind the front lines of the British war machine. These migrant laborers were organized into a new institution that redefined the relationship between state and society in colonial Egypt from the beginning of World War I until the end of the 1919 Egyptian Revolution: the “Egyptian Labor Corps” (ELC). I focus on these laborers, not only to document their experiences, but also to investigate the ways in which workers and peasants in Egypt were entangled with the broader global political economy. The ELC linked Egyptian workers and peasants into the global political economy by turning them into an important source of logistical laborers for the British Empire during World War I. The changes inherent in this transformation were imposed on the Egyptian countryside, but workers and peasants also played an important role in the process by creating new political imaginaries, influencing state policy, and fashioning new and increasingly violent repertoires of contentious politics to engage with the ELC. -

THE STUDY PRESENTED. — .Was the organization for intelligence at British GHQ, the headquarters of the HEastern PorcefV also the HDesert Column11, such as would properly meet conditions as existed in March 1917, prior to and during the first battle of GAZA. III. HISTORICAL PACTS RELATING TO THE STUDY. ~ 1. At the olose of 1916 a British force kn*h as the HEastern Column11, under command of Lieutenant General Sir Charles Dobell, but operating directly under the control of General Sir Archibald Murray at Cairo, advanoed from the Suez Canal and by the end of February had reached El Arish, with a portion of the foree forward of Rafah, and with the cavalry occupying Khan Yunis. (l) This force as organized, consisted of three divisions of infantry (52d, 53d, 54th), two divisions of mounted troops (Australian: and New Zealand), The Imperial Camel Corps, and ai'jciliaries such as airplanes, armored oars, some tanks, and heavy artillery. (2) Following their defeat at Romani, remmants of the original Turkish forces opposed the advance of the British by fighting rear guard actions and delaying the advance at successive organized positions until finally reaching a partially organized position at Shellal, which they commenced to improve* \Z) Arrangements were made to attack the Turkish position at Shellal but on the 5th of March, British airplanes reported the enemy withdrawing from that position.
