The launch of our Blue Stream service was fast and furious, as the company entered head-frst into a 100% specialised reefer container service. Let us take you on a tour with the StreamLines’ team through Central America, introduce you to the Blue Stream agent in Honduras, visit a new terminal in Aruba, explore Africa’s booming future and celebrate our designation as Friend of the Sea. The earthquake caused havoc and devastation all over the country, but worst hit the province of Manabi. The tremor lasted for about 55 long seconds, which is quite long when one is in fear of what will come next while buildings are coming down left, right, and centre. Over 700 persons lost their lives, while two months on there are still some recovering from their injuries and some are even still missing. Thousands of families lost their homes and their place of work. Apart from the loss of life and the physical injuries, this natural disaster hit in a relatively humble area where society works so hard to keep up with the advances of now-a-days developing Ecuador. Humble hard working people, who with little income managed to proudly build their brick wall houses, some even with a second foor, lost everything in 55 devastating seconds. Much can be written about the event, but pictures say more than words. At this stage, apart from continuing with frequent supply of consumer goods, we believe that we can best support Manabi with constructive and lasting help. Seatrade Ecuador is preparing an aid project for Manabi, details of which will be circulated soon in order to give those interested in our network the opportunity to support our relief efforts. What this terrible natural disaster demonstrated is that the worst thinkable circumstances generate heart-warming solidarity, support and care from all over the world and that even the most hurt people get back on their feet and fnd the energy and motivation to reconstruct what was damaged for a better future.   • Cold Ironing Report
    PRELIMINARY DRAFT—DO NOT CITE OR QUOTE I. INTRODUCTION This report presents an analysis of the feasibility and cost effectiveness of cold-ironing ocean-going vessels while docked at California ports. Cold-ironing refers to shutting down auxiliary engines on ships while in port and connecting to electrical power supplied at the dock, thus eliminating virtually all emissions from a ship while it is in port. (Cold-ironing is also referred to as “shore power” and alternative maritime power). The term “cold-ironing” comes from the act of dry-docking a vessel, which involves shutting down all on-board combustion, resulting in the vessel going “cold.” Without cold-ironing, auxiliary engines run continuously while a ship is docked, or “hotelled,” at a berth to power lighting, ventilation, pumps, communication, and other onboard equipment. Ships can hotel for several hours or several days. Hotelling emissions from ship auxiliary engines are significant contributors to particulate matter from diesel-fueled engines (diesel PM), California’s most significant toxic air contaminant. Diesel PM emissions are estimated to be responsible for about 70 percent of the total ambient air toxics risk in California. Communities adjacent to the ports are exposed to elevated cancer risk and other health impacts from these hotelling emissions. As indicated in a recent Air Resources Board (ARB or Board) risk analysis conducted for the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, “Diesel Particulate Matter Exposure Assessment Study for the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach,” 20 percent of total diesel PM emissions at these ports comes from hotelling emissions. Other sources of diesel PM include emissions from ship transit and maneuvering, cargo-handling equipment, and rail and truck operations.

Lauritzen In 1884, the consul Ditlev Lauritzen (1859-1935) moved from his hometown Ribe in Western Denmark to Esbjerg to start the company J. Lauritzen1. The company was named after Ditlev’s father since Ditlev was under 25 years old and not of age to start a business. He started an import business with wood, coal and fodder. He began with chartered ships for his imports but bought a few ships in late 1880s and could call himself a ship-owner. In 1895, the newly started shipowning company Vesterhavet, had a fleet of three ships. The fleet grew remarkably, and merely five years later, another seven ships had been added to the fleet. Lauritzen was both a shipowner and a shipbroker until 1918 when he closed down his shipbroking office. Apart from shipping, many of Lauritzen’s businesses were onshore. The Ditlev Lauritzen as portrayed by re- searcher Ole Lange is a truly dynamic entrepreneur, constantly on the move, catching new opportunities wherever they would arise. But it was the shipping business that was the core, and more precisely the transportation of coal, wood and cotton. By the end of 1914, the fleet comprised 26 ships. At about that time, the headquarters moved to Copenhagen. Sometimes Lauritzen’s ships carried fruit as a backhaul cargo – the first shipment of oranges was from the Spanish Mediterranean coast to England in a conventional general cargo vessel in 1905.

With the increase in international commerce and trade, ports have more so become crucial logistics centers. Processes to handle freight and cargo have had to be rationalized and handled as an industrial process using the most advanced concepts in logistics and technology. Recent trends in port and dock facilities include advancement of information technology such as EDI and e-commerce, which are accelerating the integration of transport systems. Ports are also having to accommodate larger ships by deepening and widening channels and constructing new berthing facilities with sufficient water depth and length. In general the port authorities own most of port assets such as breakwater, access channel and land. A large proportion of cargo handling equipment at container and break-bulk terminals is however owned by private companies. In assessing property risk at a port it is importance to know the customer’s business purpose and to identify ownership of property and the customer’s liability toward it. The majority of port authorities are fully responsible for navigational aids, harbor master services, dredging, and port information. Other public and private bodies provide services such as pilotage, stevedoring, towage, ship agents, land transport and other shipping services. Property at a port is not limited to buildings and their contents, but includes mobile equipment such as the quayside or dockside cranes, rubber tire or rail mounted gantry cranes, staddle carriers, forklifts etc.
