JUNE NEWSLETTER ~ ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CHURCH AND SCHOOL

I hope this newsletter finds you in good health and peace.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this last newsletter to you. As you have probably already heard, Gustavo Garcia-Siller has appointed me pastor of Sacred Heart of Church in Comfort and St. Anthony Church in Harper starting July 01, 2020. This announcement was made public at a clergy meeting on Monday, May 18, 2020. Fr. Miguel Moreno will be taking my place as the next pastor of St. Gregory Church and School. His assignment will also begin on July 01, 2020. He is currently the Parochial Vicar at Church in San Antonio and is looking forward to meeting the St. Gregory community. I know Fr. Miguel well. When he was a seminarian, he spent a summer with me at St. John Berchmans. The community loved him and was sad when his summer assignment ended and he had to return to the Seminary. I am very happy that he was the one chosen to take my place as Pastor of St. Gregory’s Church and School.

On July 01, 2012 Archbishop Gustavo appointed me Pastor of St. Gregory’s. It is hard to believe it has been almost eight years since that has happened and my time is coming to an end. The time has just flown by. It seems like only yesterday when I left St. John Berchmans to start a new assignment at St. Gregory’s. Back then I was very content with where I was and did not want to leave. I had grown to love the people and together we worked very hard to make improvements to our faith community. Now as I look back to the time I have spent with you, I see the same thing has happened again. I love the people and everything about St. Gregory’s. I feel at home here and it is going to be very, very, hard to get in the car and drive away to a new place and start all over again. The thought that I may never see some of you again makes me feel sad and depressed. St. Gregory’s Church and School have given me many challenges but it has also given me many blessings and it is these blessings that I will always remember.

So to the parishioners of St. Gregory’s, I want to say THANK YOU for your support and love; I have really enjoyed your company. Wherever we got together, be it at an organizational meeting, fish fry, festival, posada, arts and crafts or spending time with you at your home or a restaurant, those were very special times for me. I also want to thank all the volunteers who helped around our campus. The ministers, CYO board members and coaches, members of our organizations and those who cleaned and sanitized our church. You have no idea how much I appreciate what you have done.

To our school children, their families, the teachers and staff I want to say THANK YOU for the happiness you have given me and for making me a part of the St. Gregory School family. Thank you to the students for inviting me to lunch, recess, field trips, your sports games, and for being such great altar servers. Thank you teachers for inviting me to be a part of your classes, special events, and thank you staff for making me feel a part of your team.

And finally, to the St. Gregory Parish Office staff I want to say THANK YOU. I could not have asked for a better, nicer, more professional group to work with. I will always be grateful for the help you have given me and your friendship.

As I look back on my life, the thought comes to me that my life is not mine but belongs to God. I am his servant in this life and in the next. It has taken me many years to realize it is His will that matters and not my own. As a young man in college, I had plans for my life and being a priest was not even in the picture. The thought of becoming a priest was so foreign to me yet it kept coming into my life even though I had tried to keep it out. After six years of wrestling with this idea, I decided to surrender to God and to do things his way instead of mine. That was the best decision I have ever made. The new road I have embarked on has had its share of headaches and stress but it has also given me a deep sense of peace. As I begin to pack my suitcase again and embark on a new path God has put me on, I want to first of all ask your forgiveness for the times I have been uncharitable to you; I have never claimed to be a and I know I have my faults. I try my best each day to live as I should but there are periods when I fail. For these times I humbly ask for your forgiveness. I am hoping we will see each other again in the near future so we can recall the good memories we had at St. Gregory’s.

In closing, I want to share something that had happened to me while I was at St. John Berchmans. One evening after a meeting in the school I decided to walk the halls and look at the student’s work their teachers had posted in the hallways. Continued next page.

June Newsletter continued.

At that time the thought of leaving St. John Berchmans was heavy on my heart and making me feel depressed. As I got close to one of the elementary rooms I noticed the students had been working on a verse. Each student wrote this verse on their paper and the papers were posted outside the classroom.

The verse said: “God blesses those who obey Him; happy the man who puts his trust in the Lord!” Proverbs 16:20.

At that moment, I realized God had used these children and their teacher to give me a message, and now I pass it on to you. Thank you again for everything. I will always remember you!

May the of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, watch over all of us and keep us in their care.

Matthew 5:38-48, Forgive always.

Scripture In ancient times, the concept of justice was “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.”

That was devised to limit the conlict between clans from getting out of hand Lesson (Exodus 21:24, Leviticus 24:20, and Deuteronomy 19:21). Later, the concepts was misused to defend a brutal form of justice that easily escalated into blood feuds. Jesus’ teaching changed all that.

Jesus’ approach to justice turns our eyes, not to justice on Earth, but in Heaven. Loving our enemies or those who hurt us repeatedly means forgiving them over and over. That often seems an impossible task, but his extreme forgiveness is what Jesus offers us on the Cross. As , we are called to be Christ to others, in words and deeds.

What can a parent do? The best way parents can pass on the faith in Christ is by example, especially when it is dificult. Explain that we can forgive someone without having to be best friends with them. Explain that whatever the hurt, we can pray for the person and forgive them in our hearts. Today we celebrate Trinity Sunday. The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity highlights our Triune God; three Persons in one: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

“The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them. It is the most fundamental and essential teaching in the “hierarchy of the truths of faith.” The whole history of is identical with the history of the way and the means by which the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, reveals himself to men “and reconciles and unites with himself those who turn away from sin.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 234)

The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives us another analogy wherein we can see the reasonableness of the Trinity by helping us to see the possibility of distinct persons who possess the same nature. “The Christian family is a communion of persons, a sign and image of the communion of the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit.” CCC 2205

When we think of a family, we can see how a father, mother, and child can be distinct persons and yet possess the same nature (human), just as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three distinct persons who each possess the same nature (divine). The weakness, of course, is that in God each person possesses the one infinite and immutable divine nature, and is therefore, one being. Our analogous family consists of three beings. Again, no analogy is perfect. ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CATHOLIC CHURCH PAGE 6
