SUPER DUPLEX STAINLESS STEEL Applications Acoustic modems are extremely useful and utilized in every area of underwater industry. The ability to communicate and retrieve information from underwater assets is invaluable. Traditionally cables were the standard method of providing this utility. Cables however are costly to install and maintain. Cables degrade over time in the harsh environment causing reliability issues resulting in high maintenance costs. Acoustic modems provide a cost effective and convenient method of information transfer between the surface and the sub sea asset. The cost of deploying and maintaining a wireless communication link is a tiny fraction as compared with using cables. In some cases, installing cables is not at all practical. For example, communication with mobile objects such as AUVs or divers. DSPComm has supplied modems to many commercial OEMs and government organizations around the world for over twenty years. Following are some areas the Aquacomm modems are utilized: Oil and Gas Industry Many of your offshore projects require reliable underwater communications, where failure in the communications system can lead to costly maintenance, delays, production downtime, or environmental disaster. DSPComm can help you reduce project execution risks and increase operational efficiency in your offshore projects. Our reliable and versatile AquaComms modems dramatically improve your underwater communication systems by: • Replacing your cabled system with a wireless system that offers high communications reliability, vastly increased flexibility by removing the cable, and significantly reduced deployment and maintenance time. • Providing crucial redundancy to your cabled systems. • Vastly expanding the scope of your control and monitoring activities underwater through applications not possible with cabled systems. Subsea Oil and Gas Applications • Subsea production riser monitoring • Pipeline monitoring systems • Wireless interrogation of subsea data pods using ROV’s • Drill string monitoring • Well head monitoring and control. • Control and monitoring of assets during installation of infrastructure. Defence Defence has been a pioneer in the use of underwater communications systems. Such systems have been used in applications that range from submarine communications to diver communications and remote underwater monitoring, command and control. In these applications, reliable and covert communication is a basic necessity. Unreliable or unsecured systems introduce unacceptable risks and can lead to loss of assets and lives. DSPComm thrives on fulfilling this fundamental requirement. We have chosen defence as one of the strategic markets to demonstrate our modems’ highly reliable and secure communications in harsh underwater conditions. Our modems are now being deployed by navies worldwide. Some of the underwater wireless communications applications for the defence industry are: • Submarine communications systems including AUV communications. • Mine lift bags, which are used to retrieve mines from sensitive areas and dispose them in safer areas. • Diver communications systems that are used by special forces, e.g. for mine clearance • Communication systems and underwater networks to various underwater instrument packages such as listening devices. • Wide area networks that interface to radio-based systems at the surface, such as network-centric warfare systems. Oceanographic Instrumentation Your industry probably has the most experienced users of underwater communication systems, both cabled and wireless. Wireless systems have indisputable cost and deployment flexibility advantages over cabled systems. However you’d probably have found that the experience to date with wireless communication systems has been less than satisfactory as your industry has been dogged with unreliable acoustic modem technologies. Lack of reliability is disruptive because the cost impact of such failures comes not only from the high cost of your instrumentation package but also the steep labour and logistics costs related to deploying a new package and the expensive delays to operations. You also have important requirements related to integration, which would have been a major source of aggravation as conventional modems are heavy and bulky and have high power consumption. Conventional modems are also painful to integrate, often requiring lengthy and labour intensive customisation. These issues frustrate your ability to speed up your time to deployment and reduce integration costs. We understand your key criteria of reliability, versatility, and ease of integration when it comes to selecting underwater modems. Our Aqua Comm product range is specifically designed to deliver on the key requirement of reliability while providing deployment versatility due to our modem’s light weight, low power consumption, and small size. Our OEM module’s “plug & play” interface makes it easy to be integrated with your products Oceanography applications • Reticulation of data from subsea pod (example current meter) to surface buoy • Periodic monitoring of sus sea pod • Realtime data networks • Acoustic releases to recover pods. Aquaculture and fishing Your business requires monitoring of numerous parameters of the water body to check the health of the farmed live stock. Monitoring the environment and controlling the parameters are critical–if the conditions are not correctly controlled, there can be high mortality of the stock and disastrous consequences to your operation itself. Aquaculture Applications • Monitoring system for fish pens • Ropeless fishing systems to protect large Mammalia. • Trawler monitoring and control systems. Environmental Monitoring DSPComm provides highly reliable and versatile modems that enable you to improve the cost effectiveness and efficiency of your monitoring operations. Through DSPComm’s wireless underwater modems, you can: Environmental Applications • Replace your cabled system with a wireless system that provides greater flexibility in choosing the monitoring position, as well as being a fraction of the cost to install and maintain. • Enhance your monitoring packages that can only log data with a wireless system that can deliver real-time data to the surface. • Set up underwater networks to between instrument packages over large areas. • Communicate reliably to mobile nodes such as AUVs that are used to traverse environments such as coral reefs. In addition to reliability of communications, our modems are also extremely versatile in terms of low-power consumption, light weight, and small size, ensuring they can be easily integrated into your equipment Diving Diving is an industry increasing in popularity, though it is well known it is a hazardous activity, as there are many things that can go wrong. In spite of the inherent risks underwater, communications between divers and between divers and the surface are non-existent or primitive. With a reliable wireless communications system such as Aqua Comm, it is possible to have a communications system for divers so that diving is made safer. This means the surface can keep track of the diver and send messages to other divers or send assistance should a diver get into trouble. AquaComm could revolutionise the diving industry making it safer and more accessible to a wider audience. The industry also benefits from lower insurance and operational costs. Some of the applications that AquaComm can be used for in diving are: Diving Applications • Communications with the surface and other divers • Diver being able to send distress calls • Diver recall and assistance provision • Real-time instructions and data to divers carrying out complex underwater tasks such as on subsea oil rigs • Diver tracking and sending position information to divers OTHER APPLICATIONS • Collection of real-time oceanographic data • AUV AND UUV Command and Control • Subsea Pipeline Monitoring • Subsea Wireless Telemetry and Control • Submersible Retrieval Buoys • River and Sea Seepage Monitoring • Diver Location and Positioning • Underwater asset Monitoring and Location Based services • Wireless Underwater Lift Bags • Sample Client Samples .
