FRAME Art Fair June 9–18 FRAME is a young and innovative art fair with a unique approach that emphasizes the visitors’ and exhibitors’ experience. After Miami and Paris, FRAME is coming back to Basel in 2019 with an ambitious program. With only 20 exhibition spaces, FRAME intends to offer visitors and exhibitors an intimate experience that favors quality over quantity. As Art Week in Basel can sometimes be overwhelming between all the fairs and exhibitions to visit, FRAME has decided to keep the fair running for 10 days to allow everyone to come in their own time without rushing. Opening hours are from 10:30–20:00 on opening Sunday, 10:00–20:00 from Monday to Friday, and 11:00–20:00 on the final Saturday and Sunday. Monday and Tuesday, June 17 and 18, are open by appointment only. GZ Basel 2019 June 13–16 GZ Basel 2019 is the 5th edition of a satellite art show for artists of all nationalities and using any media—installations, mixed media, painting, performances, photography, prints, sculptures, and video. This fair will be held near the Messe Basel at Schönaustrasse 10. Here, the works can be shown in a way that makes the quality of the works and the displays a priority. Helmut Federle—19 E. 21st St., Six Large Paintings Until September 15 In more than four decades, Helmut Federle (*1944) has created an oeuvre that balances geometric construction with painterly gesture. Federle started carving out his distinctive position in painting in the 1970s, bringing a post- modern sensibility to a reflection on the abstract painterly tradition in Amer- ican art after the war. Yet unlike some of his colleagues, he did not primarily focus on the juncture in the evolution of Western postwar societies at which abstraction became the ascendant aesthetic. Rather, his interest in abstraction is a genuine fascination, which he pursues by steering a course between gestural painting and rigorous geometric construction. Federle’s paintings in large formats and his drawings attest to his ongoing engagement with geometric forms and how to achieve a state of equilibrium between them on the pictorial surface. Circus Knie Anniversary Tour 2019 June 7–19 The year 2019 is special for the Knie family, because 100 years ago, the brothers Friedrich, Rudolf, Karl, and Eugen Knie made the transition from an open-air circus arena to the tent, which sparked the company as it still exists today. The sixth, seventh, and now eighth generation of Knie family members give everything in front of and behind the scenes to combine traditional values with state-of-the-art technology and to thrill audiences throughout Switzerland. The idea behind this run is to promote good health, cama- raderie between coworkers by building team spirit, motivation of team members, and a positive company image. Above all, whether running, walking, or Nordic walking, the goal is to have fun. The course is approximately 6 km and will start at St. Jakob, cross through Münchensteinerpark, over the Birs river on a wooden bridge, through a forested and meadow area, and back to the finish line in St. Jakob. The event takes place on a Friday evening and participation is possible with as little as one person per team. The basic Runner Package costs CHF 44 and includes participation and bib number, individual and professional time keeping, certificate, medal, and after-run party, as well as fruit and drinks at arrival. You can also register for a Runner Package + Pasta for CHF 59, which additionally includes catering (salad, pasta, dessert, and drinks); to participate, register online on their website until June 14. 34 Basel Life Magazine / www.basellife.com Montreux Jazz Festival—Sting, Elton John, Janet Jackson, Bobby McFerrin June 28 – July 13 Since 1967, the Montreux Jazz Festival in canton Vaud has become a “must” for music fans in Switzerland and around the world, each year offering an impressive lineup of acts from many different musical styles. There will be hundreds of paid and free concerts in numerous venues, including concert halls, outdoor stages, boats, trains, two palaces, a hotel, a castle, and many parks. While the majority of the concerts will be in July, there are a few noteworthy concerts already in June, including Sting on June 28, Elton John on June 29, and Janet Jackson and Bobby McFerrin on June 30. Montreux is located about 2.5 hours from Basel; it is best to go by train as parking is limited. Special train discounts apply for the festival, and the train station is only a few minutes’ walk from the festival sites. While fans are happy that the band has been back now for over 10 years, that they regularly release new music, and that members Basel Tattoo July 12–20 who are now established men are still on stage, the former quintet has meanwhile shrunk to a trio with lead singer Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, and Concerts on the Rhein July 29 – August 17 Howard Donald. Although Robbie Williams and Jason Orange were initially part of the reunification, they have since followed their own paths again.
