The so-called eremi encouraged a multisensory engagement of the faithful with complex structures that included receptacles for holy water, openings for the burning of incense, and moveable parts. They depicted a saint contemplating a crucifix or a book in a landscape and, as such, they provided a model for everyday pious life. Although they were less lifelike than the full-size recreations of holy sites, such as the Sacro Monte in Varallo, they had the significant advantage of allowing more spontaneous handling. The reduced scale made the objects portable and stimulated a more immediate pious experience. It seems likely that they formed part of an intimate and private setting. The focused attention given here to works by mostly anonymous artists reveals new categories of analysis, such as their religious efficacy. This allows discussion of these neglected artworks from a more positive perspective, in which their spiritual significance, technical accomplishment and functionality come to the fore. This article presents pottery from three late medieval kilns excavated in the Athenian Agora in the 1930s. Wasters from the kilns provide important proof of the local production of lead-glazed wares that come into use in the early Ottoman period and are found in surveys and excavations throughout Attica and Boeotia. Some of this pottery has been identified as maiolica, but portable x-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analysis has not indicated the presence of tin in the glaze. While distinctive in appearance, the pottery from these kilns seems to continue the ceramic tradition of earlier medieval Athens.

Accretions-build up or deposit of a foreign materials on a surface Efflorescence-white powdery or hard salt deposits that are located on the surface of the ceramic Spalling- loss from the separation of the ceramic layers due salts migrating through the body and glaze Flaking –lifting and separation of the glazing from the ceramic body without complete loss of the insecure area Light scratches - Scratches which do not score the surface of the item. Can be seen but not felt. Deep scratches - Scratches which score the surface of the item and can be felt with a fingernail.

    THE EARLIEST MAIOLICA CERAMIC DISHES IN THE OLD TOWN IN VILNIUS MIGLĖ URBONAITĖ-UBĖ BALTICA 21–22 BALTICA Abstract The paper analyses maiolica ceramic dishes from the late 16th and early 17th centuries found in Vilnius’ Old Town. The items in question were the first imported maiolica dishes in the town. They are classified and their production sites are identified on the basis of their technical and stylistic characteristics, and in accordance with foreign analogies. Thus, five plates are as- signed to the Antwerp production centre, while the stylistic and manufacturing characteristics of another plate are found to be ARCHAEOLOGIA similar to the Haarlem and Antwerp maiolica production centres. One small bowl with religious inscriptions is assigned to the Faenza production centre in Italy. A fragment of a berrettino-type plate is associated with the Liguria region or Venice. The paper attempts to assess the significance of the first maiolica dishes in daily life in Vilnius in the late 16thand early 17th cen- turies. The relationship between the find spots and historical data suggests that four dishes could be associated with Catholic monasteries. During the period in question, maiolica ceramics were a rarity: they performed both an aesthetic and a luxury function; on three pieces of bottoms of plates, holes were found for hanging the plate on the wall. The information presented in the paper provides an opportunity to deepen our knowledge about maiolica dishes in Vilnius’ Old Town, which have not been investigated much, and to identify the prospects for further research. The Ohio State University I960 Approved by 6m i Department of Fine and Applied Arts PREFACE Studies of Italian maiolica decoration have been primarily concerned with the distinctive Renaissance styles which appear after 1500. The decorative styles of quattrocento maiolica have not been adequately studied, especially with regard to the development and the chronology of styles and techniques. An examination of the stylistic development in maiolica decoration between U 4.OO and 1500 reveals a consistent, although complex pattern of progress, which prepares for and develops into the High Renaissance styles of the cinquecento. This stylistic development is not a simple organic growth, but rather a compound movement composed of a number of distinct stylistic changes, or phases. Throughout these phases we can distinguish a steady continuum of technical progress which allows an increasing freedom in, and coamand of, the ceramic medium. Maiolica wares are first produced in Italy during the trecento, and the earliest stylistic developments are found in the decorated wares produced in the environs of Florence, the foremost center of quattrocento art. The developments studied in this essay culminate with the emergence of the High Renaissance mode in maio­ lica decoration which appears in the decorative styles of Faenza during the last quarter of the fifteenth century.

Microanalytical investigations were performed on 17th-century faience artefacts (six 17 samples) excavated at Sárospatak, North-East-Hungary. The results are compared with 18 analytical data on the direct or indirect precursor, Italian maiolica. 19 The studied Hutterite faience artefacts reveal similarities with the Italian maiolica. 20 Calcareous clay with 14 to 22 wt% CaO was used for the buff-coloured ceramic body. Up to 21 about 400 µm thick, tin-opacified white and blue lead-alkali glaze was applied on the biscuit- 22 fired body. The glaze suspension contained sand admixture and a significant amount of 23 common salt and was not fritted before application. The colorants used for the ceramic 24 colours are lead antimonate for yellow, cobalt with arsenic, nickel and iron for blue, copper 25 for green and manganese with minor iron for black. The ceramic colours were applied on the 26 unfired glaze and maturing occurred during the second firing.

There are some who, in the past, have managed to combine both, sometimes considering making collections as an expression of wealth and a means of intimidation. But there are many who have made sacrifices, sometimes reducing their own needs to a minimum, for the enjoyment and the enrichment that works of art, with their beauty and wealth of historic and cultural resonances, can offer to them and to others.

    Lesson Plan #61 MAJOLICA RENAISSANCE In-Glaze Painting on Ceramic Surfaces by Diana Faris “Majolica” is the historical term used to describe a decorative ceramic technique of painting with glaze materials on top of an opaque, tin-based white glaze. It is a process that was first developed in the Middle East to imitate Chinese Porcelain. It was brought across Gibraltar into Spain by the Moors. Spanish potters then began making Muslim-inspired works in this method. Italians imported this ware from the Spanish port of Majorca, calling it “maiolica” ware. When the French imported it from the Italian city of Faenza, they called it “faience.” Delft pottery also employs the same technique as Majolica (Maiolica), and is most often represented by blue brushwork on a white background. Traditionally, the Majolica process involved completely coating terra cotta clay, or red-ware in an opaque white glaze, then painting on top of that unfired glaze with decorative stains and oxides. AMACO’s low-fire Teacher‘s Palette and Teacher‘s Choice glazes allow you to mimic this historic technique with ease and success in the classroom over any low-fire earthenware clay.
