It was becoming more arid, the tropical forests were disappearing from the northern latitudes, and there was an increase in seasonality. Research of the Chadronian (37- 33.7mya) in the Great Plains region of North America has documented the persistence of several mammalian taxa (e.g. primates) that are extinct in other parts of North America. -

GOIN Abstract: The record of extinct African metatherians (Mammalia, Theria) is scanty, restricted Received: 20 January 2021 in time (Eocene–Miocene), and its taxonomy is still subject of debate. Filling this gap is essential for a better understanding of the phylogenetic relationships among living marsupials, the biogeographic pathways that led to their current distribution as well as the successive evolutionary steps that led to their current diversity, habits and various specializations that distinguish them from placental mammals. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here we report the first skull of a 55 million year old peradectid marsupial from the early Eocene of North America and exceptionally preserved skeletons of an Oligocene herpetotheriid, both representing critical groups to understand early marsupial evolution. A comprehensive phylogenetic cladistic analysis of Marsupialia including the new findings and close relatives of marsupials show that peradectids are the sister group of living opossums and herpetotheriids are the sister group of all living marsupials. Conclusions/Significance: The results imply that North America played an important role in early Cenozoic marsupial evolutionary history and may have even been the center of origin of living marsupials and opossums. -

Taylor ABSTRACT Three new metatherian taxa are reported from the early Paleocene (Torrejonian) of the Nacimiento Formation, San Juan Basin, New Mexico; two new species of Swain- delphys, S. encinensis and S. johansoni, and one new species of Peradectes, P. coprexeches. Most of the new specimens consist of isolated teeth. Both new species of Swaindelphys are larger than S. cifellii, previously the only reported species of Swaindelphys, and the first report of this genus outside of Wyoming. S. johansoni is approximately intermediate in size between S. encinensis and S. cifellii. P. coprex- eches is nearly the same size as P. elegans, but differs in the more buccally expanded and convex outline of the upper molar metastylar lobe, and relatively larger stylar cusp C. This provides new information on early Paleocene metatherian morphology and significantly increases their known diversity. New significant morphology reported here includes that of a dP3 not previously reported for early Paleocene metatherians. More- over, this study helps to clarify taxonomic issues related to the validity of other Paleo- cene metatherians and is relevant to the origins and morphology of basal Herpetotheriidae and Peradectidae. BOYD1 AND ED WELSH2 1Department of Geology and Geologic Engineering, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Rapid City, South Dakota 57701 U.S.A., [email protected]; 2Division of Resource Management, Badlands National Park, Interior, South Dakota 57750 U.S.A., [email protected] ABSTRACT—Three new vertebrate localities are reported from within the Bloom Basin of the North Unit of Badlands National Park, Interior, South Dakota. These sites were discovered during paleontological surveys and monitoring of the park’s boundary fence construction activities. This report focuses on a new fauna recovered from one of these localities (BADL-LOC-0293) that is designated the Bloom Basin local fauna. This locality is situated approximately three meters below the Bloom Basin limestone bed, a geographically restricted strati- graphic unit only present within the Bloom Basin. Previous researchers have placed the Bloom Basin limestone bed at the contact between the Chadron and Brule formations. Given the unconformity known to occur between these formations in South Dakota, the recovery of a Chadronian (Late Eocene) fauna was expected from this locality. However, detailed collection and examination of fossils from BADL-LOC-0293 reveals an abundance of specimens referable to the characteristic Orellan taxa Hypertragulus calcaratus and Leptomeryx evansi. This fauna also includes new records for the taxa Adjidaumo lophatus and Brachygaulus, a biostratigraphic verifica- tion for the biochronologically ambiguous taxon Megaleptictis, and the possible presence of new leporid and hypertragulid taxa.
