SECRETARY’S REPORT (2018-19) CLUB SERVICE Programs Strategic Planning & Succession Planning 48 Weekly Club Meetings & 12 Board Meetings were held this Rotary year as on 11th June 2019. The strategic planning & succession planning committees met regularly to ensure the good health of The 48 Weekly Club Meetings included 1 Installation Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar. A ‘Leadership Building Night, 1 GOV, 1 Anniversary Night, 1 condolence Program’ was conducted for the Club’s future leaders meeting, 27 guest speaker meetings, 10 monthly and 31 Rotarians participated. review meetings & 7 fellowship meetings. Membership Development & Extension Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar was well represented at all District Programs like ICGFs, District Assembly, 17 members were inducted this year against 3 District Training Sessions, etc. resignations during the year. One member passed away during the year. The membership strength of the Attendance, reception & protocol club, which was 127 as on 1st July 2018, is presently Maintenance of Club protocol as per the Board’s 140. guidelines and Bye Laws was diligently followed. Fellowship Arrangements for our weekly club meetings and fellowships were well taken care of. The attendance register was updated weekly with make-up attendance & e-attendance. List of chronic absentees was prepared and submitted to the Board for remedial action so as to maximize member’s involvement. Public Relation & Public Image Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar were the winners of the Inter Club Antakshari - ‘Funtakshari’ organized by Rotary Bangalore and the ’15 overs a side tennis ball Cricket Match’ with Rotary Bangalore Cantonment. Eleven fellowship events were organized during the year, namely ‘Quimbola’, ‘Felicitation of RBI’s Brave Hearts’, ‘Annual Picnic’, ‘Movie Show’, ‘Magic Show’, To improve public image, four Display Boards were ‘Christmas Social’, ‘Dakshin Bharatiya’, ‘Cricket Match’, installed at our Rotary House of Service and carry ‘Musical Tombola’, ‘Wine Tasting’ & ‘North meets information about a specific Rotary Bangalore South’. Finance The year has witnessed efficient collection of subscriptions and timely payments of RI Dues, District Dues & Dues to Rotary News. The statutory GST dues have also been remitted in time. The Club continued to be actively involved with the Government Girls High School in Hoskote. The school is doing exceedingly well. Many of the students have excelled in academics, sports & cultural activities thereby bringing laurels to the school. The Spirit of Rotary team visited 6 senior Rotarians & 1 past Rotarian and their Anns, at their homes, with prior Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar’s involvement with the intimation. It is also the capital of State of Karnataka. The name Bangalore is an anglicised version of the city's name in the Kannada language, Bengaluru. It is globally recognized as IT capital of India and also as a well developed industrial city. 1.1.2 Bangalore city was built in 1537 by Kempegowda. During the British Raj, Bangalore developed as a centre for colonial rule in South India. The establishment of the Bangalore Cantonment brought in large numbers of migrant Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and North Indian workers for developing and maintaining the infrastructure of the cantonment. New extensions were added to the old town by creating Chamarajpet, Seshadripuram, Nagasandra, Yediyur, Basavanagudi, Malleswaram, Kalasipalyam and Gandhinagar upto 1931. During the post independence period Kumara Park and Jayanagar came into existence. The cantonment area covers nearly dozen revenue villages, which included Binnamangala, Domlur, Neelasandra and Ulsoor to name a few. In 1960, at Binnamangala, new extension named Indiranagar was created. The defence establishments and residential complexes are in part of the core area. It is a radial pattern city growing in all directions. The Bangalore city which was 28.85 sq. Km. in 1901 increased to 174.7 sqkm in 1971 to 272 sqkm in 1986 and presently it has expanded to nearly 437 sqkm.

Vinod Kumar and Sheriff Vaseem Anjum Department of Architecture, BMSCE, Autonomous under VTU, Bangalore - 560 019, Karnataka, India; [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Bangalore, when founded by Kempegowda I, faced water scarcity, which was mitigated by the ruler by building reservoirs as tanks and lakes. With rapid urbanisation, the lakes have been encroached upon and have given way to build struc- tures catering to the citizen’s needs. According to study conducted by the Energy and Wetland Research Group, Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, the 262 wetlands that existed in Bangalore in 1962 has declined by 58% by 2007. Similarly, when the city’s built up area shot up by 466% between 1973 and 2007, the number of lakes came down from 159 to 93. Lakes also sustained over the years due to the active linkages between them, which are now part of the hardscape of the city. With the increase in built environment, the city is losing out on softscapes that help rejuvenate the water table through percolation. The storm water drains established by the erstwhile rulers of Bangalore are turning grey. One of the lakes in Bangalore which is rapidly losing out on its ability to cater to the biodiversity and turning grey is Ulsoor Lake.
