Genesis, or Bereeshit, includes the so-called Table of Nations. In this section we read that the Canaanites descended from Canaan, the son of Ham, who was the son of Noah. Genesis 10:15–19 (KJV) And Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn and Heth. And the Jebusite and the Amorite and the Girgasite, and the Hivite and the Arkite and the Sinite, and the Arvadite and the Zemarite and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad. And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar unto Gaza, as thou goest unto Sodom and Gomorah, and Admah and Zeboim even unto Lasha. Parashah Noah As a territory Canaan is an ancient term for the region of Israel, the Palestinian territories (the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and the western parts of Jordan and Syria). The term "Canaan land" is also used as a metaphor for any land of promise or spiritual state of liberation from oppression. Moses' journey from Egypt to the promised land of Canaan thus symbolizes a people's journey from oppression to freedom, from sin to grace. 1 Canaanites are mentioned in the Bible as well as in Mesopotamian and Ancient Egyptian texts. According to the Bible, the land of Canaan was the "promised land" which God gave to Abraham and his descendants. The Canaanites themselves were the fierce enemies of the Israelites, who practiced a decadent and idolatrous religion. The religion of the Canaanites was an agricultural religion, with pronounced fertility motifs. Their main gods were called the Baalim (Lords), and their consorts the Baalot (female gods), or Asherah (a singular female god). The god of the city of Shechem, a city the Israelites had absorbed peacefully under Joshua, was called Baal-brith (Lord of the covenant). Canaanite religion was polytheistic, and in some cases monolatristic. Monolatrism is derived from the Greek words monos which means single, and latreia which means worship. What it means is the recognition of the existence of many gods, but with the consistent worship of only one deity. 1 http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Canaan 5 It’s a different concept than that of monotheism, which is the belief in the existence of only one God. The Baalim and the Baalot of the Canaanites were gods and goddesses of the Earth. They were believed to be the ones who revitalize the forces of nature upon which agriculture depends. 2 All this is at odds with our own faith of course, because the Jewish bible clearly states: Exodus 20:1-3 And God spake all these words, saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Parashah Yitro Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD Parashah Vaethanan 1 Samuel 2:2 There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God. Ephesians 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (Yeshua) existence of only one God. The Baalim and the Baalot of the Canaanites where gods and goddesses of the Earth. They were believed to be the revitalizes of the forces of nature upon which agriculture depended. 3 2 http://history-world.org/canaanite_culture_and_religion.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canaanite_religion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monolatrism 3 http://history-world.org/canaanite_culture_and_religion.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canaanite_religion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monolatrism 6 All this goes against our own faith of course because it says clear in the Jewish bible: Exodus 20:1-3 (KJV) And God spake all these words, saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Parashah Yitro Deuteronomy 6:4 (KJV) Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD Parashah Vaethanan 1 Samuel 2:2 (KJV) There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God. Ephesians 4:6 (KJV) One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (Yeshua) Who is Asherah? The Canaanite mother of all the gods representing life and the sea is Asherah. Other variations and spellings of this name: Athirat, Asherdu, Ashertu, Ashratum or Athirat yammi (meaning 'Athirat of the Sea'). She was the main goddess of the coastal cities of Sidon and Tyre. Asherah the sensual goddess was seen by the Canaanites and certain other pagan people groups as the wife or consort of the Sumerian god Anu or Ugaritic god El, the oldest deities of their pantheons. In the book of Jeremiah Asherah is also referred to as the Queen of Heaven". Jeremiah 7:18 and Jeremiah 44:17–19, 25. 4 Asherah was worshipped with prostitution. The sacred sea (or lake) upon which the Ugaritic or Canaanite Asherah goddess stood was known as Yam Kinneret and is now called Lake Galilee. Asherah is also considered to be the consort of Elkunirsa (The Hittite version of El) and mother of either 77 or 88 divine sons. By the way these numbers are used 4 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asherah http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Asherah 7 often within witchcraft and considered occult numbers. Her sons with El, described as a pride of lions, are also called the Waves, Death and Rabbim (many) 5 Asherah was also worshiped as the goddess of love and war and was sometimes linked with Anath, another Canaanite goddess. Worship of Asherah was noted for its sensuality and involved ritual prostitution. The priests and priestesses of Asherah also practiced divination and fortune- telling. 6 Asherah was also considered to be the Great Queen of Heaven and Earth. Other names for Queen of Heaven are Isis (Egypt), Astarte/ Ishtar (Hebrew, Ugaritic, Akkadian, Etruscan) and Inanna (Sumeria, Sumer, the region of city-states in ancient Mesopotamia, Iraq). The title Queen of Heaven is used by Catholics for Mary. 7 Asherah poles, groves, trees, hangings and prostitution An Asherah pole was a 'sacred tree' or pole that stood near Canaanite religious locations to honor Asherah. The Jewish Bible indicates that the poles were made of wood. 8 In the King James Version of the Bible Asherah or Asherim (plural) is translated as groves. The JPS (Jewish Publication Society) keeps it's Hebrew names. But what is a grove anyway? A grove is a small group of trees on an island or possibly in a woodland. A group of trees with minimal or no undergrowth, such as a sequoia small orchard planted for the cultivation of fruits or nuts. Other words for groups of trees include woodland, copse, woodlot, thicket or spinney. The primary meaning of "grove" is simply a group of trees that grow close together, generally without many bushes or other plants underneath. A sacred grove is a grove of trees of special religious importance to a particular culture. 9 Asherah was worshipped in groves and thus these became sacred trees, sacred groves for religious worship which included prostitution. 5 http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Asherah 6 http://www.gotquestions.org/who-Asherah.html 7 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_of_heaven_%28Antiquity%29 http://www.orderwhitemoon.org/goddess/Asherah2.html http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Asherah 8 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asherah_pole 9 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_grove http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_grove#ixzz1zTyh1bgq http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grove_%28nature%29 8 Deuteronomy 16:21-22 (KJV) Thou shalt not plant thee a grove of any trees near unto the altar of the LORD thy God, which thou shalt make thee.

religions Article The Participation of God and the Torah in Early Kabbalah Adam Afterman 1,* and Ayal Hayut‑man 2 1 Department of Jewish Philosophy and Talmud, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv 6997801, Israel 2 School of Jewish Studies and Archaeology, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv 6997801, Israel; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: All Abrahamic religions have developed hypostatic and semi‑divine perceptions of scrip‑ ture. This article presents an integrated picture of a rich tradition developed in early kabbalah (twelfth–thirteenth century) that viewed the Torah as participating and identifying with the God‑ head. Such presentation could serve scholars of religion as a valuable tool for future comparisons between the various perceptions of scripture and divine revelation. The participation of God and Torah can be divided into several axes: the identification of Torah with the Sefirot, the divine grada‑ tions or emanations according to kabbalah; Torah as the name of God; Torah as the icon and body of God; and the commandments as the substance of the Godhead. The article concludes by examining the mystical implications of this participation, particularly the notion of interpretation as eros in its broad sense, both as the “penetration” of a female Torah and as taking part in the creation of the world and of God, and the notion of unification with Torah and, through it, with the Godhead. Keywords: Kabbalah; Godhead; Torah; scripture; Jewish mysticism; participation in the Godhead 1. Introduction Citation: Afterman, Adam, and Ayal The centrality of the Word of God, as consolidated in scripture, is a central theme in Hayut‑man.

  • Hollie L. Moody
Hollie L. Moody Prophecies and Teachings Vision of China's Revival and Battle - Jan. 25th, 2000; Tuesday This is a vision I had almost two years ago. I had just gotten a computer for a Christmas present from my husband, and hadn't been on-long much more than a month. Many people have been writing to me asking me to re-send them this vision. May the Lord use it for His glory. I have had a burden for the nation of China, which has grown since the beginning of this year. As I was praying for this nation this morning, this is what I saw in my mind: I was out way above the earth, in the heavens, looking down upon the earth. My attention was drawn to a very dark spot on the earth. The Lord was with me. "What is that dark spot?" I asked the Lord. "That is the nation of China," the Lord replied. "Come and see." The Lord and I seemed to draw closer to this dark spot on the earth that the Lord had told me was China. I saw as if it were prison bars completely surrounding the entire nation. The nation was in almost total darkness, and even the small, faint light that there was was dim and gloomy looking. There were people from within China pressed up against the prison bars surrounding their country. They were very thin, were in rags, their clothes tattered and filthy. They appeared as if they had been physically beaten. They had blindfolds over their eyes.

Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai, the author of the "Zohar" lived, studied and worked in the the 2nd Century, C.E., studying the deepest Kabbalistic secrets with his disciples in a cave near Tzfat called "Me'arat Ha'idra". It was there that they experienced the lofty spiritual and Heavenly revelations described in the Zohar. The entire Tzfat area is dotted with many graves of ancient Jewish sages and mystics, dating from the First Temple Era through the Middle Ages. These holy sites bear witness to the work and activities of Prophets and early Talmudic sages, who were also well-known mystics in their own right. They were attracted by the region's special energy and atmosphere, and saw it as the ideal location for connecting with the inspiration and insights of Kabbalah.

Yitro 5779 Rabbi Ariel Rackovsky Congregation Shaare Tefilla This week, Jessica had Monday off and she brought Shevy to my office for a visit. Just before they left, I was seized by a brilliant idea for a posed photo. I went to my bookshelf and took out my copy of the classic Chassidic work Kedushas Levi, the Torah commentary of Rav Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev. I put it in Shevy’s tiny hands while she lay in the stroller; she seemed excited to be holding it, and I took a picture, which I labelled “Drove the Shevy to the Levi…” Yes, I hear many of you of a certain age groaning; I know that this is a uniquely Jewish and highly specific version of a literal Dad joke. Please understand, though, that in an effort not to cause Eli Lebowicz, our visiting comedian, any performance anxiety this evening, I’m not using my really good material... After this photographic triumph, I began to experience a guilty conscience. How could I use a sefer for a sight gag? So I opened the Kedushas Levi to this week’s Parsha. Providentially, Rav Levi Yitzchak develops an idea in an essay that articulates an issue I’ve been thinking about for quite some time. This week, we read the Torah’s account of God’s revelation at Mt. Sinai, an account that is repeated later on in the book of Devarim. There are a number of differences between these two accounts, but perhaps the best 1 © 2019 Rabbi Ariel Rackovsky known is found in the Torah’s commandment to observe Shabbos.

  • The 'Jezebel Spirit ': a Scholarly Inquiry
Original Research The ‘Jezebel spiriT’: A scholArly inquiry Authors: ABSTRACT Trudie Stark1 Queen Jezebel is rightly recognised as one of the powerful women in the Old Testament. In the Hans J.M. van Deventer1 biblical text she is introduced as a ‘foreign’ queen and wife to Ahab, the 8th century king of the northern kingdom, Israel. This article examines some of the interpretations of this character in Affiliations: the church over the centuries. The focus falls on the latest development in this regard whereby, 1Faculty of Humanities, in some circles, the biblical character is linked to the existence of a ‘Jezebel spirit’ within the North-West University contemporary church. On the basis of a narratological reading of the Jezebel texts it is indicated (Vaal Triangle Campus), that such an interpretation is unfounded and fails to take cognisance of developments in biblical South Africa interpretation related to literary understandings of the text. Correspondence to: Hans van Deventer INTRODUCTION e-mail: Jezebel is doubtless the most infamous of all the female figures in the Hebrew Bible. She is seen as the hans.vandeventer@nwu. embodiment of feminine evil. References by evangelical preachers to Jezebel as a ‘spirit’ create an enemy ac.za ‘outside’ the individual rather than confronting personal sin. Frangipane (1994:119) refers to Jezebel as a stronghold of immense proportions, a way of thinking that exists unchecked in most churches. Postal address: Some references identify Jezebel as the source of obsessive sensuality, unbridled witchcraft, hatred of PO Box 1174, Vanderbijl male authority and false teachings in the church and society at large.
