BLAST FROM THE PAST Each week I try to upload pictures or other memorabilia from the past for your viewing pleasure. Here is a link to the pictures from Rich Bowler’s Presidential Retreat on 5/17-18/02. Prize to anyone who can remember where it was held. PROGRAM Sheriff Joe Lombardo was our speaker today. He began his law enforcement career in 1988 as a police officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). He was promoted to the position of Police Sergeant in 1996, Lieutenant in 2001 and served the department in various capacities 3 at this rank, including Patrol Lieutenant, Executive Lieutenant to the Sheriff, and Search/Rescue Commander. He was promoted to Captain in 2006 and served as the Bureau Commander for the Southwest Area Command and subsequently, the Bureau Commander for Homeland Security. In 2008, He was appointed as a Deputy Chief, serving as Division Commander of Support Operations, and he eventually became the Division Commander of the Patrol Division. He was promoted to the position of Assistant Sheriff in 2011. After 26 years on the force, Lombardo retired as a commissioned officer and was elected in 2014 as Sheriff of Clark County. Click on the link above for full details. He is an informative and interesting speaker and today was no different. We always appreciate the perspective that he brings. Some highlights: 1. Domestic violence homicides have increased (pandemic related) 2. Gang violence has increased (California is letting its prisoners out early (most of whom are gang members). Once of the reasons for the early releases is CA Gov. Newsome is trying to balance his budget by allowing parole early; he started at 80% of their original sentence, then went to 60% and now is at 20%. 3. Misdemeanor theft of $1,200 or less is no arrest, only a ticket. 4. Auto fatalities last year (pandemic year) lowest in 10 years, but now up 35% as people are driving more. 5. Metro has a Use of Force Review Board and a Citizen’s Review board and he encourages citizen participation on the boards. 6. Technology is helping…” ShotSpotter” is an electronic surveillance monitor placed in 10 spots around the valley. It can identify gunfire and distinguish between fireworks, car backfires, etc. 7. Legalization of marijuana is not having measurable effect on traffic accidents, etc. However, the black market in marijuana is still as strong as ever. 8. Applicants for Metro positions have to have at least a two-year interval between their last use of marijuana and hiring. 9. Kevin McMahill, who recently retired as Metro Undersheriff will make a great replacement as Sheriff (expect a formal announcement next Monday that Sheriff Lombardo is throwing his hat in the upcoming Nevada governor race.) 10. And lots more that didn’t make it into your scribe’s notes, alas. ___________________________________________________________________________________ CONCLUSION We ended the meeting by standing and reciting the Four-Way Test. 4 Calendar of Events Rotary District 5300 - Calendar for Las Vegas Southwest DATE TIME CLUB EVENT NAME LOCATION / COMMENTS June - Rotary Fellowships Month There will be a club social on Thursday, 6/24/21, from 5:30 p.m.
