PREFACE

Hello youth of the Rocky Mountain Conference! We’re writing near the end of December, 2020... at the tail end of what has been a unique year for everyone and a difficult, stressful, trying, and scary year for many. We missed you all a lot this year as we cancelled youth events and summer camp to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and keep our communities safe. During the year of cancelled events, we undertook a special project for you! This devotional series is a weekly connection for you to read and follow on your own, with your family, Pathfinder group, church group, or even a group of your close friends. Over the course of the 52 weeks in 2021, we’ll explore what it means to live out our God-given purpose. As you follow along each week, we hope that you’ll find inspira- tion to connect your story to the greatest story of Jesus and by doing so will find new ways to go from ordinary toFully Alive.

Before we dive in, we’d like to acknowledge and shout out the people who helped make this devotional series a reality: Our summer camp 2020 team, specifically John Kent and Joselena Madrigal who lead the initial charge in creating the devotional plan, Eddie Hall who crafted the design, and Vanessa Alarcon who translated the devotional into Spanish.

We pray that 2021 is a year full of joy and meaningful experiences for you. We also hope that this devotional finds a meaningful place in your jour- ney with Jesus. In the midst of life’s ups and downs, we are confident that through God’s power, we are able to Live Greater each and every day.

When viewed through a Christian worldview, we understand that our bodies are a gift from God. Living a healthy life is a part of living a greater story for ourselves and for God. In 1 Corinthians, the author Paul compares our bodies to a temple where the Holy Spirit (God) lives. Not only does living a healthy life lead us to happiness, it also honors our creator God.

What does it mean to honor God with your body? Simply, take care of it! When done every day, a few simple things will greatly impact your physical health: drink water, eat healthy foods, eat fats and sweets in moderation, avoid harmful substances, get enough sleep, and stay active. When you come to care about yourself the way that God does, you’ll want to maintain your body and keep it safe. That is why we must first lay the foundation of loving and caring for ourselves before applying the practical steps like healthy eating and exercise. As mentioned earlier, our bodies are temples for the Holy Spirit. A temple is a place of worship, so we were made to worship. It is who we are. We worship God when we take care of ourselves spiritually, mentally, and physically!
