Epipactis Helleborine (Orchidaceae) Niche Conservatism and the Future Potential Range of Epipactis helleborine (Orchidaceae) Marta Kolanowska* Department of Plant Taxonomy and Nature Conservation, University of Gdan´sk, Gdan´sk, Poland Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the current distribution of suitable niches for the invasive orchid species, Epipactis helleborine, and to estimate the possibility of its further expansion. Moreover, niche modeling tools were used to explain its rapid expansion in North America and to test the niche conservatism of the species. The maximum entropy method was used to create models of the suitable niche distribution. A database of E. helleborine localities was prepared based on the examination of herbarium specimens, information from electronic databases as well as data gathered during field works. The differences between the niches occupied by native and invasive populations were evaluated using the niche overlap and niche identity test indexes. Moreover, the coverage of the most suitable habitats for the species was measured for three future scenarios as well as for the present time model. Populations of E. helleborine occupy North American west coast habitats very similar to those preferred by native, Eurasian populations, while the expansion in the east coast is related to the niche shift. The created models of suitable niche distribution indicate that the species does not realize its potential niche in the native range. The total surface of the habitats potentially available for E. helleborine will decrease in all climate change scenarios created for 2080. The Annex to this document has been prepared by UNEP-WCMC. 2. In accordance with paragraphs b) and c) of the section Selection of species to be reviewed in Resolution Conf. 12.8 on Review of Significant Trade in specimens of Appendix-II species, the Plants Committee should select for its review species of priority concern. The selection should be based on recorded trade levels and information available to the Plants Committee, the Secretariat, Parties or other relevant experts. 3. Gann, Chief Conservation Strategist The Institute for Regional Conservation 100 East Linton Boulevard, Suite 302B Delray Beach, Florida 33483 Submitted to Jimi Sadle, Botanist Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Parks Executive Summary This document compiles and summarizes existing published and unpublished literature, collection records and observational data on rare plant species that are currently or were previously reported as naturally occurring in Everglades National Park (EVER). It also serves as a framework for implementing National Park Service policy concerning the management of threatened and endangered species and other species of special management concern, identified herein as vascular plant Species of Management Concern (SOMCs). This document provides a baseline list of plant SOMCs that are a known part of the EVER flora, historically and in the present. Because of the overwhelming number of rare vascular plant species protected in EVER, the intent of this report is to use the SOMC designation to focus attention and resources on the most vulnerable plants in the region and those species of regulatory interest to the federal government. However, gaps in knowledge and vulnerabilities of other rare plants not designated as SOMCs are also discussed. A review of the entire native flora of Everglades National Park (762 taxa) is presented, divided into ten logical groups (e.g., trees, ferns, graminoids). Areas of special geographic interest for each group are indicated (e.g., a special concentration of species limited to the Long Pine Key area) as well as the general distribution of rare plants within EVER for each group.
