First, you’ll travel to the outskirts of the city to tour the UNESCO World Heritage Boyana Church, a Bulgarian Orthodox site of worship built in three major sections over an immense time span stretching from the 10th to the mid-19th centuries. The history here runs very deep, as evidenced by the large number of beautifully-rendered frescoes representing prominent Biblical stories and figures. You’ll have the chance to view three separate historical layers of frescoes, all carefully preserved in a climate-controlled setting. View the exceptional paintings from the year 1259, as well as many shining examples of the Tarnovo School of Painting. Next, drive into the mountains to visit the striking UNESCO World Heritage Rila Monastery, a crucial Eastern Orthodox religious center and centuries-old cache of Bulgarian artistic, literary, and cultural treasures. Founded in the 10th century by Ivan of Rila, a hermit and spiritual leader, the complex was restored and rebuilt during the 19th century. The interior frescoes are exceptionally vivid. Its activities include the execution of projects in order to promote the entire Balkan region as a tourist destination. In addition, its purpose is to restore the positive image of the Balkans in the public eye and promote their exceptional natural, histo- rical, cultural and anthropological heritage. The name of the Association, BALKANIA, sounds like a name of a new imaginary land on the territories represented by the hospitality of their population. One of the objectives of the project is to create a virtual geographic region that includes the territories and regions which are today identified with the term BALKANS. The efforts of the Association are aimed at channeling its energy to all forms that are alterna- tive to mass tourism, and which are in terms of the development of macro sectors identified as natural tourism, rural tourism and cultural tourism. BALKANIA is established on 24 .03.2009 in Skopje, in agreement with the Macedonian laws. It is formed by a group of partners from Macedonia, Bulgaria and Italy, with members from Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro , Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina ,Greece , Kosovo and Ma- cedonia .
