The TEAMWORK, group phase has been completed and the 2018/19 season has reached the Last 16 stage. FAIRNESS While the two group winners, Barça Lassa and Paris Saint-Germain Handball, have qualified directly to the quarter-finals, we have 12 more teams lining up to join the & RESPECT record champions and last year’s third-placed team in the next round. For the first time since the inaugural VELUX EHF FINAL4 in 2010, the competition’s reigning champions did not make it from the group phase after Montpellier lost the chance to qualify in the very last round. Last year the French team won the competition in stunning fashion after qualifying from the Groups C/D, a feat Sporting CP and Orlen Wisla Plock will try to emulate this time around. However, they both face enormously ambitious Hungarian opponents. The Portuguese team takes on the heavyweights from Veszprém, while the Polish side locks horns with MOL-Pick Szeged. 2017 winners, HC Vardar, will play against HC PPD Zagreb while the 2014 trophy winners, SG Flensburg-Handewitt, will meet the familiar faces of HC Meshkov Brest, whom they eliminated in the Last 16 two years ago. Last season’s runners-up, HBC Nantes, have been pitted against Rhein-Neckar Löwen and the 2016 champions PGE Vive Kielce take on HC Motor Zaporozhye, who have yet to pass the Last 16 threshold. All six pairings promise extremely entertaining matches across the continent as we take a step closer to the 10th anniversary of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in the LANXESS arena, Cologne on 1/2 June 2019. On behalf of the EHF and EHF Marketing GmbH, I would like to wish all teams the very Nord Stream 2 is a European project that best of luck on the next step in their journey to the VELUX EHF FINAL4. Only the top fourteen teams have survived the exciting group phase marathon which was played for the first time with 28 teams on the starting grid. And before we set our sights towards the upcoming playoff matches let me just underline that the many thrilling matches between even opponents in the group phase has certainly justified our move to revitalise this stage of the competition. The two clubs who won the Group A and B have also benefitted from another change in the playing system as Paris Saint-Germain Handball and FC Barcelona Lassa qualified directly to the quarter-finals and can now enjoy a welcome break in the busy season, while their future quarter-final opponents will have to overcome the Last 16 hurdles.

Passt einfach immer. Following the festival of international handball January traditionally provides us with; it is time to shine the spotlight on club action once again. From 9 February to 12 March, the five remaining rounds of the group phase will determine which 12 teams will hold on to their dreams of reaching the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne. But before we begin analysing the current state of the four groups, let us take a look back at the recently concluded World Championship in France, which underlined the massive influence Europe’s elite club competition has on the handball world. In total, 133 players from 23 clubs who took part in January will continue their season in this competition. 18 of the 24 nations counted on Champions League experience, including all 14 European participants. 30 players return to the top flight of club handball with a medal around their neck – 15 French champions, two Norwegian silver medallists and 13 Slovenians who captured the bronze against Croatia. It will be fascinating to see how the recently awarded medallists can transfer their success from national team competition to their clubs, equally to witness the response from players who suffered from a disappointing end to their campaign.
