Yet the overwhelming majority of players spend most of their time accompanying. This short course will try to remedy this. Last year, 15 participants from 7 countries came to Edinburgh to take part in the 1st Cello Continuo Clinic. This year the course has been extended and developed. It will follow the ‘masterclass’ format but will include talks and demonstrations. We will work with ‘accompanees’ (including a violinist and a singer) on specific repertoire, from Corelli and Bach to Mozart, and accompany each other in cello sonatas, with the focus on the lower line. (Please bring a movement from an C18th Sonata.) You can also bring, by arrangement your own repertoire, your own ‘accompanee’, or pre-formed chamber groups. We will work on harmonic inflection using Bach Chorales and Mozart Menuets, then harmonic flow in simple Classical bass lines (how to influence ensembles armed with only a row of repeated notes!) as well as more complex Baroque bass lines. -

Attended the Royal College of Music where his teachers were Charles Stanford and William Rockstro. Started his musical career as a trombonist but spent the remainder of his life as a composer, teacher and administrator. He achieved great fame for his symphonic suite "The Planets." He composed in all genres and various styles and began his orchestral output with a Symphony in C minor in 1894. At the end of his life he started a Symphony of which only the Scherzo remains as well as an unfinished Second Choral Symphony. His other works for orchestra and band have been extensively recorded. Such anniversaries often give rise to reassessments of the status of composers or other creative artists. To judge by the number of new articles, books and recordings there has been no diminution in Elgar’s reputation since the Fiftieth anniversary in 1984. For Bayan Northcott, writing in The Independent on 1 January, this constant flow of material creates a problem of emphasis : "What, by now, do we not know about Elgar?... Granted, he was bom into a Victorian culture that placed an exceptional value on memory, on the souvenir, on storing up golden moments; granted his canny instinct for self-projection seems to have attracted a steady stream of friends with diaries and cameras ever at the ready. But as the memoirs, picture-books and editions of letters have tumbled from the press, they have at least been matched by earnest psychological studies of his contradictory character; by socio-economic investigations of his upwardly mobile urges and professional rivalries; by politico- cultural diagnoses of his career as bard of a dying imperialism. -

He studied there with Cyril Rootham and Charles Wood and then at the Royal College of Music with Vaughan Williams and R.O. Morris. He taught at Cambridge and composed mostly vocal music. "The Trees so High" is essentially a symphony with a vocal finale. He wrote a few short works for orchestra of which only "One Morning in Spring" has been published and recorded. After some informal musical training he began studying piano and composition when he was 25 years of age at the Royal Academy of Music with Harold Craxton and William Alwyn. He held teaching positions at Morley College in London and then at Duke University in North Carolina. He composed a vast amount of music in practically all genres. He wrote 4 numbered Symphonies: No. 1, Op. 3 (1948), No. 2, Op. 10 (1951), No. 3 in G major "Spring" (1981) and No. 4 in B major (1981). His orchestral catalogue also includes a Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Chamber Orchestra (1989), 2 Piano Concertos, 2 Violin Concertos, Clarinet Concerto and Symphonic Variations. -

Despite this he is arguably England's greatest composer some of whose orchestral music has traveled around the world more than any of his compatriots. In addition to the Symphonies, his Cello and Violin Concertos and Enigma Variations are his other orchestral masterpieces. His many other works for orchestra including the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, Falstaff and Cockaigne Overture have been recorded numerous times. DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>3 GREAT BRITAIN: ffss, 1954-81 Work for American record companies (notably Mercury and Everest) helped the LSO to raise its standards and convince Decca, by around 1962, that the finest symphony orchestra available (with the arguable exception of the VPO) could be regularly heard at the Royal Festival Hall, a few minutes walk away from 9, Albert Embankment, where the company had opened Decca House as its new headquarters in 1958. Then in 1964 the New Philharmonia, disowned by Walter Legge, began to record for Decca, as did the Academy of St.Martin in the Fields, having moved from L’Oiseau-Lyre to Argo. With the English Chamber Orchestra and RPO also available, London had a short spell of orchestral pre- eminence before Decca started shifting sessions to North America. It had also added Joan Sutherland’s sessions to its traditional operatic repertoire of Sullivan and Britten and maintained its importance in chamber music and instrumental recordings, particularly with Ashkenazy from 1963 and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble on Argo from 1968. In the early 1970s the advent of Anthony Rooley, the Consort of Musicke, Emma Kirkby, Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music brought a fresh look at repertoire from Dowland to Purcell, Handel, Mozart and eventually Beethoven. Solti recorded with the LPO from 1972 and the National Philharmonic was booked regularly from 1974-84. Also during the 1970s the London Sinfonietta’s surveys of Schönberg and Janá ček were recorded. Ashkenazy’s second career as a conductor centred initially on London, with the Philharmonia from 1977 and the RPO from 1987. -

ELGAR Enigma Variations In the South Coronation March Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra George Wurst Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934) Enigma Variations, Op. 36 Overture: In the South, Op. 50 Coronation March, Op. 65 Sir Edward Elgar enjoys a curious reputation in his own country. To many he is, above all, the composer of the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, the celebrator of Edwardian imperialism, the man who prefered the races to a rehearsal of his Violin Concerto with the young Yehudi Menuhin, who adds to the popular image by describing the composer as "a grandfatherly country gentleman who should properly have had a couple of hounds... at his heels." In fact Elgar deserves rather better than this, nearly qualifying for admission to the exclusive club that belongs to the greatest of the late romantic composers. He enjoyed the discerning esteem of his fellow-countrymen in his own time, and then, as now, was largely underestimated abroad, except in the United States of America. His oratorios have an interest that may now be unfashionable, although The Dream of Gerontius (Naxos 8.553885-6) retains a place in English choral repertoire, but the two symphonies, the concertos for violin and for cello and the Enigma Variations remain firmly entrenched in English concert programmes. Edward Elgar was born in the West of England, near Worcester, in 1857. His father was a piano-tuner, organist, violinist and shopkeeper, from whom Elgar acquired much of his musical training. The boy at first made his living as a freelance musician, teaching, playing the violin and organ, and conducting local orchestras and choirs.
