The exceptions are outer London districts which are listed towards the end. Key Listed status Statutory listing: whether a pub building is statutorily listed or not is spelled out, together with the grade at which it is listed LPA Local planning authority: giving the name of the London borough responsible for local planning and listed building matters ✩ National Inventory: pubs which are also on CAMRA’s National Inventory of Pub interiors of Outstanding Historic Interest Public transport London is well served by public transport and few of the pubs listed are far from a bus stop, Underground or rail station. The choice is often considerable and users will have no di≤culty in easily reaching almost every pub with the aid of a street map and a transport guide. A few cautionary words The sole concern of this Regional Inventory is with the internal historic fabric of pubs – not with qualities like their atmosphere, friendliness or availability of real ale that are featured in other CAMRA pub guides. Many Regional Inventory pubs are rich in these qualities too, of course, and most of them, but by no means all, serve real ale. But inclusion in this booklet is for a pub’s physical attributes only, and is not to be construed as a recommendation in any other sense. -

If you’re fit, catch the Snowdon Sherpa bus to Pen-y-Pass and take the Pyg Track (p227). Time your descent via the Rhyd Ddu Path to catch the Welsh Highland Railway (p244) back to Caernarfon. If you’re not up for climbing, head to Llanberis and take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (p227). You’ll be up and down the mountain in 2½ hours, leaving plenty of time to check out the National Slate Museum (p230) and Dolbadarn Castle (p231) before stocking up on mead at Snowdon Honey Farm (p231). Head to Caer- narfon and watch the sunset over the Menai Strait from beside the city walls before dining at the Black Boy Inn (p235). DAY 2 // BE A PILGRIM Spend the morning exploring Caernarfon Castle (p233) before heading for the Llŷ n Peninsula. Ideally you’ll have prebooked a boat to Bardsey but if they’re not running, make do with gazing at the island from Braich-y-Pwll (p239). Abersoch (p241), Cric- cieth (p243) and Porthmadog (p244) are good places to stop for the night, but Harlech (p218) has the best restaurants – along with another World Heritage castle. DAY 3 // A SCENIC OVERLOAD Wherever you ended up, take the scenic A498 through the Pass of Aberglaslyn and back into the national park. Spend the day pottering along the route between Beddge- lert (p228) and Betws-y-Coed (p222), stopping at the lakes, lookouts and falls. -

Duration: the trail will take about 2-2½ hours – depending on our speed Start Point: St Paul’s tube station Finish Point: St Paul’s tube station 2. INTRODUCTION The walk today will take us through areas of historic interest – areas that used to be known as for a variety of trades: postal services, an agricultural market, printing and legal services. Most of these have all moved on now. The whole walk will be in areas consumed by the Great Fire of London. So what we will be looking at – able to see today – will all be post 1666. We’ll pass many city churches and if some are open we can have a quick look inside. But we have a lot of ground to cover and there is so much that we could stop and talk about but I’ll have to move you on so we can try to reach the end in about 2 hours. I will be going fairly fast because of this but please let me if I’m going too fast. I can try and answer questions as we go around but with so much history you may often get the answer “sorry, I don’t know”. Another apology now – I’m not a trained guide so don’t know of by heart the information, so I will have to read the information. -

Bangor station is served by trains from Chester, Crewe, Manchester, London Euston, Cardiff, Holyhead. From London Euston (Virgin Trains) is just 3 hours. For train times and fares, call 08457 48 49 50. by air Anglesey Airport is only 24 miles away via the A55 and provides weekday links to Cardiff, South Wales. Caernarfon Airport is less than 6 miles away and has a terminal open for private aircraft. Liverpool John Lennon airport is just 90 miles away via the M56, A55 and A487. Manchester airport is 98 miles away via the M56, A55 and A487. by sea Easily reached from Ireland via the port of Holyhead and an excellent road network. From Holyhead take the A55 leaving J9 (first exit after Britannia Bridge) onto the A487, following signs for Caernarfon. Foot passengers, onward travel is available from Holyhead to Bangor by train and then Bangor to Caernarfon by bus. -

PARLIAMENTARY GAZETTEER OF IRELAND 1844-44 [WATERFORD EXTRACTS] ABBEYSIDE, a district and town, in the barony of Decies-without-Drum, and suburban to the borough of Dungarvan, co. Waterford, Munster. The district is described by the Commissioners on municipal corporations as one of three parishes which compose the union, or manor of Dungarvan, as forming with Dungarvan- West the parish of Dungarvan mentioned in the ancient charter of the borough, and as now a distinct parish in itself; and it is laid down in one of two maps of Dungarvan in the report on Borough Boundaries, as “Abbeyside parish, now part of East Dungarvan; but, in all the other parliamentary documents before us, both it and ‘East Dungarvan’ are treated as strictly a part of Dungarvan parish.Yet in the Roman Catholic ecclesiastical division, it forms a distinct parish in the dio. of Waterford and Lismore. See Dungarvan.- The town of Abbeyside extends along the north-east or left side of Dungarvan Harbour, directly opposite to the borough; and is included in both the municipal and the parliamentary boundaries. In 1832, it had 40 tenements of value to qualify for the franchise. A very handsome bridge, built solely at the expense of the duke of Devonshire, was erected in 1816 to connect it with Dungarvan; and previous to that time communication could be maintained only by means of a ferry. The ruins of an ancient castle, and of the abbey whence the suburb is named, combine with the harbour to form a pleasant view from the Dungarvan side. The castle belonged to the Magraths, and, along with some adjacent lands, was given by them to the monks. -
