DYFED INVERTEBRATE GROUP NEWSLETTER N°. 1 (March 1986) This first issue of the DIG Newsletter heralds what we hope will be a new phase in the conservation of invertebrates in west Wales. We are all aware of how beautiful and varied Dyfed's countryside is and many of the richer sites have already been purchased by sympathetic bodies such as the West Wales Trust for Nature Conservation, Nature Conservancy Council, National Trust and Woodland Trust. These reserves, by and large, have been chosen as representative of the spectrum of natural and semi-natural habitats in the county - with an eye often kept open for scarce plants and birds. These priorities will no doubt remain but as public interest in, and hence knowledge of, invertebrates improves the requirements of a whole range of groups must be taken into account. Apart from broad generalisations of sound practice it has been difficult for conservation bodies to cater for invertebrates as, until recently, so little has been known about them in Dyfed. It is our hope that DIG will provide a voice for those thousands of unsung species and present the information and advice upon which management plans can be formulated. The primary need is to collate data on the distribution and status of our invertebrate fauna in order that conservation priorities can be assessed. This is the main function of the Newsletter, to bring together the results of the efforts and expertise of naturalists surveying invertebrates in Dyfed. The Newsletter will appear as often as we can fill the pages - it is dependent upon the support of your contributions.

A Warriors side rather depleted the day after a hard match and heavy night, still played a full part in this entertaining game that helped Llanishen end their time at USK road before moving on to a purpose built 3G pitch next season. With 6 last minute withdrawals the Warriors had to reshuffle. Gwilym moving to scrum half at such moments has become standard but also moving out of the pack were Nathan Lawson at 13 and Jordan Jones at 14. Llanishen fielded a combined XV of 1sts and 2nds and set abut enjoying themselves. Cross kicks and ambitious passes were the order of the day but stout defence and some lapses frustrated them for most of the game. The Warriors dominated at times and the pack worked hard in rumbling forwards with Jenkins, Mark Lewis, Dai Haines and Richard Evans all going strong and man of the match Tomos Hall hitting ruck after ruck. Llanishen never looked like losing and crossed for 5 fine tries as they showed off their full range of skills. The Warriors got on the board in the 1st half when the elusive Andrew Davies wriggled through. The 2nd half was closer with Ben Winstanley turning through a pile of bodies and right at the death Davies followed up a scrum half break to bag his 2nd try.

P-03-263 List Stradey Park Petition wording We call upon the National Assembly for Wales to urge the Minister for Heritage to grant listed status to Stradey Park, in order to protect the heritage of this world famous rugby ground and cultural icon for the people of Wales. Supporting information: The petition to list Stradey Park was inspired by calls that “something should be done” to protect the heritage at this world famous location. It is significant that these calls have continued after the Scarlets have moved across Llanelli to their new stadium. Stradey Park is clearly more than just a place where rugby was watched - it is part of local culture and national heritage. A cultural icon can be defined as anything that is readily recognised, and generally represents an object or concept with great cultural significance to a wide cultural group. It may come to be regarded as having a special status as particularly representative of a particular group of people or a period in history. Stradey Park is synonymous with the support of a Welsh community for its rugby club in the 20th century it is undoubtedly a cultural icon. Stradey Park has gained worldwide fame, not only for the exploits of the players who took to the famous turf, but also for the fervent support supplied by those who crammed into the stands and terraces surrounding it during the matches, and at half-time and full-time onto the pitch itself. That support became world renown as typically Welsh, an image strengthened by songs celebrating famous victories at Stradey, such as the - the1972 victory over the All Blacks the last by any club side in the world.

Foreword Foreword As Executive Board Member for Regeneration and Leisure, I am pleased to present the Carmarthenshire County Council Local Development Plan (LDP) as adopted by the County Council on December 10 2014. Whilst taking account of national plans, policies and programmes, the Carmarthenshire LDP provides a locally distinctive means of shaping the future use of land within our County. As such, the Plan takes account of our County’s unique characteristics and qualities and it gives me pleasure to see the emphasis placed on sustainable development as a central principle. I am also pleased to note the close working relationship that the Plan demonstrates with the Integrated Community Strategy. In noting that the LDP is one of only two plans that the Authority is statutorily obliged to produce, I consider that this Plan provides a robust mechanism for delivering the Council’s ambitions over the coming years. I particularly welcome the Plan’s recognition of the importance of promoting a sustainable distribution of growth and regeneration within the context of approaches in regional working. The LDP considers a wide range of issues and presents a vision for the future of the County. The Plan’s Strategy will help realise this vision by identifying the level and distribution of growth and development needed in accordance with the diverse character of the County’s communities. The Plan will deliver its Strategy via the implementation of a range of policies and land use allocations, including provision for new homes and employment over the plan period. I also note that the Sustainability Appraisal (SA) and Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) have both provided important roles within the Plan making process and that all regulatory requirements have been adhered to.

Rugby World travelled to west how they like to describe it, as ‘able-bodied’ players play alongside PASSION the disabled. Very rarely do you fi nd that kind of interaction in any Wales to see the team in action and Ssport, and it is especially laudable in such a full-contact sport like rugby, given that FOR THE GAME discover what makes them so special most people’s instinct is to wrap those with learning disabilities in cotton wool. RUGBY WORLD JANUARY 2005 73 JAMES FORESTER Family practice: Meredith Pugh is following the footsteps of his rugby-playing brother, father and grandfather And it might surprise you to learn that the Warriors (or Rhyfelwyr to give them their Welsh moniker) are in their tenth season – and some season it promises to be, with a series of fund-raising events culminating in a two-week tour to New Zealand to watch the British & Irish Lions and to play three matches against local sides. So where did this extraordinary journey begin? Well, in 1994 the only other similar side, Swansea Gladiators, challenged Heol Goffa Social Activity Centre – a day centre in Llanelli for adults with learning difficulties – to a match.
