We are still pressing forward to complete the design and contracting phases of the At Ease Club renovation before the end of the year. We now have the final plans and are costing out equipment and furnishing items as we go along. Many decisions remain to be made, particularly regarding interior design specifics. Based on what we know now, the total cost should be in the neighborhood of one million dollars. Our by-laws require membership approval of expenditures over one million dollars for a specific action or project. If our projections continue to be close to or exceed that number, we plan to conduct a vote of the membership on approval of expenditures for the At Ease Club renovation coincident with the Board election at the Annual Meeting. Your Board has approved our new Five Year Plan. As always, we have taken a conservative approach to outlining our plans for the future. The Plan will be the main focus of our Quarterly Forum on October 30, 2013. As you know, the downturn in real estate that began in 2008 and the buy-back program have had a significant and negative effect on IRCC. At this point, I want to thank Nancy Bartlett and Four Star Real Estate for their service on our behalf. As I write this, we know that our real estate closings for our Fiscal Year 2013 totaled in the mid- sixties against a previously projected forty-five. To date, Four Star has demonstrated enthusiasm and innovativeness as our Real Estate Department and I pray that will continue to be the case.

T. J. (Jim) Moseley Chairman

From the General Manager Though we are through the height of hurricane season it is still imperative that all of us continue to be ready to act should one approach our area. That preparedness includes having supplies to last you a minimum of three days if you stay, or plans on when you’re going to leave and where are you going to go if you choose to evacuate. I continue to hear how you have to have a reservation in order to eat at the Club and I cannot stress enough that that is incorrect. We still prefer reservations if you know you are going to eat dinner on a particular day because that helps us schedule the right labor force for that night. But if you are sitting at home and don’t feel like cooking we hope your first choice is your Club. So please do not hesitate to come to the Club for dinner even without a reservation. We will get you to a table and provide the service you deserve and should expect. Now that I have put a gap in the speed bumps in front of the Pro Shop we will be keeping an eye on how fast people are going in that area. This is a very busy area with people moving about on foot, bicycles, and in carts so it is inherently dangerous especially when carts are speeding through. I know that many of the snowbirds did not have to deal with the solid bumps, so those of you who did might make it clear that it was not pleasant but it was effective. Trust me when I say I don’t want to put them back up, I travel that way every day multiple times. But safety is of the utmost importance and if it becomes unsafe then it will become necessary to go back to the solid bump. I have always heard very nice reviews on the club and the service; and now I am hearing very nice comments about the noticeable improvement in food quality. This is one of the changes we made ahead of the renovation, another being more attention to detail on cleanliness. There are even more behind the scenes changes that have been made. So if you have not been to the Club lately, come on in and see if you notice these great improvements. Enjoy the fall weather in Florida!

1. HURRICANE PREP—DON’T GET COMPLACENT!: October/November are still peak months for hurricane activity. Yes, we’ve been lucky as the 9 or so named storms predicted have not materialized. But they can come in “groups” as happened in 2004 when we had 3 hurricanes skirt us in a two week period. So, freshen you bottled tap water and review your “personal” check list one more time—to get you through to season-end—1 DECEMBER. 2. REMINDER: OVERNIGHT PARKING OF PODS STORAGE CONTAINERS AND OTHER “OVERSIZED VEHICLES”-- Para 6.4 of the Deed of Restrictions prohibits the overnight, in-community Richard Agnew 2 October 2013 Indian River Colony Club parking of “oversized” (those that won’t fit in the garage) vehicles, motor homes, storage pods, trailers, campers, boats or boat trailers unless they are parked in the garage or RV Park. Temporary exception requests submitted in advance in writing may be considered by the General Manager. Whether in conjunction with a renovation project or for other storage/moving/personal needs, please plan ahead and abide by Deed policy in maintaining community aesthetics.

3. “SINGLE STREAM” RECYCLING--REMINDER: Waste Management’s Wednesday (“Hump Daaaaaaaaaay, yah!”—says the Geico camel) (Soon to be MONDAYS starting 30 Sept.) recycle pick-up permits ALL recyclables to be put in the same container. Here are the particulars: PAPER—newspapers, magazines, telephone books, catalogs, office paper—No plastic bags or film. Please contact WM, 723- 4455 or 636-6894, for disposition info for compact fluorescent light bulbs and electronics (TVs, computers, key boards, etc.)—WM has a contractor that picks these up curb-side by appointment only. Keep up the good recycling work and PLEASE TAKE STEPS TO KEEP PAPER AND PLASTICS FROM BLOWING OUT OF YOUR CURB-SIDE CONTAINERS.

4. BRIGHT HOUSE SERVICES: IRCC Residents should have recently received a mailed notice from Bright House concerning free equipment upgrades available to IRCC residents. BH went “all-digital” in July and in order to receive the all-digital signal with many more channels to include Travel and Golf Channels, one must have an “HD ready” TV, a cable box or obtain a free, compact digital adapter that connects directly to the TV. If you are not receiving the digital signal already, BH will provide, deliver and install up to three adapters and remotes per household—free of charge. Simply call BH Customer Service at 1-855-354-9826 or 1-877-892-3279. In addition, residents with digital tuners built into their TV sets may view IRCC’s Video News Channel on Channel 98.1. Residents with Digital Cable (Converter Box) or a digital adapter will find the Video News Channel on Channel 732.

At Ease Club October- So the season is beginning and it is very nice to meet the members who were away. As always, I encourage the membership to call me or come for a visit. I need the feedback and input. A couple of words about reservations; they are not required. You may come to the club and we will accommodate you. Reservations are appreciated and they are good to use for planning, but they are not required. One caveat is that they continue to be required for events with special menus, parties like Singles Night, and block parties for example. Also, for special events like holidays and balls and RAC functions we will continue to need reservations. The new wine list will be ready any day now. I appreciate all the people who came on September 21st and Patrick O’Hagan tasted wine with us. Our philosophy on the wine list was to make many wines available by the glass. We have kept the house Burgundy and the house Chablis and have added several varietals and blends to that on a tiered pricing system. We will be providing menus on the tables so the price won’t be so mysterious. We are printing the menu in house and will revise often. With that in mind, please continue to provide your wine recommendations. We have made some small changes to dinner service lately. We will now offer either menu at any table. So if you want a hamburger in the main dining room or steak in the 19th Hole that will be possible. Finally, we have slightly changed the pm ‘food to go’. As before, if you order prior to 4:30 we can ensure that you have your preferred pick up time. But now you can also order at any time you would like. So if you order at 6:30 we will accept the order and prepare your food with the regular dinner flow. This means that on a slow night about 15 minutes. On a busy night it might be a few more. The current meal delivery process has not changed. I would like to invite you to join us for Birthday Brunch on 10/20 and Seafood Night on 10/25.

Design Center About A/C Duct Cleaning There are several companies out there that offer $49 Air Conditioning Duct cleaning. The majority of these companies have a D or an F rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). IRCC does not recommend these companies for use. The following excerpts come directly from the BBB concerning these companies: “BBB has received a pattern of complaints from consumers alleging that they hired the business for duct/vent cleaning services that were advertised at a special rate (usually $49.95). Consumers alleged that during the service call, the business represented that the consumers had a severe mold and sold mold remediation services ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars. Some consumers also stated that they received a 2nd opinion and no Kathy Stilton mold was found to be present in their homes.” And “Our file contains a pattern of complaints from consumers who state they have contracted with this company in response to advertisements or phone solicitations for air duct cleaning services ranging from $25 for a whole house cleaning to $39 for up to five vents and $7 for each additional vent. At the time of service consumers feel they are lead to believe they have a serious mold problem and it will take hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars to have the mold removed. Consumers have reported they are (Continued on pg. 4) October 2013 Indian River Colony Club 3 (Design Center con’t.) charged additional fees for treatments, inhibitors, electrostatic filters and ultra violet lights.” And finally, “Some consumers report they are sold electrostatic or flex filters ranging from $125 to $150 with a promised delivery within 4-6 weeks; however, the filters are never delivered. Others report they have paid over $600 for an ultra violet light to assist in warding off mold growth; however, the ultra violet bulbs only last a few weeks to a few months and the company will not assist with replacements.” A few company names on this list include; Air Care, VacuVent, Clean Air by Design, American Air, Inc., Environmental Cleaning & Restoration, Inc., Enviroclean, and Advanced Restoration Services. It is the opinion of IRCC that these companies are not providing the service consumers are requesting. Even if you are not duped into purchasing the up-sells they attempt to sell you, it is highly questionable that consumers are getting a quality job for the $49. If you are interested in having your AC ducts cleaned, please refer to a licensed A/C company. Charges from a reputable company are approximately $35 per vent, but for the additional cost you will get what you pay for. The IRCC approved contractor list has two reputable companies listed for use. Remember “The sweet smell of low price is soon smothered by the bitter taste of poor quality.”

How to Dispose of Medicines Properly DON’T: Flush expired or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs down the toilet or drain unless the label or accompanying patient information specifically instructs you to do so. DO: Return unwanted or expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs to a drug take-back program or follow the steps for household disposal found at the end of this article. To dispose of prescription and over-the-counter drugs your easiest choice would be participating in the Drug Take Back Program. You can drop your drugs off at any Brevard County Sheriff’s Office to be properly disposed of any time. Nancy Parsons Proper disposal protects you and the Earth by preventing poisoning of children and pets, deterring misuse by teenagers and adults, avoiding health problems from taking the wrong medicine or medicine that is too old to work well, and by keeping medicines from entering streams and rivers when poured down the drain or flushed down the toilet. In towns where residences are connected to wastewater treatment plants, drugs can pass through the treatment system, and may flow downstream to serve as sources for community drinking water. Treatment plants are generally not equipped to routinely remove medicines. Another option is to take drugs out of the original container, mix with an undesirable substance, such as cat litter or used coffee grounds, and put the mixture into a disposable container before placing it in the trash. And, of course, remove all personal information from the empty container to protect your identity. For more information go to http://water.epa.gov/scitech/swguidance/ppcp/upload/ppcpflyer.pdf

IRCC Chapel Program c Larry Adams c

We’re seeing some new faces in Chapel which reminds us that all are welcome to worship with us on Sunday mornings at 1030 in Colony Hall. Soon our snowbirds will be coming home with interesting stories of how their summer was spent and we can catch them up on what they might have missed. We are frequently reminded that we have an aging population here in IRCC. True, but that doesn’t mean that we are “old”. The late Norman Vincent Peale said, “There is one certain way to decide whether you are old. What is your attitude when you arise in the morning? The person who is young awakens with a strange feeling of excitement, a feeling which he may not be able to explain but which is as if to say...This is a great day; this is the day on which wonderful things will happen. The individual who is old, regardless of age, arises with the spirit unresponsive, not expecting any great thing to happen. This day will be just about like the rest. The person may hope it will be no worse.” Here in IRCC, most people retain the spirit of expectation at three score and ten or four score and ten. The measure of one’s age is actually how well he or she retains the romance and excitement of youth. Remember Pastors Frank Tantillo and Bill Otis are available to visit sick folks. Their phone numbers are in the IRCC directory.

If you haven’t already made reservations for the CBP full production of “Last Chance Romance” (featured on this month’s cover), there is still time to give Robbie a call. This delightful romantic comedy about a mature couple seeking their first romance and encountering humorous twists and turns along the way is being directed by Patsy Wyatt. The play will run from October 23rd through the 26th in Colony Hall. There will be two luncheon matinees -- October 23rd and 24th, and two evening dinner shows -- October 25th and 26th. By now everyone should have received a flier in their white box providing details on times and menu selections. At the time this article was going to press, the Colony Clowns were gearing up for their next public appearance – the Air Force Wives Luncheon on September 21st. The Clowns enjoy their work and feel privileged to be invited to entertain at this event. Two of the group’s original clowns, Betty Craven and Skip Taylor, have rejoined the group. Good to have them back. As indicated in a previous issue, the play selected for the February 20 – 23, 2014 full production is “Mister Guy”, which will be directed by Natalie Hofmaster. Cast Call for the play has now taken place, and the actual roles were in the process of being assigned as this article was going to press. This promises to be a wonderful play. 10 October 2013 Indian River Colony Club 10 Notes to Residents To my dear friends,

I want to thank you all for standing by my side while I have kind of fallen apart. I appreciate all of the prayers, flowers, notes and e-mails of encouragement, offers to make soup, drivers to take me to appointments and just being my friend. I hope to be out and about very soon. I have missed being with you all very much. Sincerely, Carole Patterson

We would like to express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all of our friends at IRCC for your incredible outpouring of prayers and cards for Toni during her hospitalization and to all of us as she died. Although our loss is great, these wonderful gestures have been a tremendous comfort to us all. As Father Brad said in his homily, St. Peter has a new member to star in his acting troupe. And as stated on Toni’s holy card: “Grieve not nor speak of me with tears…but as though I were beside you…I loved you so…’twas Heaven here with you. Thank you all so very much Russ and Mark Pells; Tina and Claude Johnson

Thanks to all our wonderful friends for the many cards, food, and flowers upon the death of Betty. She was a wonderful wife and mother to our children. Betty will forever be in the memories of everyone who knew her. Her great smile and wit was enjoyed by all. Again it shows that IRCC is the greatest place to live. Thank you very much! Family Promise of Brevard Inc. Begins Operations c Dana King c

Family Promise of Brevard, Inc. began operations in September 2013, thanks to many volunteers, many of whom are members of IRCC! FPOB is a non-profit organization that helps to keeping homeless families together as a unit, providing them temporary shelter and meals through an interfaith network of congregations, and assisting them in obtaining human services, permanent employment, and safe affordable housing, so they can achieve self-sufficiency and lasting independence. Eighteen local church congregations are involved in providing temporary shelter for homeless families in Brevard County. Each church rotates hosting a family for one week at a time, four times a year to also provide meals and hospitality. Local social service agencies help find jobs, permanent housing and other services in order for them to achieve lasting independence. Family Promise of Brevard Inc. is funded solely by donations, grants, and in-kind gifts. The upcoming 2nd Annual Family Promise of Brevard Golf Tournament is the largest fundraiser, held here at IRCC. The Golf Scramble is happening on Saturday, October 19, with 7:30 check in for an 8:30 start time. For information on how you can participate, please call Jeanne Ulander at 255-0944 or Ray King at 514-7274.

Residents Man of Annapolis by: Joyce Wilden -Buzz Biz PR Robert Watts was born in Brooklyn, NYC in 1951. A family move to the “countryside” of Long Island meant open spaces and rural fun. The athletic teenager played football, ran track and got good marks at Farmingdale High School. He also met a pretty girl named Karen, but with his sights set on the sea, he entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1969. First, the young midshipman considered submarine service. But the creaking, compressed hull unnerved him. Flights in a single engine prop trainer, jet and helicopter in Pensacola, however, focused him on becoming a naval aviator. He entered Naval Aviation Flight Training after graduation and earned the coveted “Wings of Gold” in 1975. Childhood sweethearts, Robert and Karen married and had two children. In 32 years, Robert served in squadrons and ships in San Diego, Norfolk and Pensacola, deploying to the Pacific and Mediterranean. He was a flight instructor, vertical replenishment pilot (replenishing ships by helicopter) and search and rescue pilot. The first African-American to command a Navy helicopter squadron, Robert was also Commodore of the large Naval Aviation Training Air Wing FIVE. His career focus shifted to education and he earned a Masters of Science in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. His final assignment was commanding the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI) at Patrick Air Force Base. Captain Watts retired in 2005 to become the Commandant of New York Military Academy. A 2009 IRCC “Get-Away Weekend” resulted in a quick purchase decision for Robert and Karen, who were impressed with the maintenance program. They considered part-time residency, but another cold New York winter soon had them packing for Florida. Robert joined the local chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, currently serving as Second Vice President. The busy independent travel consultant also serves as Grants Manager for the Robert Watts retired in 2005 after 32 years Community Foundation for Brevard and on the IRCC Board of Directors. About of service, shown here with wife Karen and the community, Robert notes, “Karen and I truly believe it is great place to live.” their two children.

18 October 2013 Indian River Colony Club The Women of IRCC: Billie Eitel by: Audrey Krienen

Billie was born in New York City during the time her father was finishing his medical internship. The family was hoping Billy would arrive, but Billie Ann arrived to join her two older sisters. The family moved around the country because it was depression time and to accommodate her Flight Surgeon father’s career. Moving from school to school many times, she was always able to find an interesting theatre group, art group or summer stock to express her natural artistic talents. At sixteen she was chosen State of Michigan “Miss Water Ski” and valedictorian at a school where she had been a relatively recently moved pupil. When it was time for college they were still living in Michigan so she enrolled at the Michigan State University and chose English, French and Drama as her majors. In her sophomore year she met Paul Eitel and they married in their junior year. They both enjoyed life and their common interests and were later blessed with four children. Billie was very involved volunteering in political affairs and as a family became very active in bike riding, long before it became popular sport. Paul had always been an avid sailor and Billie went along with his interest, in spite of being subject to motion sickness. Living in California they both became very active in the California Yacht Club at Marina Del Rey and later the Santa Barbara Yacht Club and the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. When their children were in their teens Billie decided “it is time for a change, time for me to do something that was a real interest to me, so I enrolled in an interior design course, with an intense course in commercial design.” She was very successfully and able to have wealthy clients who also had yachts and they requested her help in interior design for their boats. At that time Billie and Paul were living full time in their fifty-eight foot Hatteras Long Range Cruiser, moored at Santa Barbara harbor. Transition to becoming an expert for yachts and pleasure boats was a natural move. Decorating a boat moored in a harbor for full time living can be very different from decorating a home overlooking the harbor. Many conditions are different and space always at a premium but it is similar to a condo with its own special comforts and you can always start the motor and go to far away places. After twenty-one years living on their yachts, they were both beginning to think that it was time to consider moving to a land property. They visited one of her sisters in Melbourne, and friends who lived in IRCC. Together they decided IRCC had much to offer. They visited only a few homes, as few were available but later decided which one was the place for them. Billie and Paul are both very happy with their move. Billie is very talented in theatre and makes a tremendous contribution to IRCC theatre productions and freely gives her time to decorating projects within the community. The Eitel’s have recently purchased their tenth boat and look forward to enjoying the many waterways in Florida, with friends and family.
