Calne is an ancient municipal borough, and the head of a Union, Petty Sessional Division and County Court District, possesses a station on the Great Western Railway, and is six miles from Chippenham and eight from Devizes. It is in the Chippenham Division of Wilts and Diocese of Salisbury. The register of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin dates from 1527. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £633, with residence, in gift of the Bishop of Salisbury. There are Wesleyan, Baptist, Strict Baptist and Primitive Methodist Chapels, and a free Church and Salvation Army Barracks, and the Brethren have a meeting room. Calne is noted for its Wiltshire con, for the curing of which Messrs. C. & T. Harris (Calne) Ltd. have two large establishments. There are a Town Hall, a Free Public Library and a public recreation ground. The last named was given to the inhabitants of the town for ever by the late Mt T. Harris, and its management is invested in the Corporation. There are two registered clubs – Liberal Club, Wood Street; and Conservative Club, Church Street; also a Y.M.C.A. in Wood Street, and a Ladies Conservative Club in The Green. The Marquis of Lansdowne (who is Lord of the Manor), Lord Islington and Lord Crewe are the principle landowners. Petty Sessions are held at the Town Hall fortnightly on Fridays. Bus services to Bath, Chippenham, Devizes, Marlborough and Melksham. Area, 356 acres; rateable value, £16,487; population in 1921, 3,640.
