LIQUID FORCE KITE CONTROL SYSTEM DESIGN A Senior Project submitted to the Faculty of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Mechanical Engineering by Brendan Kerr, Alden Simmer, Brodie Sutherland March 2017 ABSTRACT Liquid Force Kite Control System Design Brendan Kerr, Alden Simmer, Brodie Sutherland Kiteboarding is an ocean sport wherein the participant, also known as a kiter, uses a large inflatable bow shaped kite to plane across the ocean on a surfboard or wakeboard. The rider is connected to his or her kite via a control bar system. This control system allows the kiter to steer the kite and add or remove power from the kite, in order to change direction and increase or decrease speed. This senior project focused on creating a new control bar system to replace a control bar system manufactured by a kiteboarding company, Liquid Force. The current Liquid Force control bar has two main faults, extraneous components and a lack of ergonomic design. Our team aimed to eliminate unneeded components and create a more ergonomic bar. By eliminating components, the bar would also be more cost effective to produce by using less material and requiring less time to manufacture. We first conducted a literature review into the areas of kiteboarding control systems and handle ergonomics. Based on studies done on optimal grip diameters for reducing forearm stress we concluded that the diameter for the bar grip should be at least a centimeter less than the maximum grip of the user. -

PHRF-NB Regulations 2020 1. Preface PHRF-NB strives to consistently provide fair ratings for dissimilar boats to race against each other. The best use of these ratings is done by grouping boats in the smallest rating band with like type boats. It is expected that all designs will have preferred conditions and may excel when those are met. The challenge we face is to balance the rating to the local predominate condition in an effort to have the best sailed and prepared boats finish in the top third. The Rating Committee (RC) reviews race results on a regular basis. This is typically done with at least a years’ worth of results for a boat type to determine whether ratings need to be adjusted. 2. Administration PHRF performance handicaps are boat performance handicaps based on the speed potential of the boat determined, as far as possible, by observations of race results, VPP data, and ratings from other Rating Systems. The intent of PHRF handicapping is that any well-equipped, well-maintained and well-sailed boat has a good chance to win; and any boat that wins a PHRF race is indeed well-equipped, well-maintained, and well- sailed. Handicaps are adjusted, as needed, on the basis of the boat's performance so that each boat will have an equal opportunity to win. This is the fundamental concept. PHRF-NB ratings are set by the RC. The RC reviews boat data, race results and boat modifications to name a few to determine a boats rating. We will initially set a boats ‘base handicap’ and then apply adjustments for modifications. -

Kitesurfing A - Z A Airfoil (aerofoil): a wing, kite, or sail used to generate lift or propulsion. Airtime: the amount of time spent in the air while jumping. AOA, Angle of Attack: also known as the angle of incidence (AOI) is the angle with which the kite flies in relation to the wind. Increasing AOA generally gives more lift. AOI, Angle of Incidence: angle which the kite takes compared to the wind direction Apparent wind, AW: The wind felt by the kite or rider as they pass through the air. For instance, if the true wind is blowing North at 10 knots and the kite is moving West at 10 knots, the apparent wind on the kite is NW at about 14 knots. The apparent wind direction shifts towards the direction of travel as speed increases. Aspect Ratio, AR: the ratio of a kites width to height (span to chord). Kites can range between a high aspect ratio of about 5.0 or a low aspect ratio of about 3.0. AR5: The legendary first 4 line inflatable kite manufactured by Naish. ARC: a foil kite manufactured by Peter Lynn B Back Loop: a kitesurfing trick where the kiter rotates backward (begins by turning their back toward the kite) while throwing his/her feet above the level of his/her head. Back Roll: same as a back loop but without getting their feet up high. Batten: a length of carbon or plastic which adds stiffness or shape to the kite or sail. 2018 OFFSHORE RACING RULE (ORR™) A Handicap Rating System for Offshore Boats Published by the Offshore Racing Association www.offshoreraceracingrule.org ORR OWNER’S QUICK START GUIDE* (*The Quick Start Guide is meant to be used as a help guide for owners and for informational purposes only: it is not to be considered part of the ORR Rule Book). Brief The Offshore Racing Rule (ORR) is owned and administered by the Offshore Racing Association (ORA). The ORA is the Rule Authority. The ORR predicts relative time allowances between boats to permit boats of different sizes, types and ages to compete with the fairest ratings possible. The ORR is an objective rule. Its ratings are based on the measurement of the speed-related features of sailboats and on the use of the ORR Velocity Prediction Program (VPP) that then calculates the speed potential of each boat at any combination of wind speed and course direction by assessing the measured data. The ORR VPP is a set of algorithms developed through the latest specific fundamental scientific research for its ongoing development. ORR is intended to be a non-type forming measurement rule that fairly rates properly designed and prepared boats which are equipped for offshore racing. It must be clearly understood by all who use the ORR that it is not a development rule and therefore is not intended for sailors who are looking to “beat” the rule. In order to discourage attempts to design boats “to the rule”, the algorithms of the VPP are non-public and only limited access is allowed for trial certificates. -

PHRF of Narragansett Bay Quick Reference to Asymmetrical SMG measurement Spinnaker Mid Girth (SMG) = mid girth length from midpoint of luff to midpoint of leech. Luff = the forward edge of fore-and-aft sail Leach = the after edge of a fore-and-aft sail J = the measurement from the bottom of your head stay to the front of the mast. JC= the additional length in front of the head stay away from the front of the mast that you attach you spinnaker tack to. I = the measurement from the top of the mast to the top of the deck. What is an Asymmetrical? A Spinnaker is an Asymmetrical when the leach and luff differ by more that 4% i.e ((leach- luff)/leach). Example: Johns spinnaker has a leach of 42 and a luff of 40 therefore the calculation wouold be 42-40=2/42=5%. For this measurement, pull the sail tight enough to pull the wrinkles out but not tight enough to stretch the sail. The measurements are supposed to be taken from the theoretical middle of the sail, but sometimes that’s impractical. Just give it your best, honest effort. Although it helps to have a large room to spread the sail out, this can be done in a wreck room, long hallway, or front yard. The process is easy to break up into manageable steps. Abstract: This paper describes an experimental set-up aiming to control and measure per- formances of small leading edge inflatable tube kites, with surface area of less than 35 m². This set-up can be deployed either onshore or on a dedicated boat. This article focuses on the onshore results. A 3D load cell is used to obtain the position of the kite under a straight- line assumption. A wind profiler (SODAR) is deployed to determine the wind speed and direction at the kite position. A specific post-processing of the data is presented, including phase averaging. The guideline of this work is to estimate the variation of the aerodynamic lift coefficient and lift to drag ratio along figure-of-eight trajectories. Results, for a chosen particular case, show a decrease of lift coefficient of about 20% of the maximum value dur- ing turning maneuvers of the kite.
