in association with Aber Cottage Beddgelert | Gwynedd | LL55 4YF Aber Cottage Softly surrounded by trees and with the Aberglaslyn River flowing gently through the garden, Aber Cottage is a place of great natural beauty and tranquillity. The cottage began life in the mid eighteenth century, and its character and location have inspired artists to pick up their brushes. A painting of the cottage in eighteen ninety is exhibited in the National Library of Wales. Sadly, the cottage fell into ruin, but was rescued in the nineteen eighties by a local businessman who won an award for the superb restoration. He renovated and extended, retaining the original chimney wall in the kitchen and bedroom. Today it is a charming home where you can enjoy the comforts of the modern age in a unique setting. It was only by chance that the present owners saw a photograph and sale details of the property in a magazine, and immediately fell in love with it. They have loved and enjoyed Aber Cottage for over twenty years and say it is where the cares of the world are washed away and energy revived. There are enchanting views to the river from every room, and it provides a picturesque backdrop to meals in the conservatory or on the patio. The surroundings tempt summer al fresco dining, but the kitchen diner can easily seat eight people and is equipped for the keen cook. The cottage has a calm and pleasing atmosphere. It encourages you to settle in the lounge to read and relax, and the multi fuel stove creates a warming glow on a chilly winters’ day.

  • Welsh Highland Railway Items at Gwynedd Archives
WELSH HIGHLAND RAILWAY ITEMS AT GWYNEDD ARCHIVES Page last updated 9 July 2012 This listing is offered as an indication to researchers into Welsh Highland history of what they may find in the Gwynedd Archives, principally at Caernarfon Record Office, Victoria Dock, Caernarfon. This list takes, as its start point, their catalogue and card indexes where an item appears to relate to the Welsh Highland Railway and its predecessors. The compiler has examined a number of the items and has provided notes of what those items contain – this does not purport to be a full listing of every document, but it may be helpful in guiding other researchers to items which may be of interest to them. In each case, the first line in bold is as given in Gwynedd Archives’ (hard copy) catalogue, in the following order: Reference | Date(s) (usually simply the first and last item in the file/folder) | Description (although sometimes abridged) : Remarks [if any]. The subsequent non-emboldened text is the compiler’s non-exhaustive notes of contents; where there is no such text, the item/file has not been examined - users of this list who do examine such files are invited to submit their notes of contents to enable this listing to become more comprehensive: go to http://www.railchronology.free-online.co.uk/#contact to submit. Note that unless included in quotation marks “ ” such notes should be taken merely as a precis of a document, rather than as a copy of actual text. All references in sections A., B. and C. are held at Caernarfon and are prefixed X (e.g.

  • Preservation Part 2 the Welsh Highland Railway
THE NORTH STAR CHRONICLES – a newsletter primarily for the model railway fraternity Volume 2 no 5, May 2014 Editor: David Cairns e-mail: [email protected] Website for back copies: https://sites.google.com/a/steamtrains.co.za/steam/garden-railways/the- north-star-chronicles Phone: +27 82 653 5642 Editorial This month the theme of ‘Training In Retirement’ is continued with a second article on Preservation, on this occasion featuring the 1’ 11½” Welsh Highland Railway. This line was chosen for a number of reasons: the sheer scale of the project – re-establishing 25 miles of railway line, the main part of which had been closed for some 60 years; the associated legal, financial, physical and indeed social challenges (a small number of opponents of the rebuilding of the line resorted to vandalism); and of course the WHR’s strong South African connections. Training In Retirement Part 4 – Preservation Part 2 The Welsh Highland Railway – a complicated story As is frequently the case with railways in Wales particularly narrow gauge ones, the history of the Welsh Highland Railway is closely associated with slate mining. Another interesting feature of the WHR is how its history is intertwined with that of its neighbour the Festiniog Railway. A third thread is the role of civic authorities in promoting/subsidising the line. 1 Route of the Welsh Highland Railway In 1922 two companies – the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railways (NWNGR) and the Portmadoc, Beddgelert and South Snowdon Railway (PBSSR), successor to the Portmadoc, Croesor and Beddgelert Tram Railway merged to form the Welsh Highland Railway.
