He is 5 ft. 5 or 6 in. tall, weighs about 170, has thinning hair, face, ears, neck and hands are marked by old burn scars, and wears glasses some of the time. He dresses very well and quietly, speaks English with a heavy accent, signs his name in English but cannot read or write it. His wife is named Jennie, and their address is 410 S. Gladstone Blvd., Phone - Benton 4184. Joe began in the extortion racket after his arrival in Kansas City in 1912, and later got into the sugar business. During prohibition, he and his Mafia pals held firm control of the supplies used to make whiskey, as well as controlling the manufacture and sale of the finished product. In the 1930's, he was one of the organizers of a huge narcotics ring, dealing in heroin, which was broken in 1942, with the details listed in the FOLLMER testimony. He also has received, it is alleged, a cut of all rackets operated in Kansas City, including gambling, policy, labor rackets, etc. DiGiovanni is president and one of the two principal partners in the Midwest Distributing Company, a wholesale liquor firm at 1109 Cherry Street, Business Telephone - Harrison 2722. This is the largest liquor wholesale firm in Kansas City, and it holds the exclusive franchise on all Seagram's products for Jackson County, which includes Kansas City. The firm was involved in a huge interstate black market whiskey ring, and on December 21, 1943, there were arrested Scarface, PETE DIGIOVANNI, BINAGGIO, NORRIS SALWINSKAY, alias MORRIE SOL, a dope peddler, killer and labor racketeer; PETE SPALITTO, MAX DUCOV, LOGAN IMHOFF, CURTIS ATTENBERRY, JACK GASBORO, FRANK DEMARA: SAM DIGIOVANNI, a nephew of Joe and Pete and manager of Midwest, and PETE GREGO, a Midwest employee.

Collectively, they have crafted a cohesive mythological narrative of Siegel’s life one focused upon “rags to riches” success and his contributions to the development of Las Vegas, Nevada. Most attribute to Siegel the inspiration for not only the Flamingo Hotel‐Casino, but also for the glamorous, classy, flashy resort city Las Vegas became after World War II. This paper describes the development of the myth since Siegel’s murder in 1947 as well as how it has been sustained. of Watergate burgler Frank Sturgis. The FBI questioned Sturgis about the whereabouts of Pichardo in the course of their investigation of Browder. In 1978 I asked Sturgis if he knew Browder. He told me he was "not sure". In 1959 Browder was arrested for possession of $136,000. worth of stolen securities. Browder claimed that the bonds, which were stolen from two Canadian banks, did not come from the National Crime Syndicate. Accord- ing to Browder, the July 26 Movement had given him the stolen securities. The available evidence contradicted this - Browder had told Jesse Vickers, who had been arrested with Pichardo in 1953, that "Cleveland Mob people" were connected with the securities. Browder's passport revealed he had recerttly returned from Switzerland, where the Mob laundered millions of dollars and his wallet contained the name of an attorney 1,:o defended numerous Mob figures. Another of Browder's associates, Paul Hickman, told the FBI that Vito Genovese, a nationally known hoodlum, had advised Browder to "shut-up" about the origin of the bonds. During Browder's trial he was asked if he knew National Crime Syndicate member Sam Manarino. Browder answered - "I was introduced to him by one of Carlos Prios' followers, on the assumption that Mr. Manarino was going to supply some money for arms for some of the Cubans involved in fighting against Batista. I understood that this money came from sources that had gambling concessions in Cuba or slot machines in Cuba; that he was trying to protect in the event that Castro overthrew Batista". Sam Manarino, reputed Mafia-boss of Western Pennsylvania, was involved in a bizarre plot to convert part of the Mob's 13 million dollars in stolen Canadian bonds* into cash to buy up arms for Fidel Castro.

Incredibly, aer Brooklier got hit with a 20-month prison term for racketeering, conspiracy and extortion, he named Fratianno as the acting boss of his LA crime family.
