Växjö: Musicology 2005. 80p. The main purpose of this essay is on one hand to try to find and explain the formula of success of the rock group Status Quo, and on the other to elucidate and explain the foundation and essence in the music made by Status Quo, but also to study how, if and why the foundation and essence have changed over the years. The method of investigation is partly based on a musical analysis of three albums from three different periods: Hello! (1973), Ain´t Complaining (1988) and Heavy Traffic (2002), and partly on a sociological study of the group’s career between 1962 and today, 2005. The first part of the essay concerns the period between 1962-1973 with an analysis of the album Hello!; the second part concerns the period 1974-1988 and the album Ain´t Complaining; finally, the third part concerns the years between 1989-2002 with an intensified analysis of the album Heavy Traffic. In the forth part of the essay I discuss the career of Status Quo from a sociological point of view. I run to the conclusion that the essence of Status Quo is the boogie-woogie comp on Fender guitar by Rick Parfitt, the riff on Francis Rossis´ Fender guitar in combination with the base, the piano and the drums.

    Jonathan Edwards: “Born to be a Man of Strife” The Evolution of a Persona Carol Elaine BALL BTh (ACTh), GradDipMin (QBCM), BA, MPhil (Queensland) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2012 School of History, Philosophy, Religion, and Classics ABSTRACT It has been rightly noted that, while three centuries of scholarship on Jonathan Edwards has revealed much of his philosophy, theology and epistemology, yet we know very little of the person himself. Using insights from philosophical and literary disciplines as applied to the field of persona, this thesis examines a representative selection of the writings of Jonathan Edwards, in order to trace and assess the evolution of Jonathan Edwards’s persona in the context of eighteenth-century New England. In particular, it shows how the Edwards persona was developed not only as a result of a carefully crafted intentional strategy on his part but also in response to the unplanned but inevitable conflicts that plagued his ecclesiastical career. The tension between his innately contemplative nature and the active demands of public office as he executed his professional role was a constant source of internal and public strife for Edwards. He was, as he termed it, “born to be a man of strife.” This tension was a major factor in the self-fashioning which Edwards progressively underwent, and so the motif of persona development through conflicts and crises runs through the thesis. While such tension caused him to be ousted from his public office, it also led ultimately to a personal liberation in which his authentic self was expressed.

Farmer Jennifer Higginbotham Copyright by Mira Assaf Kafantaris 2014 Abstract This dissertation discusses the Stuart stage’s participation in an ongoing reflection on royal marriage in the early modern period. I focus on the taxonomies of otherness, religion, foreign policy, gender politics, and race that Shakespeare and Fletcher’s Henry VIII (1613), Fletcher’s The Island Princess (1621), and Massinger’s The Roman Actor (1626) stage in order to understand how dramatic texts incorporated the vocabulary of dynasticism into their fabric. Taken collectively, these plays suggest that the belief in the efficacy of royal marriage is illusory at a historical juncture when matrimonial politics occupied center stage. My analysis starts with the competing Spanish, French, and Savoyard marriage proposals for the Prince of Wales (1612-14), which were intended to balance Princess Elizabeth’s marriage to the militant Protestant prince, Frederick V of the Rhine, where I argue that Henry VIII breaks the prescriptive binary of “foreign” and “domestic.” I then propose a new way of reading the drama surrounding the famous Spanish match (1621-1624) by showing how The Island Princess invokes the interlocking themes of “virtuous pagans” and imperial expansion to stage a successful but qualified dynastic marriage that can only be achieved after the use of military force.

In particular, I argue that, contrary to the claims of some Edwards scholars, Edwards clearly affirms the doctrine of divine simplicity throughout his writings as it was held among the Reformed scholastics. Through an exposition of his Discourse on the Trinity in light of its historical and polemical context, I demonstrate both Edwards’s orthodoxy and his distinct innovations in expressing the orthodox view of the Trinity. Notably, I show that Edwards distinguishes the persons of the Godhead by means of a strong psychological account of the Trinity positing that the only real distinctions in God are those of being, understanding, and will, which correspond to the three persons of the Godhead. Additionally, Edwards maintains the unity of the Godhead by appeal to divine simplicity, whereby “everything (real) in God is God.” Finally, Edwards upholds the personhood of each person through the biblical doctrine of perichoresis.
