The ways women experienced these pains, as well as the ways they were perceived by physicians and depicted in wider medical discourses, however, are historically and culturally specific. In late nineteenth and early twentieth century English Canada – a key period in terms of both the medicalization of birth and the professionalization of obstetrics – the dominant medical perception of the female body held that white, middle-class, and urban-dwelling women were particularly “delicate” and sensitive to pain for a variety of reasons. Drawing on a broad range of archival and print sources including medical textbooks, course calendars, lecture notes, professional medical journals, popular advice literature, diaries, and private correspondence, this dissertation unpacks the medical construction of the “delicate woman”, examining the evolution of these ideas and their impact. I argue that the variety of gendered, class- based, and racialized distinctions that underpinned the construction of female “delicacy” and sensitivity to pain were inseparable from turn-of-the-twentieth century social and cultural tensions. Medical rhetoric and perceptions of the delicate woman – as well as the increasingly pathological views of both pregnancy and birth that were inherently connected with this particular construction of the female body – contributed to a new type of birth experience for many women during these transformative decades. While the growing popularity of natural childbirth ideologies in the 1940s and 1950s represented some of the first substantial and organized opposition to the medicalization of childbirth that had been ongoing since the second half of the nineteenth century, proponents of natural birth ultimately continued to articulate conservative views of the female body, birth, and the doctor-patient relationship. i Acknowledgements In completing this project, I have been incredibly fortunate to have the support of excellent scholars, generous funding organizations, and an always encouraging group of friends and family. Tracy Penny Light has been an ongoing source of enthusiasm and support since my time as a first year PhD student in her “History of Medicine” doctoral seminar. Soldiers, civilians, and slaves listened to and performed popular songs almost constantly. The heightened political and emotional climate of the war created a need for Americans to express themselves in a variety of ways, and music was one of the best. It did not require a high level of literacy and it could be performed in groups to ensure that the ideas embedded in each song immediately reached a large audience. Previous studies of Civil War music have focused on the music itself. Historians and musicologists have examined the types of songs published during the war and considered how they reflected the popular mood of northerners and southerners. This study utilizes the letters, diaries, memoirs, and newspapers of the 1860s to delve deeper and determine what roles music played in Civil War America. This study begins by examining the explosion of professional and amateur music that accompanied the onset of the Civil War. Of the songs produced by this explosion, the most popular and resonant were those that addressed the political causes of the war and were adopted as the rallying cries of northerners and southerners. All classes of Americans used songs in a variety of ways, and this study specifically examines the role of music on the home-front, in the armies, and among African Americans.

These wonderful midwives were the first project leaders in New South Wales to plan and implement midwifery models of care in the form of team midwifery at two different hospitals. Both midwives fought many battles to achieve the success with the midwifery models of care that they did.

HRC protocol #__________________ iii ABSTRACT Kingsley, Erin (Ph.D., English, English Department) Deliver Me: Pregnancy, Birth, and the Body in the British Novel, 1900-1950 Thesis directed by Associate Professor Jane Garrity Deliver Me: Pregnancy, Birth, and the Body in the British Novel, 1900-1950 explores three ways British novels engage with the rise of the “culture of pregnancy,” an extreme interest in reproduction occurring during the modernist movement. This culture of pregnancy was intimately facilitated by the joint explosion of dailies and periodicals and the rise of “experts,” ranging from doctors presiding over the birthing chamber to self-help books dictating how women should control their birth-giving. In response to this culture of pregnancy, some modernist writers portray the feminine reproductive body as a suffering entity that can be saved by an alignment with traditionally- coded masculine aspects of the mind.
