2018-19 NBA Season Already a Wild One By: Isaac Tomoletz On Tuesday, October 16, 2018, the NBA regular season officially started. Before the season started, there were some big moves by players and teams in this past offseason. Starting with the back-to-back Champions, the Golden State Warriors added a big time player to their already stacked team, Demarcus Cousins, who missed the majority of the season with a torn achilles. Another big shocking move was made by two teams, the Toronto Raptors traded star player Demar Derozan for San Antonio Spurs’ Kawhi Leonard. There were also players such as Jimmy Butler of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who wasn’t happy with his current relationship with his team. So many rumors spread about where he’s going. All of these plus other deals and trades such as Carmelo Anthony signing to the Houston Rockets, one of the biggest deals over the summer was former Cavs forward LeBron James signing to the Los Angeles Lakers have fans wondering about the coming season. All of these changes in teams were months ago, but the NBA season is now underway and we have already seen some interesting things. One of the big talks lately has been about the game played on this past Saturday between the Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Lakers. During the fourth quarter between the two, a foul occured on Brandon Ingram, a player on the Lakers. After the foul, Ingram pushed Rockets guard, James Harden, which resulted in him getting a technical foul. As the situation was being handled, Rajon Rondo of the Lakers and Chris Paul of the Rockets started arguing and then all hell broke loose in the Staples Center in Los Angeles when Rondo threw a punch at Chris Paul and then Ingram hopped in and threw a punch as well. The scene was hectic and it resulted in Ingram getting a 4 game suspension. Rondo received a 3 game suspension and for Chris Paul, he got a two game suspension. Rondo threw the first blow after Paul appeared to put his finger in Rondo’s eye. Rondo was also accused of spitting on Paul and that’s what led to Paul using his finger. Now that we are a few games into the season and we’ve already seen a fight break out, let’s check out the standings for the NBA. Only a few games in and we’ve seen teams struggle and teams start out hot. For the Eastern Conference, the Raptors have started off 5-0 as the Bucks and Pistons are behind at 4-0 and 3-0. For the Western Conference, the Nuggets are 4-0 as the Pelicans are behind at 3-0 with the Warriors in third place at 4-1. Lebron and the Lakers are in 13th place at 1-3 and a team that surprisingly is in last place right now are the Oklahoma City Thunder at 0-3. .

This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal.

After this season's playoﬀ run, you can add leader to the list. Last night Jimmy Butler led the Miami Heat to the franchise's 6th NBA Finals appearance. The Heat were counted out from the beginning. They were underdogs from the start. It goes hand and hand with Jimmy Butler’s upbringing. Being an underdog. The origin story of Jimmy Butler is the making of a movie. Butler was born in Tomball, Texas, a suburb of Houston. At a young age, he was abandoned by his father leaving him with just his mother. At age 13, his mother kicked him out of the house with her last words being, “I don’t like the look of you. You gotta go.” Throughout middle school and most of high school, Jimmy bounced around friends' couches. It wasn’t until his senior year of high school when the mother of one of his friends took him in and made him a part of the family. Basketball wasn’t always Jimmy’s sport. Bayesian Nonparametric Estimation for Point Processes with Spatial Homogeneity: A Spatial Analysis of NBA Shot Locations Fan Yin Microsoft Jieying Jiao Department of Statistics, University of Connecticut Guanyu Hu Department of Statistics, University of Missouri and Jun Yan Department of Statistics, University of Connecticut November 24, 2020 Abstract Basketball shot location data provide valuable summary information regarding players to coaches, sports analysts, fans, statisticians, as well as players themselves. Represented by spatial points, such data are naturally analyzed with spatial point process models. We present a novel nonparametric Bayesian method for learning the underlying intensity surface built upon a combination of Dirichlet process and Markov random field. Our method has the advantage of effectively encouraging local spatial homogeneity when estimating a globally heterogeneous intensity surface. Posterior inferences are performed with an efficient Markov arXiv:2011.11178v1 [stat.ME] 23 Nov 2020 chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm. Simulation studies show that the inferences are accurate and that the method is superior compared to the competing methods.
