The Kansas Comet's Roommate The Kansas Comet’s Roommate Field Trip/Video Conference Program “Field Trip/Video Conference” Experience Outline: 10 minutes – Welcome/Mission/Vision/Values 30 minutes – Discussion/Videos on Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo 10 minutes – Question and Answers Instructions: Please use the following lesson to help prepare your students for a more meaningful and interactive educational experience. 1 Pro Football Hall of Fame Youth/Education The Kansas Comet’s Roommate Subject: Language Arts, History, Technology, Character Education Lesson Title: The Kansas Comet’s Roommate Goals/Objectives: • Students will: o Create, critique and discuss print and non-print texts. o Conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions and by posing problems. They gather, evaluate and synthesize data from a variety of sources (e.g., print and non-print displays and artifacts) to communicate their discoveries. o Use a variety of technological and informational resources (e.g., video, displays, databases) to gather and synthesize information and to create and communicate knowledge. o Develop an understanding of and respect for diversity in language use, patterns and dialects across cultures, ethnic groups, geographic regions and social roles. o Use spoken, written and visual language to accomplish their own purpose (e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion and exchange of information). o Identify the basis for the respect they feel for someone of a different race or culture and provide an opportunity to demonstrate tolerance for people with different beliefs, practices and appearances. Common Core Standards Met: • Language Art: o Reading Informational Text (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.[grade level].1-3, 5-9) o Reading Foundational Skills (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.[grade level].4) o Writing (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.[grade level].1-9) o Speaking and Listening (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.[grade level].1-2,5) o Language (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.[grade level].1-3) National Standards Met: • US History 5th-12th Grade: Era 9: Postwar United States (1945 to early 1970s); Era 10: Contemporary United States (1968-Present) • Technology: 1-Empowered Learner; 2-Digital Citizenship; 3-Knowledge Constructor • Family and Consumer Sciences: 7.0-Family and Human Services; 12.0-Human Development; 13.0-Interpersonal Relationships. 2 Pro Football Hall of Fame Youth/Education The Kansas Comet’s Roommate Methods/Procedures: Prior to Program • Students will read Brian’s Song in the paperback version as a class and discuss the two protagonists (Gale Sayers, Brian Piccolo) in detail and their relationship. Students should take notes of the discussion. • If reading the book cannot be accomplished, have the students use various sources to research information about the movie, Gale Sayers, and Brian Piccolo from sources such as: o ProFootballHOF.com o http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Piccolo_Brian.html o http://www.bearshistory.com/lore/brianpiccolo.aspx o https://www.brianpiccolofund.org/ • Students will view the Emmy winning movie Brian’s Song starring James Caan and Billy Dee Williams. Teachers should highlight for students the specific scene where Gale is called into Coach Halas’ office and asked if he can handle rooming with Brian and all the public outrage that will result from the first black/white rooming arrangements in the NFL. This scene is approximately thirty (30) minutes into the film. Students should take notes about this movie. • Using the Venn diagram (page 5), students should compare similarities and differences between Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo. This can be done individually or as a class. If as a class, place these in the front of the class for the entire class to view. • Students should compile a list of questions to be asked during the program. During the Program • Students will: o Learn about the Mission/Vision/Values of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. o Discuss the story of Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo. o Examine similarities and differences between the two during their careers with the Chicago Bears. o Examine the social climate of the NFL during those tumultuous times (1950s, 1960s and 1970s). o Examine how character qualities contributed to their relationship and in dealing with the adversity they faced on and off the field. o Examine how the same characteristics of Gale and Brian or any Hall of Famer can be applied to everyday life to help students achieve their fullest potential. • Students will complete the “Kansas Comet’s Roommate” worksheet provided (pages 6-7). Students can use this information during their post-program activity. 3 Pro Football Hall of Fame Youth/Education The Kansas Comet’s Roommate After the Program • Students will complete Shattering Stereotypes (page 8) and discuss their answers with the teacher in class. • Using the information gathered during the pre-program activities and from the interaction with the Hall of Fame, students will complete a report on Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers. Students may choose to write this about anything from the social implications involved with being the first white-black roommates to the character traits displayed by Brian and Gale. This information can then be presented to the class (PowerPoint, Prezi, show board, student wiki, etc). Post this in the front of the class for everyone to see. Teachers can have students come up with their own definition or use a definition from a dictionary. Using this definition, each student should list five examples of a stereotype: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. As a class, discuss the different stereotypes that students have listed. Now, each student should identify at least one person for each stereotype they listed who doesn’t fit the stereotype and explain why. It can be someone they know or someone famous.     Gridiron Glory: Footballs Greatest Legends and Moments is the most extensive and comprehensive exhibit featuring America’smost popular sport ever to tour. Many of the objects included in the exhibition have never been outside the walls of their home, the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The artifacts are representative of the great moments, great players and coaches and milestone moments of the sport over the last 100-plus years. Below is a partial list of the rare and historically significant artifacts that will be presented in Gridiron Glory: Footballs Greatest Legends and Moments. The Pioneers This section looks at the early days of the sport when a very unorganized, rough and tumble game was played in empty lots and other makeshift venues. It captures the moment when the NFL was born, when the rules of the game were created anew on every field and when one player of staggering ability, Red Grange, “barnstormed” across America to drum up fan support for a sport in its infancy. Artifacts featured include: 1892 Allegany Athletic Association accounting ledger – Pro Football’sBirth Certificate This accounting ledger sheet from the 1892 Allegheny Athletic Association documents football’s first case of professionalism. “Pro Football’sBirth Certificate” has never before been displayed outside the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Jim Thorpe’sCanton bulldogs Sideline Blanket In 1915 the Canton Bulldogs signed Jim Thorpe to a $250 per game contract. Thorpe, the first big-name athlete to play pro football, was an exceptional talent and major gate attraction. His outstanding talent enabled Canton to lay claim to unofficial world championships in 1916, 1917 and 1919.

    THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 15, No. 1 (1993) Bronx, Blacks, and the NFL by Victor Mastro and John Hogrogian The Bronx is one of the five boroughs which make up New York City. It is the only borough which is located on the mainland United States, as the other four are on islands in New York Harbor. The Bronx is home for Yankee Stadium and Fordham University. It formerly was home for the uptown campus of New York University, now gone. In the 1920's and 1930's, Fordham and NYU were football powers that sent several players into the pros. Staunchly middle-class in character, the Bronx now is also cursed with a plague of urban blight in its southern neighborhoods. For the past sixty years, the Bronx has been the setting for many developments in the racial integration of the National Football League, Its fields, schools, and people have all played a role in the progress of the NFL away from its segregated past and into the diverse world of the 1990's. I The New York Brown Bombers Black players were a small but significant presence in the NFL during the 1920's. Players like Fritz Pollard, Duke Slater, and Inky Williams were stars in the league's first decade. By 1933, however, the number of black players in the NFL dwindled to two, halfback Joe Lillard of the Chicago Cardinals and tackle Ray Kemp of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
