Theater is a deeply paradoxical art form: Seen at once as socially constitutive and promoting mass conformity, it is also criticized as denaturalizing, decentering, etiolating, queering, feminizing. -

CONCLUSION 91 BIBLIOGRAPHY 99 iii CHAPTER I HAWTHORNE'S DEVELOPMENT AS A WRITER Early in his life Nathaniel Hawthorne decided that he would become a writer. In a letter to his mother when he was seventeen years old, he weighed the possibilities of entering other professions against his inclinations and concluded by asking her what she thought of his becoming a writer. He demonstrated an awareness of some of the disappointments a writer must face by stating that authors are always "poor devils." This realistic attitude was to help him endure the obscurity and lack of reward during the early years of his career. As in many of his letters, he concluded this letter to his mother with a literary reference to describe how he felt about making a decision that would determine how he was to spend his life.1 It was an important decision for him to make, but consciously or unintentionally, he had been pre- paring for such a decision for several years. The build-up to his writing was reading. Although there were no writers on either side of Hawthorne's family, there was a strong appreciation for literature. -

Steven Piott CLARION UNIVERSITY THE RIGHT OF THE CARTOONIST: SAMUEL PENNYPACKER AND FREEDOM OF THE PRESS Those who have studied the role of the press during the Progressive 1Era have devoted considerable attention to the importance of muckraking. Having only recently emerged from the depression of the 1890s, and more aware than ever before of the impact of economic change on their lives and interested in understanding the workings of the political economy more clearly, the reading public was receptive to a new style of journalism. Playing on a public thirst for sensationalism, and tapping the emerging enthusiasm for issue-focused politics, journal- ists relied on exposes. Works like Lincoln Steffens' Shame of the Cities, Ida Tarbell's History of Standard Oil, and Upton Sinclair's The Jungle began as serialized articles in newspapers and magazines and shocked readers with accounts of political corruption, corporate malfeasance, the sale of adulterated meat and inhuman working conditions. These journalists were supported by the often overlooked editorial cartoonists. Cartoons like Frederick Burr Opper's series on the trusts, Homer Davenport's depictions of Mark Hanna, or the creative contributions of countless other cartoonists working the beat of municipal politics, grabbed the readers attention in much the same way.' Working together muckrakers educated the American people about the widespread cor- ruption and exploitation that seemed to intensify with the growth of industrial capitalism. Collectively they described the moral and ethical degeneration of a society where individuals seemed to conspire against the commonweal, violating laws and jeopardizing free institutions. Backing their bold accusations and biting satire with factual details, reporters and cartoonists created a unique journalistic moment that was both a response to a spirited public indignation and a means of focusing that anger and turning it into citizen activism. -

Wishing to Be Interviewed in Henry James’s The Reverberator By Matthew Rubery, University of Leeds When Henry James wrote about the age of “newspaperism” he was really writing about the “age of interviewing” (CN 86). While newspapers had existed for over two centuries, the interview was a controversial invention of the late-nineteenth-century press that dramatically influenced the way audiences thought about private life. The public’s willingness to share their most intimate experiences with journalists through this conversational form was even more alarming to James than the invasion of pri- vacy by newspapers. Matthias Pardon of The Bostonians (1885–86) has been taken to embody the invasive style of American journalism described in James’s notebooks: “There must, indispensably, be a type of newspaper man—the man whose ideal is the energetic reporter. I should like to bafouer the vulgarity and hideousness of this—the impudent invasion of privacy—the extinction of all concept of privacy, etc.” (CN 19). The notebooks characterize the loss of privacy in a way that attributes to the over- zealous reporter sole responsibility for any revelations to come in the novel. Pardon begins his career in just such a fashion by collecting potentially scandalous names from hotel registers, although he makes his reputation through nothing more intrusive than speaking with hotel guests on behalf of The Boston Evening Transcript: [He] was the most brilliant young interviewer on the Boston press. He was particularly successful in drawing out the ladies; he had condensed into shorthand many of the most celebrated women of his time—some of these daughters of fame were very voluminous—and he was supposed to have a remarkably insinuating way of waiting upon prime donne and actresses the morning after their arrival, or sometimes the very evening, while their luggage was being brought up. -

Introduction Students of William James have long commented on how critical periods of his life compelled crucial developments in his philosophical thought. Ralph Barton Perry was the first to capitalize upon this recognition, with his examination of how James’s depression resulted in a very practical and highly personalized belief in the necessity of action as the only viable response to the Darwinian “process of the universe” (Perry 1: 322). Charlene Seigfried posits that, in addition to this seminal event, James likely faced two other crises. In 1895, he turned from psychological studies to specifically philosophical issues (William James’s Radical Reconstruction 12). In 1908-1909, these endeavors forced him to “give up ‘intellectualistic logic’” entirely and depend on a reconstructed “rational strand” in order to answer the old question (first posed in The Principles of Psychology) of how many consciousnesses can be at the same time one consciousness (13). Such insights have enriched and enlivened James studies, but the generalized conclusion they indicate—that James’s philosophy was an intensely lived but largely successful experience—deserves reevaluation. The first part of this judgment is accurate; the second is far less so. James’s first crisis was without doubt a lonely experience precipitated by questions of his responsibility to society and his place among others’ lives (Perry 1: 322). -
