CALLING All WOMEN TO OUR ANNUAL DAY OF REFLECTION

The theme this year will be “What about Lois and Eunice”? The Biblical Lois and Eunice are examples of the influence a devout grandmother and a faith-filled mother can have on the history of the Church and the world. At this Lenten Day of reflection we will take a look at some of the well known and lesser known women who have shaped our faith. With a mix of input, prayer, and some light-hearted moments, we’ll consider: What about me? What about us? This event will be held at Hampton Hall on Thursday, March 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with lunch served at 12 noon. The lunch will be 3 courses- salad, entrée and dessert. The entrée choices are Fines Herb chicken, Benne Seed crusted salmon or Portabella ravioli. The cost is $30. Please make your check payable to St. Gregory the Great and indicate on the memo line your choice of entrée. Mail your check to Lidia Marques, 82 Rose Bush Lane, Bluffton, SC 29909. Deadline for reservations is Friday, February 23. Any questions, call Lidia at 843-705-9683 or email her at [email protected]. Also a free will offering will be taken for the SCCCW’s convention project.

GIVE GOD THE GLORY

A curious feature of the first half of Mark’s is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great “secret” revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God—not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus “humbled” himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today’s healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God’s reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

LENT BEGINS - WEDNESDAY, February 14

The 40-day Lenten season is our annual preparation for the celebration. Lent is a time for conversion and self denial, for “returning to God with our whole heart” (Joel 2:12). Along with catechumens preparing for , we “repent and believe in the good news” (Mark 1:15). We’re told to do things in Lent, especially to pray, fast and give alms. Lent is first of all about doing with our whole self, body, mind and soul. Lenten discipline is not just fostering the right religious attitudes and ideas. During Lent we recommit ourselves to being “practicing Catholics,” to living by the laws of Christ and the Church and to disciplining ourselves so we can be open to the grace to grow in faith, hope and love. Ash Wednesday is February 14. Palm Sunday is March 25. The Easter Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday is March 29-31. Easter Sunday is April 1.

MASSES ON ASH WEDNESDAY 6:45 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 in Spanish ALL MASSES WILL BE CELEBRATED AT ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CATHOLIC CHURCH ASHES WILL BE DISTRIBUTED AT MASS ONLY

STATIONS OF THE CROSS • Stations of the Cross with Benediction will be prayed in English each Friday in Lent at 4:00 p.m. at St. Gregory the Great Church. • Stations will be prayed in Spanish each Friday at 6:30 p.m. at St. Gregory the Great Church followed by the 7:00 p.m. Spanish Mass

LENTEN DIETARY REGULATIONS

Current laws of the Catholic Church regarding fast and abstinence during the season of Lent are as follows: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast. On days of fast, one full meal is allowed. Two lesser meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, however together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. Catholics who have completed their 18th year are bound by this law until the beginning of their 60th year. Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. On days of abstinence, meats should not be taken at any meal. The law of abstinence binds ALL Catholics who have completed their 14th year. In addition to the few days on which a strict fast must be kept, there is a spirituality of fasting that permeates these forty days. Our “fast” can include acts of self-sacrifice and refraining from frivolous activities, so as to make room for prayer and works of charity, which are the fabric of the Lenten season.
