207 Howard Goldblatt’s Translations of Mo Yan’s Works into English: Reader Oriented Approach NISHIT KUMAR Abstract This article examines the strategies followed by Howard Goldblatt, the official translator of Mo Yan while translating his works from Chinese into English. Mo Yan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012 and critics argued that it was Goldblatt’s translation that was mainly responsible for Mo Yan’s Nobel Prize in Literature. Though Mo Yan’s works in translation are available in various languages, it is Goldblatt’s version that has become most popular. Therefore, from the perspective of Translation Studies, it would be interesting to identify the techniques used by Goldblatt that make his translations so special. The present paper compares titles, structure, and culture-specific expressions in the original and its English translation to identify the strategies followed by Howard Goldblatt in translating Chinese literary texts. Keywords: Mo Yan, Howard Goldblatt, Chinese literature, Translation strategies. Introduction As an ancient civilization, China has rich literature spanning several millennia, touching upon a wide range of literary genres enriched by numerous creative writers. However, until the 1980s, modern Chinese literature was vastly under- represented within the purview of world literature and did not gain significant readership in other parts of the world. As a result, China has been seeking international recognition for its vast body of literature. The Chinese authors have been making an effort for the Nobel Prize in Literature from as far back as the 1940s. Department of English The Reception of Mo Yan in the British and North American Literary Centers Victoria Xiaoyang Liu Master Thesis Literature Autumn 2014 Supervisor: Stefan Helgesson Abstract This thesis investigates the two major conflicting modes of interpretation applied to Mo Yan’s literary texts diachronically and synchronically in order to reveal both the aesthetic imperative and the liberating force of the British and North American literary centers in receiving literature from the periphery. After an introduction to the centers’ disparate responses to the paradigmatic shift of the local Chinese literary trend in the 1980s, the thesis continues with a theoretical discussion on reader-response theory and the uneven power relations between the literary center and the periphery. Jauss’s concept of horizon of expectation and Fish’s interpretive community are adopted to stress openness in interpretation while Casanova’s conceptualization of the world republic of letters provides the framework to study the competition among interpretive communities for the legitimacy of their respective interpretation. The study of the press reception of Mo Yan focuses on the ongoing shift of horizon of expectation from the dominating political and representational mode of interpretation to one that stresses the literary and fictional nature of literature. The study shows that the imperative in the reception of Mo Yan is the extension of the Western cultural hegemony sustained by an Orientalist dichotomy. The academic promotion in the public sphere, however, shows critics’ effort to subvert such domination by suggesting an alternative mode that brings the Chinese literary context to bear on the interpretation. In addition to this, Mo Yan’s strategic negotiation with the dominating mode of reception is analysed in my close reading of POW!. -

Paper Republic April , The Chinese Book Market December Party Congress Dominates Published materials related to the th National Congress of the CPC, held in November, continue to skew market statistics. The non-fiction charts, in particular, are dominated by political reports and related Party publications, much of which are required reading (or at least required purchasing) for government offices around the country. The People’s Publishing House, sole authorized publisher of these materials, saw a corresponding bump in business. Mo Yan Fever Cools The last few months of saw a huge leap in sales of literature, mostly related to Mo Yan’s Nobel Prize win. Complete sets of his works, published by the Shang- hai Arts & Literature Publishing House and the Writers Publishing House, continued to sell very well, though numbers are falling. Foreign Literature Elements of the fantastic are much in evidence: popular foreign fiction this month includes Life of Pi and The Hobbit, both riding high on movie tie-ins; two older works by Gabriel García Márquez (the newly-authorized translation of One Hundred Years of Solitude is rising on the charts); J.K. Rowling’s non-fantastic novel, A Casual Vacancy, is losing ground. Economy a Hot Topic One particularly strong showing this month was Credit Factory, written by economist and banker Chen Shi. Chen reflects on his experiences making business loans to small and medium enterprises during his years in banking, much of it working for the Hong Kong and Macau branches of the Bank of China. The tendency of Chinese banks to lend only to large state-owned enterprises is a noted stumbling block in the growth of China’s civil-sector economy, and in this book Chen outlines how banks can break this habit and help China’s smaller economic entities flourish.
