Approximate distances: Ross-on-Wye 3.5 miles Monmouth 7 miles Hereford 18 miles Gloucester 19 miles Chepstow 20 miles THE PROPERTY Kerne Lodge was the home of Robert Pashley, the renowned 'Wizard of the Wye', the most successful salmon fisherman in the history of the river Wye, with over 10,000 salmon to his name. The property is believed to date back to the 17th century though most of it dates from the 19th century. It has been elegantly updated under current ownership whilst retaining the charm and character of former years. The main rooms all have fantastic views across the river and fields to Goodrich Castle. The kitchen-breakfast room has been opened up to provide a superb, contemporary space with a bespoke kitchen with granite work-surfaces and a Britannia range cooker; in the breakfast area is the wood-burning stove in the stone fireplace. There is a walk-in pantry just off the kitchen and a former servants' passage now housing a utility room, office, workshop area and cloakroom. The dining room offers a well-proportioned and more formal space for dining; a door leads through to the main hallway. The main entrance hall features a stairway with curved mahogany handrails with hand- carved wooden claws to the first tread of the stairs. The impressive sitting room is over 33' long, with polished wooden floors, marble fireplace with a Clearview wood- burning stove and French windows leading out to the terrace and gardens. The galleried landing is wonderfully light, with windows to the front and rear. To one side of the landing is the master suite: a superb bedroom with a dressing room and recently re-modelled en-suite bathroom. The en- suite is elegantly-presented, complete with a spa bath to one end and large walk-in shower area to the other. There are three further bedrooms, two of which have en-suites. There is also a family bathroom on this floor. OUTSIDE The property is approached via the driveway that sweeps uphill to the double garage and parking area. A steel and glass balustrade in front of the house offers stunning views across the river and beyond. The terrace leads to the level area of lawn, sheltered by the trees above, among which rhododendrons add splashes of colour amidst the many specimen trees planted there. The path leads on through the grounds, past the ruins of an old stone bothy, past the greenhouse and lavender hedge to an area where soft fruits grow in abundance. The views glimpsed through the various stopping points along the way are breath- taking. Across the road is the river frontage currently belonging to Kerne Lodge where the owners enjoy single bank fishing rights along the Wye, which makes a handsome addition to the property and generates an income for the owners, who market it through the Wye and Usk Foundation.
