Computers in Railways XI 243 Towards interoperability on Northwest European railway corridors: signalling on the high-speed railway Amsterdam–Antwerp J. H. Baggen, J. M. Vleugel & J. A. A. M. Stoop Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands Abstract The high-speed railway Amsterdam (The Netherlands)–Antwerp (Belgium) is nearly completed. As part of a TEN-T priority project it will connect to major metropolitan areas in Northwest Europe. In many (European) countries, high-speed railways have been built. So, at first sight, the development of this particular high-speed railway should be relatively straightforward. But the situation seems to be more complicated. To run international services full interoperability is required. However, there turned out to be compatibility problems that are mainly caused by the way decision making has taken place, in particular with respect to the choice and implementation of ERTMS, the new European railway signalling system. In this paper major technical and institutional choices, as well as the choice of system borders that have all been made by decision makers involved in the development of the high-speed railway Amsterdam–Antwerp, will be analyzed. This will make it possible to draw some lessons that might be used for future railway projects in Europe and other parts of the world. Launch of the Calais to Turin Orbassano Rail Motorway: Good News for the Environment
PRESS RELEASE LAUNCH OF THE CALAIS TO TURIN ORBASSANO RAIL MOTORWAY: GOOD NEWS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT CALAIS, 6 NOVEMBER 2018 On 6 November 2018, officials inaugurated the new rail motorway linking the Port of Calais in northern France with Orbassano in the suburbs of Turin (Italy). Ultimately the link will transfer 31,000 lorries off the roads and on to rail. Present at the ceremony were Élisabeth Borne, the French Minister reporting to the Ministre d’Etat, Minister for the Ecological and Solidarity-Based Transition, with responsibility for Transport; Natacha Bouchart, mayor of Calais; Jean-Marc Puissesseau, Chairman and CEO of Port Boulogne Calais; Guillaume Pepy, Chairman of the Executive Board, SNCF; and Thierry Le Guillaux, Chairman of VIIA, operator of SNCF Group rail motorways. The line is operated from existing terminals at the Port of Calais and Orbassano, making use of rail companies Fret SNCF on the French side and Mercitalia (the Italian state rail company Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane), on the Italian side. It will connect to ferry services at Calais and the United Kingdom, allowing semi-trailers to be transported unaccompanied across France to Italy. MORE THAN 30,000 LORRIES TRANSFERRED TO RAIL The new service will provide three weekly round trips connecting Calais to Orbassano, a distance of 1,150 km, in 18 hours. When fully operational, the new rail motorway will run two round trips a day. Thierry Le Guilloux, Chairman of VIIA said: “This new rail motorway line between Calais and Turin Orbassano is an addition to our existing Spain service. It results from work conducted by teams at VIIA as well as the Port of Calais and Fret SNCF—and it is excellent news for the development of unaccompanied semi-trailer transport in Europe.” The service, open to all types of trailers, could save some 1.2 tonnes of CO2 per trailer per trip, for a total saving of 37,200 tonnes of CO2 full year. -

MINISTERIO DE TRANSPORTES, MOVILIDAD Y AGENDA URBANA Inauguración de la exposición conmemorativa del décimo aniversario del AVE Madrid-València Ábalos asegura que la llegada del AVE a València fue un hito que transformó la ciudad Ábalos ha destacado que la puesta en servicio del AVE hizo que se ahorrase tiempo y dinero y que se ganase en cohesión social y territorial. En estos diez años la alta velocidad entre València y Madrid ha evitado la emisión a la atmósfera de un millón cuatrocientas mil toneladas de CO2. Ábalos ha recordado que el ferrocarril representa el 42% de la Nota de prensa Nota inversión total de su Departamento: 5.876 millones de euros, 1.567 millones más que en 2020. El ministro de Transportes, Movilidad y Agenda Urbana, José Luis Ábalos ha asegurado hoy que la puesta en servicio de la línea Madrid-València hace 10 años fue un hito que transformó la ciudad derribando barreras y acercando el intercambio social, económico y cultural entre dos grandes polos de referencia, Madrid y València. En su intervención posterior a la visita a la exposición que conmemora el décimo aniversario de la puesta en servicio de la línea de Alta Velocidad Madrid-València, el ministro ha afirmado que este hito se logró con 391 kilómetros de vía (438 kilómetros si se incluye la conexión a Albacete) y con una inversión de 6.600 millones de euros, de los que cerca de 2.000 millones correspondieron a ayudas de la Unión Europea. Ábalos ha querido recordar algunos datos referentes a aquella puesta en servicio: En sus 100 primeros días el AVE Madrid-València superó el medio millón de viajeros. -
