Thus, some thesis and dissertation copies are in typewriter face, while others may be from any type of computer printer. The quality of this reproduction is dependent upon the quality of the copy submitted. Broken or indistinct print, colored or poor quality illustrations and photographs, print bleedthrough, substandard margins, and improper alignment can adversely affect reproduction. In the unlikely event that the author did not send UMI a complete manuscript and there are missing pages, these will be noted. • Saint-Saëns Voyageur L’Ailleurs Est Un Puissant Moteur

  • MARIE-MAGDELEINE Composer: Jules Massenet Libretto by Louis Gallet Marie-Magdeleine Was Massenet's First Major Success And
MARIE-MAGDELEINE Composer: Jules Massenet Libretto by Louis Gallet Marie-Magdeleine was Massenet's first major success and the first of his four dramatic oratorios. It was later restaged as an opera, but was not successful in this new form. Act I At the gates of Magdala, townspeople await the coming of Jesus of Nazareth. Mary, who has given up her evil ways for Jesus, arrives; the people mock her, reminding her of her former life. Judas advises her to continue living as she had done before her conversion, but Jesus appears and chastises the crowd for judging her. Act II At Mary's house, servants are preparing for Jesus' arrival; Judas fears that his master's dining in Mary's house will allow the Pharisees to bring Jesus down with gossip, but Martha will not listen to him. Jesus arrives and sings of the beauty of repentance. The disciples arrive, and Jesus tells them that one of them will betray him; Jesus and the disciples end the act with the Lord's Prayer. Act III Jesus is dying on the cross between the two thieves. The people passing by mock him, but he only prays for their forgiveness. Mary arrives, and throws herself at the feet of the Cross, asking Jesus not to leave them. He comforts her, then dies. Act IV Mary arrives in the garden of Joseph of Arimathea to see Jesus' body, but he instead appears to her alive. Angelic voices sing a hymn of praise, and Mary leads the chorus in a song of rejoicing.

  • JULES MASSENET – His Life and Works by Nick Fuller I
JULES MASSENET – His Life and Works By Nick Fuller I. Introduction Jules Massenet’s operas made him one of the most popular composers of the late nineteenth century, his works performed throughout Europe, the Americas and North Africa. After World War I, he was seen as old- fashioned, and nearly all of his operas, apart from Werther and Manon , vanished from the mainstream repertoire. The opera-going public still know Massenet best for Manon , Werther , and the Méditation from Thaïs , but to believe, as The Grove Dictionary of Opera wrote in 1954, that ‘to have heard Manon is to have heard all of him’ is to do the composer a gross disservice. Massenet wrote twenty-seven operas, many of which are at least as good as Manon and Werther . Nearly all are theatrically effective, boast beautiful music and display insightful characterisation and an instinct for dramatic and psychological truth. In recent decades, Massenet’s work has regained popularity. Although he Figure 1 Jules Massenet, drawing by Ernesto Fontana (Source: is not the household name he once http://artlyriquefr.fr/personnages/Massenet%20Jules.html) was, and many of his operas remain little known, he has been winning new audiences. Conductors like Richard Bonynge, Julius Rudel and Patrick Fournillier have championed Massenet, while since 1990 a biennial Massenet festival has been held in his birthplace, Saint-Étienne, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, its mission to rediscover Massenet’s operas. His work has been performed in the world’s major opera houses under the baton of conductors Thomas Beecham, Colin Davis, Charles Mackerras, Michel Plasson, Riccardo Chailly and Antonio Pappano, and sung by Joan Sutherland, José van Dam, Frederica von Stade, Nicolai Gedda, Roberto Alagna, Renée Fleming, Thomas Hampson and Plácido Domingo.

  • 1873–1875: Carmen • 211
l CHAPTER NINE ; 1873 1875 – : Carmen hile Bizet was writing wind pieces and orchestrating all 1200 pages Wof Carmen, Geneviève was with him in Bougival during the summer of 1874; at least that seems to have been the arrangement they came to, however pre- carious. There is strong evidence to suggest that Geneviève was more than usually friendly with one of her husband’s friends, Élie-Miriam Delaborde, a virtuoso pia- nist whose talent he inherited from his father, the equally remarkable Alkan, and who spent the summer nearby in Bougival. Bizet was aware of her warm feelings for Delaborde, which she did not hide.1 The manner in which members of the Halévy family destroyed or concealed crucial evidence suggests that something was amiss. The appearance, however, is of a threesome who got on well enough. Delaborde, like Bizet, enjoyed swimming. He was a vigorous athlete, an advocate of the pedal-piano, an experienced traveller, and the possessor of innumerable apes and parrots as pets—congenial and interesting company, in other words. The most significant pointer to Geneviève’s interest in Delaborde is the marriage contract they both signed in August 1876, scarcely a year after Bizet’s death.2 The marriage did not take place; both parties eventually married other spouses. But this is a mat- ter in which gossip passed down through the years seems for once to have been right. Geneviève nevertheless told Gounod later that there was not a moment of her six years with Bizet she would not want to live again.3 We have at the same time to contend with the parallel gossip that linked Bizet to Galli-Marié.
