Commemorative Bricks

The Commemorative brick program is an important part of the Alumni Association. Alum and friends can purchase an inscribed brick in their own names or to honor a loved one. Each commemorative brick costs $25.00 and has up to two lines, with a maximum of 14 characters per line – each space represents one character. The bricks will be inlaid in the sidewalk around the new student services building. If you are interested in purchasing a brick(s), please contact Jennifer Powell at (580) 371‐ 2371 Ext. 137. A “Star Search” grand prize winner, a drummer with platinum album sales, a pioneer for women in , and the official “Oklahoma Balladeer” will be inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in November. Sam Harris, Jamie Oldaker, Jean Shepard, and our own MSC 1954 graduate, Les Gilliam, will join the ranks of honorees as the 2010 class of inductees.

"The Oklahoma Balladeer" Les Gilliam is the official “Oklahoma Balladeer,” so designated by the Oklahoma State Legislature in 1998. He is a native of Gene Autry, Oklahoma and is a singer, songwriter, and recording artist. SCOTT LANDGRAF WITH LES GILLIAM He was recently included in a new book “Distinguished Oklahomans.” In 2005, Les received the most prestigious award in Music by receiving the coveted “Wrangler Award” from the National and Western Heritage Museum in . In 2006, he was nominated for the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. Also in 2006 Les received the Governor’s Arts Award from the Governor of the State of Oklahoma for his many years of entertaining Oklahomans and keeping western music alive. In 2008, Les received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Gene Autry Museum in his hometown. He is currently based in Ponca City, Oklahoma and entertains as a solo act with his guitar, with his trio, or with his band, The Silver Lake Band. The Les Gilliam Trio includes Jeanne Cahill, Jerome Campbell and Les. His great band includes former Playboy Smiley Weaver on , Ponca City native and long time Kay Country favorite Don Long on drums, country fiddler and top-notch vocalist Jerald Ritter, and the Pride of Winfield, Kenny Glasgow on bass. Former MSC standout Managing Seattle pros

Former Murray State College player has been promoted to interim of the following the recent firing of . Brown played two years at Murray State College. He was recruited by Rick Ridley out of Moss High School in the class of 1984. Brown was part of the best recruiting classes ever at MSC. During Brown’s first season at MSC, the team won their first 20 games. During Brown’s second year at MSC, the team was in the regionals at Tulsa. The son of big leaguer and nephew of , he was drafted as a in the 29th round of the 1989 amateur draft by the and pitched in their chain for four years. After a few years playing with the independent league Amarillo Dillas, he became a player/manager for the club in 1998. He was the Texas-Louisiana League Pitcher of the Year in 1995, 1997 and 1998, and made the league’s all-star team from 1995 to 1998. He was the Man- ager of the Year in 1999. Since 2001 Brown has managed in the Seattle Mariners system, including Triple-A Tacoma for the past four years. He has also managed the San Bernardino Stampede, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the and the San Antonio Missions.
