  • Automotive Industry
I Automotive industry AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY THE AEROSPACE INDUSTRY I www.sario.sk 1 I Automotive industry Automotive industry in Slovakia Automobile industry is a key industrial and economic sector in many of the Central and Eastern European countries. The auto industry has been an important source of foreign direct investment for this region for the past 20 years. Car producers have sought to take advantage of well-educated and highly productive labour force with relatively low wages and advanced infrastructure base that closely links these economies to the core of Europe as well as Slovakia‘s strategic position for export to the East. Slovakia has become an important global automotive center, producing the highest number of cars per capita in the world, especially thanks to the presence of three world-known car manufacturers: Volkswagen (Bratislava); PSA Peugeot Citroën (Trnava) and KIA Motors (Žilina) as well as the major global automotive suppliers. The development of the automotive industry in Slovakia and integration into the important global automotive centres began in the early 1990s when the German company Volkswagen AG decided to start the car production near Bratislava. This important milestone helped to develop the economy after the end of markets of the former “Eastern Bloc” and the shutdown of armaments production in Slovakia. The creation of a supply chain started hand in hand with the arrival of Volkswagen, and thus further investments into the automotive industry rose in the supply sector. Slovakia had started a new path of development of industrial production, above all in the sectors of automotive and engineering.

  • This Book Introduces Ten Victims of Stalinism Who Became Political Prisoners in Their Own Country
This book introduces ten victims of Stalinism who became political prisoners in their own country. Political persecution changed the lives of individuals, families, and perhaps whole generations in many places. Here we deal with the 1950s in former Czechoslovakia. Young Czech authors, introduced five male and five female forced laborers in communist prisons and uranium camps. Their life-stories show the everyday life behind the Iron Curtain where sudden captivity for ideological reasons was a daily bread. All the narratives were recorded in 2007–2008 using the method of oral history interview. The first edition was co-financed by the European Union within the programme ”Europe for Citizens” 2007–2013. The second edition was published by the Czech non- profit organization called Političtí vězni.cz (Political Prisoners.eu) established by the authors in 2010. This book is meant as an educational as well as a popularization tool. Witnesses of the past eighty years described what they had gone through in a very authentic way. What and how they tell the authors had one major aim: to share the secrets of those who were meant to be forgotten and thus commemorate the Czechoslovak political prisoners of the initial phase of the socialist dictatorship. www.politicalprisoners.eu www.politictivezni.cz Recommended price: 190 CZK (8 EUR / 9 USD) 9 7 8 8 0 2 6 0 8 4 1 2 9 ISBN 978-80-260-8412-9 Czechoslovak Political Prisoners 1 Tomáš Bouška, Klára Pinerová: Czechoslovak Political Prisoners. The European Journal of International Law Vol. 16 no.1 © EJIL 2005; all rights reserved ........................................................................................... Rybná 9, Praha 1: Restitution and Memory in International Human Rights Law Patrick Macklem* Abstract The history of Rybná 9, Praha 1 – a building in the old city of Prague – illustrates how international human rights law, producing new forms of legal right and obligation, participates in the turbulence of modernity. With its capacity to remember the past through the discourse of human rights, international law engages and formalizes a politics of collective memory. This article explores the relationship between international human rights law and collective memory in the context of challenges to post-communist restitution initiatives in Central and Eastern Europe. Rybná 9 formed the basis of one such challenge before the United Nations Human Rights Committee. Other restitution cases have proceeded to the European Court of Human Rights. Whereas the Human Rights Committee is willing to remember certain pasts as a matter of equality, the European Court of Human Rights approaches equality with a modernist impulse to repudiate history. This divergence is especially acute when comparing how the field engages the collective memories of Jews and the Holocaust and those of Sudeten Germans after the war. International legal engagement with the politics of collective memory thereby reflects broader debates about the emergent nature of European citizenship. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed.

  • BRATISLAVA – the New Motor City!
BRATISLAVA – the new motor city! The KONGRES Magazine team headed to Bratislava, Slovakia, at the beginning of November to inspect the city’s automotive industry. We must admit, we couldn’t hide the surprise on our faces when we learned that Slovakia has been the world's largest producer of cars per capita (as an example – 1,040,000 cars were produced in the year of 2016 alone, for a country of a 5 million population.) Nov 21, 2017 Photo credit: Slovakia Ring Slovakia is attracting more and more car manufacturers due to national initiatives, low working and living costs, and its favorable logistical location. The country’s powerful car production represents 44% of its entire industry and Slovakia now has the world’s highest car production per capita. In addition to Kia, Slovakia has also managed to attract Volkswagen, Peugeot, and Citroen, and has recently celebrated the start of construction of a new Jaguar and Land Rover factory in Nitra, which won the investment against competition from Poland, Hungary, and Mexico. Alongside car manufacturers, Bratislava is also known for its innovation, thanks to the suppliers of optoelectronic, robotic and software sector. The automotive sector also generates a lot of events and is helping Bratislava become more interesting for car launches. VOLKSWAGEN Slovakia At Volkswagen Slovakia, we got to meet spokesperson Mgr. Lucia Kovarovič Makayová and discuss the impact of the automotive industry on the everyday life of Bratislava inhabitants. As she said, “Slovakia is an automobile superpower. We produce more cars per capita than any other country in the world.
