NORTON INTRODUCTION Conservation Research Group Coprosma is a Pacific Ocean-centred genus School of Forestry comprising some 110 species of trees and shrubs University of Canterbury (Oliver 1935; Van Balgooy 1966; Van Royen 1983; Private Bag 4800 Gardner 2002; Utteridge 2002). The genus is Christchurch, New Zealand distributed in temperate and montane-tropical Email: [email protected] regions from Borneo south-east to Australia, New P. J. de LANGE Zealand, and associated subantarctic islands, and Science & Research Unit across the Pacific Ocean to Hawai’i and Juan Auckland Conservancy Fernandez Islands. The centre of diversity for the Department of Conservation genus lies within New Zealand (Oliver 1935; Heads Private Bag 68908 1996), where there are c. 50–55 taxa formally Newton recognised (Eagle 1982; Dawson 2000; de Lange & Auckland, New Zealand Gardner 2002; de Lange et al. 2002) and at least a further seven entities awaiting formal recognition (cf. Eagle 1982). Abstract A new species, Coprosma fowerakeri, is One of these entities awaiting formal recognition, described from alpine habitats of the South Island, seemingly first recognised as distinct by the late New Zealand. Previously included within C. Tony Druce (1920–1999), as indicated by his pseudocuneata, it is distinguished by its low numerous collections in the Allan Herbarium (CHR), spreading habit; stout, recurved lateral branches that and variously known as Coprosma aff. -

The new species Juncus edgariae (in section Juncotypus) is described from New Zealand. It is allied to J. gregiflorus (Australia) and J. durus (New Guinea). Introduction The genus Juncus in Australasia was studied over many years by the first author, with assistance from the second author. The death of LASJ in 1997 left half-completed manuscripts of a revision of the genus in Australasia and Malesia and also a Flora of Australia treatment, which KLW is now completing. Publication of this new species in the ‘leafless’ (i.e. with leaves reduced to cataphylls) section Juncotypus (formerly known as section Genuini — Kirschner et al. 1999) is needed in advance of the main papers so that it can be included in the family treatment in the IOPI Species Plantarum Project’s Flora of the World series being completed by a team led by Jan Kirschner (Pruhonice). Culms terete, more or less hard (i.e. relatively difficult to compress), shining, yellow-green, 40–130 cm long, 0.6–2.5 mm diam.; striations 22–60; pith interrupted with irregular, more or less circular or longitudinally ellipsoidal gaps, occasionally continuous above. -

Dr Dave Kelly is visiting Dunedin courtesy of the Royal Society of New Zealand, who have arranged for him to give the 2004 Leonard Cockayne Memorial Lecture at midday (see diary). The talk he'll be giving to the BSO is:- The current state of bird-plant mutualisms in New Zealand Abstract: In an important paper, Clout & Hay (1989, NZ J Ecol Supplement) argued that the bird-plant interaction most at risk in modern New Zealand was that of seed dispersal, especially for large-seeded trees dependent on the kereru. In this talk I review progress on this subject in the 15 years since their paper was published, and show that both pollination and dispersal are at some risk, but for different reasons. Despite extensive work on these topics, there are still some very important questions that we have only the beginnings of answers to. Some of these tentative answers are outlined, and predictions are made about the true state of mutualisms. I also review to what extent the birds depend on the plants, as well as the plants depending on the birds. 18 Sept Sat 9.30 am Expedition to the Sea shore led by Dr Lisa Russell, Teaching Fellow in Botany. The intertidal zone (region between high and low tides) is particularly stressful for seaweed growth. Despite this however, there is a high diversity of species found within this zone on southern beaches around the Otago coast. -
First Steps Towards a Floral Structural Characterization of the Major Rosid Subclades
Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2006 First steps towards a floral structural characterization of the major rosid subclades Endress, P K ; Matthews, M L Abstract: A survey of our own comparative studies on several larger clades of rosids and over 1400 original publications on rosid flowers shows that floral structural features support to various degrees the supraordinal relationships in rosids proposed by molecular phylogenetic studies. However, as many apparent relationships are not yet well resolved, the structural support also remains tentative. Some of the features that turned out to be of interest in the present study had not previously been considered in earlier supraordinal studies. The strongest floral structural support is for malvids (Brassicales, Malvales, Sapindales), which reflects the strong support of phylogenetic analyses. Somewhat less structurally supported are the COM (Celastrales, Oxalidales, Malpighiales) and the nitrogen-fixing (Cucurbitales, Fagales, Fabales, Rosales) clades of fabids, which are both also only weakly supported in phylogenetic analyses. The sister pairs, Cucurbitales plus Fagales, and Malvales plus Sapindales, are structurally only weakly supported, and for the entire fabids there is no clear support by the present floral structural data. However, an additional grouping, the COM clade plus malvids, shares some interesting features but does not appear as a clade in phylogenetic analyses. Thus it appears that the deepest split within eurosids- that between fabids and malvids - in molecular phylogenetic analyses (however weakly supported) is not matched by the present structural data. Features of ovules including thickness of integuments, thickness of nucellus, and degree of ovular curvature, appear to be especially interesting for higher level relationships and should be further explored. -

ABSTRACT Th e computation of phylogenetic diversity and phylogenetic community structure demands an accurately calibrated, high-resolution phylogeny, which refl ects current knowledge regarding diversifi cation within the group of interest. Herein we present the angiosperm phylogeny R20160415.new, which is based on the topology proposed by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group IV, a recently released compilation of angiosperm diversifi cation. R20160415.new is calibratable by diff erent sets of recently published estimates of mean node ages. Its application for the computation of phylogenetic diversity and/or phylogenetic community structure is straightforward and ensures the inclusion of up-to-date information in user specifi c applications, as long as users are familiar with the pitfalls of such hand- made supertrees. ISSN 0818 - 335X March, 1993 ASSOCIATION OF SOCIETIES FOR GROWING AUSTRALIAN PLANTS THE AUSTRALIAN DAISY STUDY GROUP NEWSLETTER N0.35 Dear Members, I have just returned from a long weekend at Mount Hotham. Five ADSG members joined a walking group and once again our alpine sojourn was marred by weather. We arrived on a day of 40'C and left in dense fog. We had one good morning of walking and botanising and thereafter intermittent rain storms, sunshine and mist. The daisies were near their peak - lush and floriferous - celmisias in dense clumps as white as fresh snow and Brachyscome nivalis in innumerable tufts scattered over the slopes. B. spathulata and B.rigidula were still in bud, but B.decipien.5 was in full flower, hiding among the grasses. Craspedias were yet to reveal their full glory, but there were enough in flower to check out the new names . In November ADSG took part in a week-long seminar 'Towards a better understanding of Australian plants' at Kawarra Gardens, Kalorama in Victoria. It was a seminar for professional landscapers, architects, local government employees, the nursery and floriculture industries and the native plant enthusiasts. The daisy display set up by Judy Barker was a drawcard and was admired by the participants, agog at the variety in the Asteraceae family. Thank you, Judy, for your continuing selfless support to the Group, and especially for three long treks up the mountain. Bev Courtney demonstrated the propagation of daisies and drew a large, appreciative audience as her considerable skills in this field are widely recognised.
