Dear Friends, It is my dearest hope that 2019 will be a good year for you, your loved ones and our churches. Sadly, just before Christmas St Ismael’s Church was attacked and the lead taken from the roof, causing a great deal of damage. Despite this, the Christmas services went ahead as usual. I was particularly pleased at the attendance at St. Mary’s Christingle service and I am looking forward to our “Messy Church” starting up again.

I recently came across the story of “Solomon’s Bee” which I would like to share with you. According to Jewish tradition, when the Queen of Sheba made her royal visit to King Solomon at his palace in Jerusalem, she decided that she would test Solomon to see how wise he really was. The Queen of Sheba had her servants set out two flower arrangements. One was of real flowers and the other was of finely crafted artificial flowers and she challenged King Solomon to tell the genuine from the fake without going close to them. Tradition says that King Solomon responded by opening a window and before long a bee flew in. The bee, of course, went straight to the real flowers for the nectar and in this way King Solomon knew which the real flowers were.

The year 2018 has been a period when it has been very difficult to discern what is ‘real’, or true from what is false, right from wrong. In many ways our old certainties have gone and it can seem as though the only thing we can be sure of is the growing uncertainty of this time. In the Western world, the foundations that were built on the Bible and Judaeo-Christian values are all too quickly disappearing under pressure from commercialism and secular humanism. In other parts of the world, there is a rise in new ideologies based on religious or nationalist totalitarianism. With the changes in the world order, it is difficult to know friend from foe. All these situations are putting the Church under increasing pressure. Countries that once prided themselves on their religious liberty and human rights record may still make an outward show of openness, but in reality things are often quite different. Saudi Arabia is a country where it is so dangerous to leave Islam and to follow Christ, that Saudi Christians must keep their faith entirely secret in fear of being executed. There are over a million Christians in Iran who worship regularly, some have been imprisoned and one has been executed. Iran is openly condemned by the Western nations, but why not Saudi Arabia also?

Christians today can find themselves bewildered by what they see happening in world politics. God’s Church is growing in places of persecution like Iran, India and China. Yet where we live in comparative freedom, our churches are fading away. Many Christians in our Western culture live out good respectable lives unaware that there is a problem, some want to get out now while they can and others want to make a stand and try to turn the tide, but how?

In the Old Testament we read of the men of Issachar who understood what believers should do (1 Chronicles 12:32). The Church has a great need for such men and women today. We need people who can understand our times and are open to God’s plan for them, His people and the world.

Jesus said “I am …the truth “(John 14.6). The Greek word for truth is aletheia: this is the opposite of pretence or sham. So better than any honey bee, we have Christ, the wisdom of God (Corinthians 1:24) who can truly guide us into His divine pathways.

So, this year I am asking that you join with me in reviewing your prayer life. Let us be a people of prayer, let us give time and effort to discerning God’s plan for us, our Church, our community, all our Christian brothers and sisters the world over. We must also have the courage to act with discernment and be guided by Our Lord’s Holy will. Then we shall know how we should live, how we should serve Him, how we should care for each other and our world. Amen. Your Priest-in-Charge Trevor

A group of friends from our churches had the privilege of celebrating the Epiphany this year in London in the company of Rev.Helen Harknett (Evans). Helen is a Curate at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Clapham but, is currently on placement at the Church of St John the Divine, Kennington, where under the guidance of Canon Mark Williams, she has become a valued and much loved and appreciated member of the team. Canon Mark hails from South and is a Welsh speaker and a gifted musician. Diolch Mark am y croeso mawr i'r Ficerdy ac am yr adloniant gawsom. Both services were truly inspirational, and it was a joy to be a part of such a large congregation who gave us such a warm welcome. Friends of St. Mary

The committee meeting due for the 5th November 2018 was deferred owing to insufficient attendance for a quorum. It was rearranged and our first meeting of the new year is now on Monday 4th February 2019 at 7.00pm in the Parish Room to have relevant updates and to discuss further fundraising events.

The Friends committee has been unreservedly overwhelmed by the monetary contribution from the family of the late Mr. Derek Dalton, who requested that donations in lieu of flowers in his memory would be presented to the Friends of St. Mary. The chairman, Mr. Ieuan Hughes, extends his gratitude to the family and to everyone who has generously submitted to the request, resulting in the Friends receiving the sum of £938-50p. This amount reflects the affection for, and the high regard in which Derek was held within the community which he served so diligently. The money will go towards the cost of rebuilding the kitchen annexe of the Parish Room. Our thanks also to Autumn Leaf Funeral Directors for co- ordinating the donations. Memories of Derek will be held with great affection by so many. “Rest in Peace”.

Our meeting will be on Wednesday February 13th at 7.00pm in the Parish Room. It will be the AGM and subs of £19 will be collected. In addition, we are asking members for £5 each for the Overseas Fund.

Our Wave of Prayer will be on Monday 25th February between 11.40am- 12.05pm. Our link Dioceses are: Wau in South Sudan, Kigeme in Rwanda, Bauchi in Nigeria and Mandalay in Myanmar.

Lynne will be coordinating the Baby Bundle Appeal again, so please speak to her for details.

A warm welcome is extended to anyone who would like to join our branch and we send our good wishes to Heather Witt who has taken over as President this year from Glenys. Heather and Bryan will be moving to Kidwelly when Bryan retires later this year.

We remember in our prayers all our indoor members and members who are now housebound or in residential care.

Messy Church and Sunday School.

We were delighted to have over 20 children at the Christingle and Nativity - so many, that we almost ran out of costumes – everyone joined in wonderfully.

Don’t forget that we have Sunday School at 9.30 every Sunday in the Parish Room, with stories, teaching, prayers, crafts and FUN.

By the time you read this we will have had our first Messy church of 2019 - news and pictures next month. The next Messy Church is on Sunday, 24th February, 3-5.30pm in Trinity Methodist Church. Kidwelly Senior Citizens

It seems a long time ago now, but our speaker for the December meeting was our very own Joan Osborne. She gave a talk on Shoe Boxes, how it started in Kidwelly and how she ended up being the one to co-ordinate it all.

The boxes are delivered to Moldova, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Romania. This year, 168 boxes were made up from completed boxes and individual items kindly donated, supplemented by Joan. Altogether 271 went from Kidwelly. Joan also brought scrap books that showed photos of the people who received the boxes and the ram shackle sheds they call home.

It made it abundantly clear why there is a need for these boxes and, by comparison, how rich we really are. We thank Joan for her hard work and for all those who donate.

We also held our Christmas ‘Do’ at the Red Lion, Llandyfaelog, where we enjoyed the food, had the help of Father Christmas (James) to give out the raffle prizes and were entertained by the singing of Ali Gwilliam. A lovely evening.

Our first meeting of 2019 will be on Wednesday 6th February, 2pm at the Rugby Club.

My Prayer for You

May the father of life pour out His grace on you; May you feel his hand in everything you do And be strengthened by the things He brings you through: This is my prayer for you May the Son of God be Lord in all your ways; May He shepherd you the length of all your days, And in your heart may He receive the praise: This is my prayer for you. And despite how simple it may sound, I pray that His grace will abound and motivate everything you do; and may the fullness of His love be shared through you. May His Spirit comfort you, and make you strong, May He discipline you gently when you’re wrong, And in your heart may he give you a song; This is my prayer for you. May Jesus be Lord in all your ways, May He shepherd you the length of all your days, And in your heart may He receive the praise: This is my prayer for you.

Ty-Golau update

Not much to report this month as we have been on a long Christmas break in December. Last session at M-Y-G was on Wed. 9th Dec. when we had our Christmas buffet. This was free of charge as a ‘Thank you’ to all our lovely service users and carers who attend regularly on a weekly basis throughout the year. The morning included carol singing, a Christmas quiz and comic sketch which was performed by our volunteers. Each service user and carer had a small gift to take away with them.

We were delighted to receive an unexpected visit from Powys Police who presented us with an award which read, ‘In Recognition and Appreciation for the work Ty-Golau does for the local community’.

2018 has been a year of tremendous growth for Ty-Golau and we are looking forward to all that 2019 has to offer. There are exciting plans to expand into other areas of Carmarthenshire in this coming year. We thank God for the growth we have seen and look to Him for all that is to come.

Over 50's Club annual Christmas Dinner was held at Bwyd y Cwm, Pontyates with members being treated to a delicious three course meal. Eileen and Pearl had organized a fantastic raffle and to end the evening, there was entertainment from the resident singer. Everyone had a thoroughly wonderful evening. The first meeting of the new year will be on Wednesday, 6th February, 2.30pm at the Neuadd, when members will learn some exciting news. New members will be given a warm welcome. All good wishes are conveyed to the Chairperson, Mrs Jean Fox, as she recovers from a hip operation. February's tea hosts will be Christine Hughes and Maureen Evans. Come along to one of the meetings and enjoy good company.

Eglwys Sant Teilo's Gymynfa Ganu Carolau was a most enjoyable evening with wonderful singing under the leadership of Ioan Hefin. ‘Only Mynydd Aloud’ sang a variety of Christmas songs and a reading was offered. Organist of the evening was Jean Peace and Geraint Rees accompanied the choir. A sincere thanks to both, and of course to Ioan who conducted in his own casual but professional style. And a big thank you to the ladies of Sant Teilo for providing the mulled wine and the delicious homemade mince pies and cakes, which were most appreciated by all present.

Neuadd Mynyddygarreg's Quiz was once again a thoroughly enjoyable event with a good number of tables taking part. Winners were Kid-Deilo who very kindly donated their winnings back to the Neuadd, a very generous gesture. Many thanks go to Peggy Davies for organizing the event and to the superb Quiz Master, Cousin Joan, for a highly entertaining evening. Diolch yn fawr Peggy a Joan unwaith eto am eich cefnogaeth.

A welcome sight this year for the first time was a Christmas Tree erected in the Children's Park. Cydweli Town Council have now pledged a tree annually for the village and hopefully, some street decorations in time to come. Villagers gathered to see the switch-on and then proceeded to the Neuadd to join in the Carol singing.

Ysgol Mynyddygarreg's Christmas Concert this year was "The Lion King" and the children gave a very polished performance to a large and appreciative audience. The Foundation Phase topic last term was "Africa", and here they studied the diary of Kabo and his family in Botswana. The children compared houses and animals in both countries and learnt to keep their own diaries. They also turned their attention to Christmas, designing, building and wrapping gifts and enjoying Santa's grotto. Key Stage 2 also took "Africa" as their theme, preparing an oral presentation on Morocco, Tanzania etc., studying language, jobs, food, weather, buildings and in preparation for the Christmas show "Lion King", animals and dancing. Towards the end of term, the focus turned to Christmas and letters to Santa and remembering those less fortunate. The Christmas card this year was a drawing of a glimpse through a window. The whole school took part in this year's Christmas show "The Lion King", which was a wonderful production. Well done everyone for their hard work, it was a great show. P.C. Ali visited the school teaching the importance of keeping safe and on-line bullying. Congratulations to Year 6 for a great performance at the unveiling of the Band's notice board in the village. Children in Need day raised £70 with staff and pupils dressed in pyjamas. Year 1 took part in an athletics session at Llanelli Leisure Centre, organized by Actif Sports and Leisure. Years 5/6 were invited to perform and to have a stall selling goods at Ffair Nadolig y Strade, when the pupils produced various crafts to sell. Pupils had a wonderful time watching the panto "Puss in Boots" by the company 'Image Musical Theatre' at Trimsaran school. Cor Trim y Mynydd visited Asda to sing carols, giving a fine performance. They thanked Asda for the invitation and warm welcome. Many pupils competed at Eisteddfod Llandyfaelog, with good results. The school won the cup for the local school with the highest marks. History of Llandyfaelog. We have had the ‘Story of Llandyfaelog’ reprinted. This is the excellent booklet written in 1953 by Ethel Davies, then Headmistress of Idole School. It traces the history of Llandyfaelog, Idole, Croesyceiliog and Cwmffrwd back to Roman times. For sale at £5.00 in the Red Lion or through Edwin Atkinson at Gellideg Tel: 01267 267 751 or 07867513409 or [email protected] All profits to St Maelog’s Church.

Biographies of the Fallen from Llandyfaelog. A memorial book is being put together to record all those from Llandyfaelog who fell in the Two World Wars and subsequent conflicts. The West Wales War Memorial Project has provided much of the detail of their military service, but we need to link this to their family origins and where they lived in the parish. Anyone who can assist is asked to contact Edwin Atkinson on 01267 267 751 or 07867513401 or [email protected]
