ENRICHMENT GUIDELINES AND APPLICATION ROBIN E. & WILLIE HUTCH SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 15TH, 2013

GUIDELINES PURPOSE: The Robin E. & Willie Hutch Scholarship Fund assists juniors at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts to attend a summer intensive program. Priority will be given to students who demonstrate how their attendance would possibly parlay into receipt of a larger college scholarship resulting from exposure and experience.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP: The $500.00 Willie Hutch Scholarship is named in memory of Booker T. Washington High School alum Willie Hutchison, BTW ’63 (December 6, 1944 – September 19, 2005). The scholarship may be used for juniors to attend a summer intensive program that furthers their musical endeavors. Willie Hutch was an American , songwriter, composer and producer. He was both a performer and songwriter/producer for on the label in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Before that he worked as a producer for acts such as .

He wrote the hit song “I’ll Be There” that was re-recorded by over 20 artists. Hutch also recorded several albums for Motown and wrote for the era’s top artists such as and Sammy Davis, Jr. He had over 20 R & B hits, two Grammy nominations, numerous BMI and ASCAP awards as well as Platinum and Gold records.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The Robin E. & Willie Hutch Scholarship will be awarded to a Booker T. Washington junior. Qualified candidates will possess a GPA of 80 or above, a complete application (an application that is incomplete will not be considered), a recommendation from a cluster teacher and an academic teacher, a DVD/CD presentation of skills, and will demonstrate financial need. Candidates are also required to research Willie Hutchison’s legacy and reference his contribution to the arts in an essay about career and personal goals, and reason(s) for applying for the Willie Hutch Scholarship.

SELECTION AND AWARD PROCESS:  Applications are available in The Advisory Board office. Applicants must also complete the Master Applicant Profile Statement (MAPS) each academic year.  Students must complete the application process and submit the application and supporting items to the Counselor’s office.  The Enrichment Committee of The Advisory Board will select the recipient. Members of the family of Willie Hutch will be invited to serve on the selection committee. Additional members of the community who knew Willie Hutch or who have special expertise in music may be invited to serve on the selection committee as well.  One scholarship will be awarded each school year.  The recipient will be required to send a thank you note and provide a report to both The Advisory Board and the Willie Hutch Family on how the scholarship funds were used.

APPLICATION Follow the steps below to apply for the Robin E. & Willie Hutch Scholarship  Complete the information at the bottom of this application form and, if not already completed, the MAPS form  Submit a DVD/CD demonstrating your musical talent  Illustrate financial need as verified by qualification for the free or reduced lunch program  Include a copy of your high school transcript  Include one recommendation letter from a cluster teacher  Include one recommendation letter from an academic teacher  On a separate page in 300 words or less answer one or both questions below depicting your career goals, personal goals, and reason(s) for applying for the Robin E. & Willie Hutch Scholarship  Combine all of the above and return to Advisory Board drop box in the Counselor’s office by the deadline. Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered.
