International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Invention ISSN (Online): 2319 – 7722, ISSN (Print): 2319 – 7714 www.ijhssi.org Volume 2 Issue 11ǁ November. 2013ǁ PP.48-54 The Arian Controversy, its Ramifications and Lessons for the Ghanaian Church IDDRISSU ADAM SHAIBU Department of Religion & Human Values, University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast-Ghana ABSTRACT: The thrust of this paper is to explore the Arian controversy, the ramifications of decisions taken by the various councils on the body of Jesus Christ and the possible lessons that the Ghanaian Church can learn from these ramifications. This was done by reviewing literature on the Arian controversy. It came out that Arianism was condemned at the council of Nicaea. However, this did not end the controversy due to the inclusion of a word that was deemed unbiblical and the interferences of some Roman Emperors.The paper concludes that it is advisable that the church ought to have the capacity to deal with her internal problems without the support of a third party, especially those without any theological insight to issues of the Church. It seldom leads to cribbing, leads to negativity, breeds tension and sometimes fighting/civil war which then lead to destruction of lives and properties. I. THE GREACO-ROMAN WORLD Although, Christianity emerged in the Roman world, it matured in the world of Greek philosophy and ideas. The Greek world was one that paid much respect to philosophical sophistication. The Early Church was thus permeated and penetrated by this philosophical sophistication (Hellenism) (Weaver, 1987). The religion in its earliest form can be said to be a hellenistic movement that attracted hellenised people from different ethnic groups. -

Middle Ages 500-1000 1 3 The Dark Age Church Period of Barbarian Invasions AD 500—1000 Introduction With the endorsement of the Emperor and obligatory church membership for all Roman citizens across the empire, Roman Christianity continued to change the nature of the Church, in stead of visa versa. The humble beginnings were soon forgotten in the luxurious halls and civil power of the highest courts and assemblies of the known world. Who needs spiritual power when you can have civil power? The transition from being the persecuted to the persecutor, from the powerless to the powerful with Imperial and divine authority brought with it the inevitable seeds of corruption. Some say that Christianity won the known world in the first five centuries, but a closer look may reveal that the world had won Christianity as well, and that, in much less time. The year 476 usually marks the end of the Christian Roman Empire in the West. -

THE SIGNIFICANCE AND MEANING OF THE LITURGY FOR OUR DAILY LIVES Philip Kariatlis For many Orthodox Christians today, the divine Liturgy is simply another service that they attend in order to fulfil their Christian duty - it is the proper thing to do - without it necessarily having any particular meaning for their everyday life. It is not something that they long to go to because of a real sense of personal joy that it gives to their life empowering them to face the daily challenges that they might encounter. Unfortunately, for many of our faithful - even though they are well- intentioned - in their most honest moments, the Liturgy has become a ‘joyless celebration’. It is often said, for example: “I don’t get anything out of the Service” and for this reason they feel a sense of frustration. Still others, will argue: “I consider myself a Christian but I don’t see why I need to go to Church every Sunday, if at all.” In all this, there is a real sense that, over time, our faithful have forgotten not only what the Liturgy is essentially all about, but equally importantly the significance of this celebration for their everyday life. Even the phrase that is often used, “I attend the Liturgy” shows that over time it has become misunderstood. Far from the Liturgy being a theatrical performance between priest and chanters at which the faithful are simply present, from the very beginning, even in its most primitive form as can be witnessed in the New Testament, the Eucharist was something that the faithful actively participated in, and not simply passively attended, an event that was personally enriching and powerfully transformative for their life. -

ABSTRACT The Apostolic Tradition in the Ecclesiastical Histories of Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret Scott A. Rushing, Ph.D. Mentor: Daniel H. Williams, Ph.D. This dissertation analyzes the transposition of the apostolic tradition in the fifth-century ecclesiastical histories of Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret. In the early patristic era, the apostolic tradition was defined as the transmission of the apostles’ teachings through the forms of Scripture, the rule of faith, and episcopal succession. Early Christians, e.g., Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Origen, believed that these channels preserved the original apostolic doctrines, and that the Church had faithfully handed them to successive generations. The Greek historians located the quintessence of the apostolic tradition through these traditional channels. However, the content of the tradition became transposed as a result of three historical movements during the fourth century: (1) Constantine inaugurated an era of Christian emperors, (2) the Council of Nicaea promulgated a creed in 325 A.D., and (3) monasticism emerged as a counter-cultural movement. Due to the confluence of these sweeping historical developments, the historians assumed the Nicene creed, the monastics, and Christian emperors into their taxonomy of the apostolic tradition. For reasons that crystallize long after Nicaea, the historians concluded that pro-Nicene theology epitomized the apostolic message. They accepted the introduction of new vocabulary, e.g. homoousios, as the standard of orthodoxy. In addition, the historians commended the pro- Nicene monastics and emperors as orthodox exemplars responsible for defending the apostolic tradition against the attacks of heretical enemies. The second chapter of this dissertation surveys the development of the apostolic tradition. -

None. However, daily personal prayer is highly recommended. Required Weekly Observances. Participation in the Divine Liturgy (Mass) is required. If the Divine Liturgy is not available, participation in the Latin Rite Mass fulfills the requirement. Required Occasional Observances. The Eastern Rites follow a liturgical calendar, as does the Latin Rite. However, there are significant differences. The Eastern Rites still follow the Julian Calendar, which now has a difference of about 13 days – thus, major feasts fall about 13 days after they do in the West. This could be a point of contention for Eastern Rite inmates practicing Western Rite liturgies. Sensitivity should be maintained by possibly incorporating special prayer on Eastern Rite Holy days into the Mass. Each liturgical season has a focus; i.e., Christmas (Incarnation), Lent (Human Mortality), Easter (Salvation). Be mindful that some very important seasons do not match Western practices; i.e., Christmas and Holy Week. Holy Days. There are about 28 holy days in the Eastern Rites. However, only some require attendance at the Divine Liturgy. In the Byzantine Rite, those requiring attendance are: Epiphany, Ascension, St. Peter and Paul, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Christmas. Of the other 15 solemn and seven simple holy days, attendance is not mandatory but recommended. (1 of 5) In the Ukrainian Rites, the following are obligatory feasts: Circumcision, Easter, Dormition of Mary, Epiphany, Ascension, Immaculate Conception, Annunciation, Pentecost, and Christmas. -

In a volume printed for private circulation by Ernest A. Savage we find that the seven Scottish monastic houses mentioned had in the thirteenth century a total of 454 volumes. Melrose had most with 96 volumes, while Dunfermline had 43; and though these, on present day standards, may appear to be very small collections, it must be remembered that the size of all medieval libraries was restricted by the fact that books had to be copied by hand and that the finest of them, the illuminated manuscripts, represent many months, even years, of assiduous labour. -

We all know the Lord’s Prayer, and we have all recited it countless times in our lives, and yet today, let us pray it A TEACHING DIVINE LITURGY slowly and attentively, paying attention to each sentence and understanding the request of each petition. Talk 1 – Introduction When Prince Vladimir’s emissaries visited the Church of Holy Following the Lord’s Prayer, we will hear the priest lift up the holy gifts and say, “Let us attend, the Holy Gifts are for the Holy Wisdom in Constantinople, back in the 10 th century, and attended a people of God.” To which we respond by singing, “One is Holy, One is Lord.” We affirm that although the holy gifts are for worship service, they explained to their leader: “We knew not the holy people, only one is holy, and that one is Jesus Christ. Thus, in order for us to be holy, we must unite ourselves to whether we were in heaven or on earth. One thing we understood, Christ, become one with Him and be sanctified by His presence.Following this comes the moment of receiving Holy that God was in our midst!” Communion. It should be obvious that the whole Liturgy leads up to the receiving of Holy Communion. Ó Copyright by Geoffrey Ready 2020 Living God’s Story: Strengthening Liturgical Participation and Christian Formation through the Renewal of Enacted Narrative in the Orthodox Divine Liturgy Geoffrey Ready Doctor of Ministry Trinity College and the University of Toronto 2020 Abstract It is axiomatic in Orthodox liturgical theology that the central act of worship, the Divine Liturgy, is a participation here and now in the coming kingdom of God. This should naturally result in the shaping of Orthodox worshippers to live in this age according to the heaven-on-earth reality of the age to come, to live the “liturgy after the liturgy” in a life of kingdom-building. Yet there is little to suggest that this is happening in Orthodox churches today. Drawing on postcritical insights that challenge modernity’s limitations— especially the concept of life as an enacted social drama, the importance of narrative for signification and formation, and the priority of embodied, participatory knowledge—the author proposes that the decline in the Orthodox Divine Liturgy's power to transform worshippers results principally from an eclipse of the enacted narrative of the kingdom of God within liturgical celebration. ii Using his ministry base of an Orthodox mission parish as a case study, the author has implemented a series of changes in the celebration of the Divine Liturgy to recover and prioritise narrative elements. -
