Program Note:

Insurgence examines the question: can a simple lullaby quell the animosities of a militaristic force?

Many thanks to Fred Harris, who approached me in Fall 2017 and proposed that I write a new work for percussion ensemble. Insurgence is commissioned by the MIT Wind Ensemble and dedicated to the members of the 2017-2018 MITWE percussion section.

Instrumentation:

Triangle

2 Vibraphones Crotales (lower octave) Glockenspiel Chimes Marimba (5 octave)

Timpani (4 drums)

n.b. Crotales, Chimes, Timpani, and Tam-tam are shared by multiple players

Performance Notes:

Recommended staging: semicircle reflecting score order (i.e. conductor’s extreme left = top staff; conductor’s extreme right = bottom staff).

Accidentals remain in effect for the duration of the measure at the octave in which they occur. They are sometimes rewritten within a measure for clarity.
