Using professional wrestling as the context, this research paper will endeavor to understand the underlying conscious and subconscious biases and stereotypes that one might harbour with respect to discourses of gender and sexuality. Travers Scott, Committee Chair Dr. Erin Ash Dr. Darren Linvill ABSTRACT For a long time, professional wrestling has existed on the outskirts of society, with the idea that it was just for college-aged men. With the rise of the popularity of the World Wrestling Entertainment promotion, professional wrestling entered the mainstream. Celebrities often appear at wrestling shows, and the WWE often hires mainstream musical artists to perform at their biggest shows, WrestleMania and Summer Slam. Despite this still-growing popularity, there still exists a gap between men’s wrestling and women’s wrestling. Often the women aren’t allowed long match times, and for the longest time sometimes weren’t even on the main shows.

  • Playing by FIFA's Rules: the Politics and Potential
Playing by FIFA’s Rules: The Politics and Potential Legacy of Port Elizabeth’s Hosting 2010 World Cup Matches Abstract Port Elizabeth was the first South African city to complete construction of a brand new venue to host 2010 FIFA World Cup matches. The metropolitan authority backed by the private sector hopes this spectacular event will change the city‟s Cinderella status and transform it into a “winning city”. However, meeting FIFA‟s requirements has many pitfalls. The escalating cost of the stadium has contributed to the metropole‟s budget shortfall thereby hindering its own service delivery obligations. Long-term developmental goals will be sacrificed for the sake of enhancing the city‟s image. Consequently, the legacy of the World Cup will be economically uneven and politically fractious. 8.447 mots, 54.472 signes (espaces et note en bas page inclus) Playing by FIFA’s Rules: The Politics and Potential Legacy of Port Elizabeth’s Hosting 2010 World Cup Matches The 2010 Fédération International de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup is billed as the largest sporting event ever held on South African soil. The spectacle will dwarf the Rugby and Cricket World Cups held in 1995 and 2003, respectively, in terms of the size of live and television audiences, the scale of advertising and sponsorship deals, as well as the amount of government investment in infrastructure. The staging of such mega-events confirms the African National Congress government‟s embrace of neo-liberalism for it reiterates the country‟s place within the world of economic globalisation. FIFA operates within this trade/tourism nexus and the 2010 World Cup will be a “mega-event” in every sense of the word.

Cubed Circle Newsletter – Payback 2013 In this week’s newsletter we look at the 2013 Payback pay-per-view, as well as the fallout from RAW, the rating that the show did, NXT, a decent edition of iMPACT, All Japan fallout and SmackDown. It is a smaller issue than usual, but fear not! As next week we will be back with a look at Saturday’s New Japan Dominion show, as well as ROH’s Best in the World iPPV. We also have a few big changes coming to the newsletter in the coming months, so stay tuned for that. And with all of that out of the way, I hope that you enjoy the newsletter and have a great week. - Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter Editor News WWE Continue Great Run with Payback The past week and a half or so has been a great period for the WWE from a quality perspective, and they continued that run this week with a their 2013 Payback show from the Allstate Arena in Chicago. Going into the show I wasn’t expecting a blow-away card, but they over delivered with some great moments in front of a crowd that has been arguably one of their most consistently great ones over the past few years. The show was expected to be somewhat of an unnoteworthy show, but the opposite was actually the case, with multiple title changing hands, and seeds for the biggest feud of the summer, Brock Lesnar versus CM Punk, being planted during a great outing between CM Punk and Chris Jericho.

  • Unexpected Events & Brand Loyalty the Case Of
UNEXPECTED EVENTS & BRAND LOYALTY THE CASE OF CRUSADERS RUGBY CLUB by Paula Rochelle Ash A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Marketing Victoria University of Wellington 2020 Abstract Prompted by the Christchurch mosque massacres of March 2019, considerable concern was expressed by society around the world, and New Zealand in particular, about anything that might provoke further attacks on Muslims. Consequently, the branding of the Crusaders rugby club in Christchurch came under scrutiny - and became the topic of this research. The research questions were: which brand elements of a sports team would have the greatest impact on attitude to that brand and consequently the brand loyalty; and how will time and an unexpected event change attitudes to a brand, especially the influence of brand elements? Although indications are that sports related brand elements should influence brand attitude and in turn positively influence brand loyalty, this has never been researched against the backdrop of an unexpected event. Adopting a post-positivist approach, a quantitative study was undertaken to answer the research questions. An anonymous online survey yielded 361 usable responses, of which 103 were from Crusaders fans. The analysis was conducted as two studies: (1) the whole participant group and (2) only the Crusaders fans. Study one provided demographic data and consumer views on sports brand elements influencing brand attitudes, either side of an unexpected event. For study two, factor analysis and structural equation modelling provided an indication of the hypothesized relationships between certain brand elements (name, logo, characters, pageantry) and past success on attitude to the brand and thence to brand loyalty.

2014 was a unique year for pro-wrestling, one that will undoubtedly be viewed as historically significant in years to follow. Whether it is to be reflected upon positively or negatively is not only highly subjective, but also context-specific with major occurrences transpiring across the pro-wrestling world over the last 12 months, each with its own strong, and at times far reaching, consequences. The WWE launched its much awaited Network, New Japan continued to expand, CMLL booked lucha's biggest match in well over a decade, culminating in the country's first million dollar gate, TNA teetered more precariously on the brink of death than perhaps ever before, Daniel Bryan won the WWE's top prize, Dragon Gate and DDT saw continued success before their loyal niche audiences, Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk departed the WWE with one ending up in the most unexpected of places, a developing and divergent style produced some of the best indie matches of the year, the European scene flourished, the Shield disbanded, Batista returned, Daniel Bryan relinquished his championship, and the Undertaker's streak came to an unexpected and dramatic end. These are but some of the happenings, which made 2014 the year that it was, and it is in this year-book that we look to not only recap all of these events and more, but also contemplate their relevance to the greater pro-wrestling landscape, both for 2015 and beyond. It should be stated that this year-book was inspired by the DKP Annuals that were released in 2011 and 2012, in fact, it was the absence of a 2013 annual that inspired us to produce a year-book for 2014.
