Passt einfach immer. Following the festival of international handball January traditionally provides us with; it is time to shine the spotlight on club action once again. From 9 February to 12 March, the five remaining rounds of the group phase will determine which 12 teams will hold on to their dreams of reaching the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne. But before we begin analysing the current state of the four groups, let us take a look back at the recently concluded World Championship in France, which underlined the massive influence Europe’s elite club competition has on the handball world. In total, 133 players from 23 clubs who took part in January will continue their season in this competition. 18 of the 24 nations counted on Champions League experience, including all 14 European participants. 30 players return to the top flight of club handball with a medal around their neck – 15 French champions, two Norwegian silver medallists and 13 Slovenians who captured the bronze against Croatia. It will be fascinating to see how the recently awarded medallists can transfer their success from national team competition to their clubs, equally to witness the response from players who suffered from a disappointing end to their campaign. Their morale can prove to be a decisive factor for their sides in what is a crucial part of the season. Record champions FC Barcelona Lassa begin 2017 at the peak of Group A, thanks to an impressive win over closest rivals Paris-Saint Germain Handball in the final round before the break, which means direct progression to the quarter-finals for the second year in a row is a distinct possibility. Meanwhile, the battle for top spot in Group B appears to be a four-horse race, with defending champions KS Vive Tauron Kielce leading the chasing pack of MOL-Pick Szeged, HC Vardar and Rhein-Neckar Löwen. At the other end of both Groups A and B, each and every team is still in with a shout of a top-six finish and progression to the Last 16 and nobody should be counted out at this level. The situation in Groups C and D is much clearer as the four teams qualified for the play-offs were confirmed ahead of the 10th and final round. Naturhouse La Rioja and HC Motor Zaporozhye have emerged from the tough six-team groups for the second season in succession and will be joined by French duo HBC Nantes and Montpellier Handball in the two-legged encounters for a place in the knockout stages. We are halfway through the season, but there is still so much to discover in the VELUX EHF Champions League. Can Kielce break the curse of the defending champions not returning to Cologne? After falling short at the quarter-final stage three seasons on the trot, is this the year for Vardar to make it to the final weekend for the first time? Will it be Veszprem’s year to lift the coveted trophy at long last? We will not learn the answers to these questions in the group phase, but each and every team will be laying down the groundwork for a title challenge over the next five weeks. Sporting wishes. Only the top fourteen teams have survived the exciting group phase marathon which was played for the first time with 28 teams on the starting grid. And before we set our sights towards the upcoming playoff matches let me just underline that the many thrilling matches between even opponents in the group phase has certainly justified our move to revitalise this stage of the competition. The two clubs who won the Group A and B have also benefitted from another change in the playing system as Paris Saint-Germain Handball and FC Barcelona Lassa qualified directly to the quarter-finals and can now enjoy a welcome break in the busy season, while their future quarter-final opponents will have to overcome the Last 16 hurdles.
