For the positions described here, an attempt has been made to include such relevant information as: educa- tion and training needed, rate of pay, history of the position, work conditions, opportunities for advancement, economic demand for the work, examinations, licenses and/or certifi- cates needed, benefits, and location of position(s). Many of the positions require extensive command of the foreign language(s), whereas others involve duties in which the foreign language is regarded as a supplementary qualifi- cation. The foreign language student and worker must be cogni- zant of the fact that vocational opportunities in foreign lan- guages are strongly tied to sociological, economic, and politi- cal vicissitudes. It is assumed that the reader of this book is seriously in- terested in wing his foreign language study, both as a means of livelihood and as an expression of his desire to serve others. Opportune vocational choices are often based on extensive perusal of occupational literature along with extensive ef- fort. BRIGHAM The following bibliography attempts, first, to present a historical sketch of every newspaper printed in the United States from 1690 to 1820; secondly, to locate all files found in the various libraries of the country; and thirdly, to give a complete check list of the issues in the library of the American Antiquarian Society. The historical sketch of each paper gives the title, the date of establishment, the name of the editor or publisher, the fre- quency of issue and the date of discontinuance. It also attempts to give the exact date of issue when a change in title or name of publisher or frequency of publication occurs. In locating the files to be found in various libraries, no at- tempt is made to list every issue. In the case of common news- papers which are to be found in many libraries, only the longer files are noted, with a description of their completeness. Rare newspapers, which are known by only a few scattered issues, are minutely listed. The check list of the issues in the library of the American Antiquarian Society follows the style of the Library of Con- gress "Check List of Eighteenth Century Newspapers," and records all supplements, missing issues and mutilations. The arrangement is alphabetical by states and towns. Towns are placed according to their present State location. For convenience of alphabetization, the initial "The" in the titles of papers is disregarded. Papers are considered to be of folio size, unless otherwise stated.

Johanna Leinonen and Auvo Kostiainen This volume is based on a selection of papers presented at Johanna Leinonen and Auvo Kostiainen (Eds.) the conference FinnForum XI: Transnational Finnish Mobili- ties, held in Turku, Finland, in 2016. The twelve chapters dis- cuss two key issues of our time, mobility and transnational- ism, from the perspective of Finnish migration. The volume is divided into four sections. Part I, Mobile Pasts, Finland and Beyond, brings forth how Finland’s past – often imagined TRANSNATIONAL as more sedentary than today’s mobile world – was molded by various short and long-distance mobilities that occurred FINNISH MOBILITIES: both voluntarily and involuntarily. In Part II, Transnational Influences across the Atlantic, the focus is on sociocultural PROCEEDINGS OF transnationalism of Finnish migrants in the early 20th cen- tury United States. Taken together, Parts I and II show how FINNFORUM XI mobility and transnationalism are not unique features of our FINNISH MOBILITIES TRANSNATIONAL time, as scholars tend to portray them. Even before modern communication technologies and modes of transportation, migrants moved back and forth and nurtured transnational ties in various ways. Part III, Making of Contemporary Finn- ish America, examines how Finnishness is understood and maintained in North America today, focusing on the con- cepts of symbolic ethnicity and virtual villages. Part IV, Con- temporary Finnish Mobilities, centers on Finns’ present-day emigration patterns, repatriation experiences, and citizen- ship practices, illustrating how, globally speaking, Finns are privileged in their ability to be mobile and exercise transna- tionalism. Not only is the ability to move spread very uneven- ly, so is the capability to upkeep transnational connections, be they sociocultural, economic, political, or purely symbol- ic.

Student groups organized athletics, founded a debating society, and estab- lished a tunespaper that serves as an active voice of the students. The Class of 1950 produced many of the leaders of these groups and took the helm in much of the undergraduate organization. In preparing this, our college annual, we have tried to keep this recent Emerson advance in mind. We wanted our book to be, not only a permanent record of the growth of a class, but also a picture of Emerson itself. In photograph and in word we have made every effort to recapture the short segment of Emerson history of which we are a part. It is with these thoughts foremost in mind that we present the 1950 “Emersonian Dedication The only conclusive evidence of a man s sincerity is that he gives himself for a principle.
