3 FC Shakhtar Donetsk - Manchester United FC Wednesday 2 October 2013 - 20.45CET, (21.45 local time) Match press kit Donbass Arena, Donetsk Match background

FC Shakhtar Donetsk and Manchester United FC will meet for the first time when they face off at the Donbass Arena with the early leadership of Group A at stake. • Both teams took three points on matchday one, Shakhtar winning 2-0 at Real Sociedad de Fútbol and United beating Bayer 04 Leverkusen 4-2, so a victory for either would give them a clear lead at the Group A summit. Match background • Shakhtar helped eliminate United's Premier League rivals Chelsea FC in last season's group stage. Mircea Lucescu's men beat the then holders 2-1 at home through goals from Alex Teixeira and Fernandinho and only lost the return fixture 3-2 after conceding in added time. • Shakhtar have won all three previous UEFA Champions League fixtures against English visitors to Donetsk, with earlier successes against Arsenal FC in the 2000/01 first group stage (3-0) and 2010/11 group stage (2-1). Overall their home record against Premier League sides is W4 D1 L0. • United's only previous encounters with Ukrainian opposition came against FC Dynamo Kyiv, most recently in the 2007/08 group stage when they won 4-2 in Kyiv and 4-0 in Manchester. Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney both found the net in Ukraine, while Rooney was also on target at Old Trafford. • Ryan Giggs played in the English champions' first visit to Ukraine, a 0-0 draw at Dynamo in their opening match of the 2000/01 first group stage. • Shakhtar won their opening two home games in the 2012/13 group stage but then lost 1-0 to Juventus and drew 2-2 with Borussia Dortmund in the last 16. United's results on the road followed an identical pattern as they won twice before losing 1-0 at Galatasaray AŞ and then drawing 1-1 at Real Madrid CF in an ultimately losing effort in the round of 16. Team ties • As an FC Dinamo Bucureşti player, Lucescu made his debut in UEFA club competition in a 1-1 home draw with West Bromwich Albion FC in the 1968/69 European Cup Winners' Cup second round. Two years later he played for Romania against England in a 1-0 defeat in the 1970 FIFA World Cup group stage. He coached Romania when they drew home and away with England in qualifying for the 1986 World Cup finals, narrowly missing a return to Mexico. • As coach of FC Internazionale Milano, Lucescu suffered UEFA Champions League elimination against United in the 1998/99 quarter-finals. Giggs played in both matches as that season's eventual winners prevailed 2-0 at Old Trafford before a 1-1 draw in Italy. Phil Neville, now United's first-team coach, was a late substitute at San Siro. • On 2 October 2003 Lucescu oversaw a 2-0 UEFA Champions League victory at Chelsea for Beşiktaş JK, though the Istanbul club later lost by the same score at home to the London side and had to settle for third place in their group. • David Moyes' Everton FC came from behind twice to win 3-2 at FC Metalist Kharkiv in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup first round, completing a 4-3 aggregate success. • Rooney scored past Andriy Pyatov at the Donbass Arena when England beat Ukraine 1-0 to eliminate the co-hosts from UEFA EURO 2012, booking their own quarter-final place. Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Shakhtar's Yaroslav Rakitskiy also featured in that match on 19 June 2012. • Pyatov kept a clean sheet when Ukraine drew 0-0 at home to England in World Cup qualifying in Kyiv on 10 September. Olexandr Kucher, Taras Stepanenko and Vyacheslav Shevchuk also featured for the home team, with Young and Tom Cleverley second-half substitutes for England. • On 2 June this year was a late substitute in the Brazil side held 2-2 at home by an England team featuring Rooney – scorer of the visitors' second goal – along with Michael Carrick and Phil Jones. • Rooney scored twice for England in a 4-2 victory over a Croatia side that included substitute Darijo Srna at UEFA EURO 2004. Srna was in the Croatia team that won 3-2 at Wembley to eliminate England in UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying. • Eduardo played with Robin van Persie at Arsenal between 2007 and 2010. The Croatia striker neither scored nor finished on the winning side in four attempts against United, including a substitute appearance in Arsenal's UEFA Champions League semi-final first-leg defeat at Old Trafford in 2008/09. • Serhiy Kryvtsov was in the Ukraine team that beat Welbeck's England 2-0 in the 2009 UEFA European Under-19 Championship final at Donetsk's RSC Olympiyskiy Stadium. • Anderson and Ilsinho were members of the Brazil squad which took bronze at the 2008 Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing.

However, a 4-1 away defeat means United have now lost four of the last five league encounters with City. • Javier Hernández struck the only goal (46) as United knocked Liverpool FC out of the League Cup last Wednesday to reach the last 16 of the competition they last won in 2010. They are at home to Norwich City FC in the next round.

9 FC Shakhtar Donetsk - Manchester United FC Wednesday 2 October 2013 - 20.45CET, (21.45 local time) Match press kit Donbass Arena, Donetsk Head coach FC Shakhtar Donetsk: Mircea Lucescu Date of birth: 29 July 1945 Nationality: Romanian Playing career: FC Dinamo Bucureşti, FC Sportul Studenţesc Bucureşti, FC Corvinul Hunedoara Coaching career: FC Corvinul Hunedoara, Romania, FC Dinamo Bucureşti, AC Pisa 1909, Brescia Calcio, AC Reggiana 1919, FC Rapid Bucureşti (twice), FC Internazionale Milano, Galatasaray AŞ, Beşiktaş JK, FC Shakhtar Donetsk • A useful striker for Dinamo in the 1960s and 1970s, winning six league titles and 70 caps for Romania as well as playing at the 1970 FIFA World Cup, Lucescu became Corvinul player-coach in his early 30s and went on to win three Romanian championships with Dinamo. • Fluent in six foreign languages and regarded as a workaholic, he cemented his reputation at Pisa, Brescia and Reggiana before returning home for the first of two spells as Rapid coach, winning the league in 1998 and 2000. • Returned to Serie A for a short spell at Inter in 1998/99 before a one-season return to Rapid. After joining Galatasaray in 2000 he lifted the UEFA Super Cup in his first game as coach and took them to the Turkish title in 2001/02 – a feat he repeated with Beşiktaş in 2002/03, their centenary season. • Left Beşiktaş in 2004 and promptly joined Shakhtar, leading the Donetsk club to titles in 2005, 2006 and 2008, when his side also won the Ukrainian Cup. • In May 2009, Lucescu's Shakhtar became the first Ukrainian club to win the UEFA Cup. He suffered a heart attack that summer but swiftly returned to work, guiding the club to another league title at the end of the season and winning the domestic double in 2010/11, when Shakhtar also reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. More success followed, Luscescu's team completing a hat-trick of domestic doubles in 2012/13. Manchester United FC: David Moyes Date of birth: 25 April 1963 Nationality: Scottish Playing career: Celtic FC, Cambridge United FC, Bristol City FC, Shrewsbury Town FC, Dunfermline Athletic FC, Hamilton Academical FC, Preston North End FC Coaching career: Preston North End FC, Everton FC, Manchester United FC • Moyes started out with Celtic but spent much of his playing career as a centre-back in England and Scotland's lower leagues. • The tall Scot appeared more for Preston than for any other club, and it was with the north-west English team that Moyes – ever the keen student of the game – first tested his managerial potential between 1998 and 2002. • Became regarded as one of the country's most promising young managers, taking Preston from the third tier to the brink of promotion to the Premier League before accepting the Everton job in March 2002. • Succeeding Walter Smith, he breathed new life into Everton immediately, his first full season seeing Wayne Rooney's emergence and a first top-half finish since 1996. The Blues went on to finish fourth in the Premier League in 2004/05 but missed out on a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage after a qualifying loss to Villarreal CF. • Moyes subsequently led an Everton team featuring astute signings such as Tim Cahill, Mikel Arteta and Phil Jagielka to three further European qualifications and the 2009 FA Cup final, yet silverware eluded him in his 11 years at Goodison Park. In May 2013, not long after turning 50, Moyes was named as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor as Manchester United manager.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Last season Chelsea FC became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round to PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently Mario Gomez for FC Bayern München on matchday eight in 2011/12. • Barcelona have finished as group winners on 14 occasions, one more than Manchester United. • Barcelona hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with nine, between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November 2005) is also a competition record. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, most recently Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record that was equalled by FC Nordsjælland last season. The previous highest total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96). • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
