Be transported to a miniature winter wonderland as model trains zip through an enchanting display of more than 175 New York landmarks, each delightfully re-created from natural materials such as birch bark, lotus pods, acorns, and cinnamon sticks. Marvel at G-scale locomotives humming past replicas of familiar sights such as the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, and Rockefeller Center on nearly a half-mile of track. This year’s exhibition showcases Central Park, with new replicas of its iconic architectural features, including Belvedere Castle, the Dairy, and more—all presented in a uniquely immersive special exhibition space adjacent to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. The New York Botanical Garden is an iconic living museum, a major educational institution, and a renowned plant research and conservation organization. Founded in 1891 and now a National Historic Landmark, it is one of the greatest botanical gardens in the world and the largest in any city in the United States, distinguished by the beauty of its diverse landscape and extensive collections and gardens, as well as by the scope and excellence of its multidisciplinary exhibitions and programs. HOLIDAY LIGHTS aT THe BRONX ZOO The Bronx Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the United States, comprising 265 acres of park lands and naturalistic habitats separated by the Bronx River. Holiday Lights is coming back to the Bronx Zoo! The zoo will be decorated for the holiday season. How we helped the oldest library in New York energize its brand while maintaining its distinguished character. © 2012 BERNHARDT FUDYMA DESIGN GROUP www.bfdg.com ConteXt GeorGe WashinGton read here In 1754, when there was no library in the city open to the public, the New York Society - a group of civic-minded individuals - formed a library in the belief that a subscription library which anyone could join,* and offering a broad range of books, “would be very useful as well as ornamental to the City.” It opened in a room in the old City Hall and for a century and a half, until the founding of the public library system, was known as ‘the city library.’ Broad Street looking north to Federal Hall. The Library was located on the 2nd floor in the west wing. During the Revolution, the Library’s books were looted by British soldiers occupying Manhattan. Some were torn up to make wadding for rifles and others were sold for rum. After the war a few books that had been stored at St. Paul’s Chapel in lower Manhattan were recovered, and others were found through advertisement. In 1785 when New York became the nation’s capital and Congress occupied the building (then renamed Federal Hall), the Library served as the first Library of Congress and was used by George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr among others. * Membership libraries began in the 18th century in America when societies or groups of individuals joined to purchase books for a commonly run library.

FROM MANHATTAN’S EASTSIDE FDR Drive North to the RFK Bridge (formerly the Triboro Bridge). Follow signs to the Bronx and the Bruckner Expressway. Take Brucknew towards New Haven (stay left); after draqbridge, exit right for the Bronx River Parkway North. Take exit 7W for Fordham Rd/US-1 S. Make a slight right onto E. Fordham Rd. At the Traffic light, make a left onto Southern Boulevard. After approximately ¾ of a mile, make a left onto E. 182nd Street. Make a left onto Crotona Parkway and enter the Southern Blvd Entrance (Gate C). DO NOT TAKE EXIT 6! FROM MANHATTAN’S WESTSIDE Henry Hudson North to Mosholu Parkway (Exit 24). After about 2 miles, the Mosholu turns into a local road with stoplights. Students have at their fingertips the wisdom of the ages and the accumulated knowledge of millions of individuals – as well as an overwhelming amount of misinformation, propaganda and pure nonsense. The ability to sift the important from the irrelevant and to find clear answers in a sea of data has become an important survival skill, one that students will be able to use in almost all aspects of their lives. That is what research is all about. What is Research? Students often think of research as "something scientists do", a complicated and mystifying activity that generally takes place in a laboratory. Depending on which movie they see, research can either lead to wondrous breakthroughs, like time travel, or terrible catastrophes, like giant lizards stomping large cities. Of course, neither one of those scenarios is an accurate picture of real research. In its most basic form, research is asking a question and gathering information to answer it.
