Volume 16, Issue 1 May 2019 Crowdsourcing memories and artefacts to reconstruct Italian cinema history: Micro- histories of small-town exhibition in the 1950s Daniela Treveri Gennari, Oxford Brookes University, UK Sarah Culhane, Maynooth University, Ireland Abstract: In the mid-1950s, cinema was Italy’s second most important industry (Wagstaff 1995: 97). At its peak, the country’s exhibition circuit boasted some 8,000 cinemas (Quaglietti 1980). Despite the important role that cinema played within the social, cultural and economic fabric of 1950s Italy, we know relatively little about the workings of the distribution and exhibition networks across urban and rural contexts. We know even less about the individuals whose working lives and family businesses depended on the cinema industry. This article uses micro-history case studies to explore some of the broader questions associated with the history of film exhibition and distribution in 1950s Italy. We use both the oral history testimonies collected during the AHRC-funded Italian Cinema Audiences project (www.italiancinemaaudiences.org) and the crowdsourced digital artefacts donated by members of the general public during the creation of CineRicordi (www.cinericordi.it), an online archive that allows users to explore the history of Italian cinema-going. Building on the oral histories gathered for the Italian Cinema Audiences project, this archive integrates the video-interviews of 160 ordinary cinema-goers with public and private archival materials. With this article, we aim to explore the ‘relationship between image, oral narrative, and memory’ (Freund and Thomson 2011: 4), where - as Freund and Thomson describe – ‘words invest photographs with meaning’ (2011: 5).

Martinetto <[email protected]> ABSTRACT: Dunarobba and Pietrafitta are two outstanding fossil sites, which provide us with a glimpse on central Italian palaeoenviron- ments during two different time spans. The still poorly dated Dunarobba succession is framed, mainly on the basis of continental mollusc biochronology, within the Piacenzian-Gelasian interval, whereas the Pietrafitta one is reliably dated to the Calabrian thanks to vertebrate biochronology. Here we add several new palaeobotanical data for the two sites and we provide for the first time an overview of the strati- graphic, sedimentological, palaeontological and palaeoenvironmental results so-far obtained. We also review the palaeobotanical evi- dence concerning the neighbouring sites of Cava Toppetti I/II, Fosso Bianco, Torre Picchio and Villa San Faustino. On the basis of the available datasets we conclude that the Dunarobba Fossil Forest, with several large conifer trunks in upright position, was produced by an ancient swamp vegetation dominated by Glyptostrobus europaeus, and including few other woody (Alnus, Cephalanthus, Cornus) and herbaceous (Carex, Cladium, Schoenoplectus) plants.

Calvi and Its Territory
Comune di Calvi dell’Umbria CALVI AND ITS TERRITORY The town of Calvi in Umbria is located in the province of Terni, in the southern tip of Umbria and its territory is wedged in Sabina Lazio. The town has an altitude of 401 m. s.l.m. and is situated on a limestone cliff along the south-western slopes of Mount St. Pancrazio, the southern portion of the Chain Narni - Amelia, from which dominates the Tiber valley. It has an area of 45.75 sq km, consisting mainly of pine and holm oak woods, which over the centuries have formed, along with agricul- ture, an important source of income for the population. The view you can enjoy is characterized by hills Umbrian-Sabine, the average Tiber Valley and Mount Soratte, framed by the Monte Amiata to the northwest, by Monti Vulsini, Cimini and Sabatini Vicani west and the Alban hills and Moun- tains Prenestini Tiburtini south. The country enjoys a mild climate which, together to the amenity of the place and the relative proximity to the city of Rome, has made over the centuries a holiday resort, as shown by the ancient palaces and numerous country houses in the area. In addition to the old town, full of fascinating sights and testimonies of the prosperous past of this town as Palazzo Ferrini, the Monastery of the Ursuline Sisters, the churches of St. Bridget and St. Anthony in Piazza Mazzini and those of S. Maria Assunta and the SS.ma Trinity, the vast territory is characterized by small towns and villages that developed mainly around churches and rural chapels, which often bear the names.

The four appendices at the rear of the book give The Way of St Francis: Via di Francesco: From Florence to Assisi and Rome tips, route overviews and other useful information. I can't think of anything useful that has been omitted. I believe that Sandy Brown has written a very useful guide book for anyone contemplating the St Francis Way. There is a host of useful information, mapping and GPS provided that I think would enable a hiker to complete the route safely. The walk looks challenging and passes through beautiful areas of Central Italy. The weak part of the book for backpackers is the lack of information about camping but we do have the internet now to overcome that problem. But specialist guides written by cognoscenti and offering in depth, practical advice, flourish. Even in the age of GPS, pilgrims need help in staying on the straight and narrow.
