The routes from the old Kingdom of Asturias were the first to take the pilgrims to Santiago. The coastal route was as busy as the other, older pilgrims’ ways long before the Spanish monarchs proclaimed the French Way to be the ideal route, and provided a link for the Christian kingdoms in the North of the Iberian Peninsula. This endorsement of the French Way did not, however, bring about the decline of the Asturian and Galician pilgrimage routes, as the stretch of the route from León to Oviedo enjoyed even greater popularity from the late 11th century onwards. The Northern Route is not a local coastal road for the sole use of the Asturians living along the Alfonso II the Chaste. shoreline. This medieval route gave rise to an Liber Testamenctorum (s.     UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT SUMMER 2017 (May 23 - June 1) Hiking Through History: An Educational Journey on the Camino de Santiago McKew Devitt, Senior Lecturer Romance Languages The Camino de Santiago is truly an amazing cultural experience. The ‘Way of St. James’ is a pilgrimage route that transverses the northern part of Spain, starting at two points at the border with France and ending in the city of Santiago de Compostela in the province of Galicia. The trail offers a plethora of historical, religious, and cultural contexts to teach students about Spain and also its relation to Europe. From its origins during the times of the reconquista to its current status as UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Camino provides a unique opportunity for students who are interested in seeing Spain while following in the footsteps of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who came before them. I have hiked the Camino several times and know first-hand the benefits it would offer students participating in a travel study course. We will start in the city of León and finish in Santiago de Compostela 12 days later, having covered 281 kilometers, or 175 miles. We will also be spending a full day in Madrid and have time to see the Prado museum and some of the other sites the capital has to offer. The intention for this course is to develop a travel study opportunity that would offer a once in a lifetime experience, an opportunity to see Spain from the unique perspective of the Camino. This course presents a challenge for anyone, no matter how physically fit they may be, and this should be a serious consideration before signing up for it.

Durante los largos años de migración en tierras catalanas, no perdió nunca su identidad gallega. Esto quedó reflejado en su producción literaria que incluye poesía, prosa y traducción. La aportación de este intelectual lugués en relación a los gallegos y las gallegas en la diáspora catalana fue fundamental durante los años de la transición.

    El Camino Triacastela - Sarria Pilgrims have two options today, signposted at the trail’s departure from Triacastela. The shorter one proceeds from the detour to the right, crosses the valley of San Xil, and passes through traditional villages such as A Balsa, Montán, Calvor and San Mamede do Camiño. There some steep stretches during this walk. The other alternative on the leftward fork is a bit longer. It heads towards Samos, site of a renowned monastery erected in the 6th century, and one of the most important of its kind in Galicia. It is both a pilgrim hostel and a tourist site with grounds open to the general public Monday to Saturday from 10 to 12:30 and 16:30 to 18:30. Sunday and holiday hours are 12:45 to 13:30 and 16:30 to 18:30. You can enjoy the monastery’s beautiful, spacious cloisters, its library, medieval pharmacy, and vestry. This place is also full of stories and curiosities. One of the cloisters has a fountain with four mermaids showing their breasts, which was the cause for much uproar. There is also a thornless bramble, said to be the one that hid its thorns when Saint Benedict fell over it to avoid prickling him. The vaults also feature a key on the ceiling with an inscription reading: “What are you looking at, fool”. Some people claim that in the murals decorating the large cloister they see faces of celebrities, such as Sofia Loren in the body of a nun or Sara Montiel (a Spanish actress) as an angel, perhaps because the painter, from Coruña, also did billboards.
