I was extremely privileged that His Royal Highness was able to attend my Mayor’s ball in May 2013 at Guards Polo Club. His Royal Highness made it an incredibly special evening, as he took time to speak to the three school choirs, including the choir from St Mary’s School Ascot, and all our guests. With His Royal Highness The Prince Philip’s help, we raised a lot of money for The Prince Philip Trust Fund that night. Chairman and Treasurer's Report In Rupert’s absence Peter reported that Middleton Cheney is holding a photographic exhibition on Saturday 19th July from 2pm to 4.30pm in All Saints Church, entitled “The Village – Then and Now”. There will be about 50 photos of Middleton Cheney taken between 1900 and 1930, accompanied by photos of the same view taken today. 2. Royal Mistresses Roger Powell The talk covers the period from 1509 to the present day, and concentrates on people who were royal mistresses for at least ten years. Indeed one was a mistress for 36 years. In many cases from a psychological point of view she was not just an object of desire but she more or less became a second wife, and sometimes even a mother to the king. The origin of the role in the early days of the Middle Ages derives from the many loveless royal marriages, as for kings the main reason for a marriage was to secure or maintain an alliance to build his empire or strengthen his position against enemies. Once a queen had given the king one or two heirs, he would forget or even abandon her and take a mistress. In England a royal mistress did not become a feature of court society until the 17th century. In France they had been around in the mid-1600s, but it took a while before England followed suit.

Peasants did a set amount of work for the local lord as well as work- ing the land to support themselves and their family. If they did not work for the lord the lord could take away their land. ‘Ceorls’ peasants were free to go work for another lord if they wanted to. Slaves 10% of Anglo-Saxons were slaves. Slaves could be bought and sold, and treated more like property than people. The Normans thought that owning slaves was barbaric, but it was a normal part of Anglo-Saxon life. Thegns Thegns were local lords, there were between 4,000 and 5000 Thegns. Thegns was an important man in the local community and lived in a manor house with a separate church. The relation- ship between the king and his earls was based on loyalty. The king trusted the earl more he would give him greater re- wards. However, sometimes the earls challenged the king to get more power. The Power of the English Monarchy The king’s role was to protect his people from attack and give them laws to maintain safety and security at home. In return, the people of England owed him service. Every boy swore an oath when he reached the age of 12 to be faithful to the king.

No official account of her long public life, from 1914 to 1965, has been written and published since 1922, when the princess was aged twenty-five, and about to be married. The only daughter of King George V, she was one of the chief protagonists in his plans to include his children in his efforts to engage the monarchy, and the royal family, more deeply and closely with the people of the United Kingdom. This was a time when women were striving to enter public life more fully, a role hitherto denied to them. The king’s decision was largely prompted by the sacrifices of so many during the First World War; the fall of Czar Nicholas of Russia; the growth of socialism; and the dangers these events may present to the longevity of the monarchy in a disaffected kingdom. Princess Mary’s public life helps to answer the question of what role royal women, then and in the future, are able to play in support of the monarchy. It was a time when for the most part careers of any kind were not open to women, royal or otherwise, and the majority had yet to gain the right to vote.
