Summary of the Perlesvaus or The High History of the Grail (probably first decade of 13th century, certainly before 1225, author unknown). Survives in 3 manuscripts, 2 partial copies, and one early print edition Percival starts out as the young adventurous knight who did not fulfill his destiny of achieving the Holy Grail because he failed to ask the Fisher King the question that would heal him, events related in Chrétien's work. The author soon digresses into the adventures of knights like Lancelot and Gawain, many of which have no analogue in other Arthurian literature. Often events and depictions of characters in the Perlesvaus differ greatly from other versions of the story. For instance, while later literature depicts Loholt as a good knight and illegitimate son of King Arthur, in Perlesvaus he is apparently the legitimate son of Arthur and Guinevere, and he is slain treacherously by Arthur's seneschal Kay, who is elsewhere portrayed as a boor and a braggart but always as Arthur's loyal servant (and often, foster brother. Kay is jealous when Loholt kills a giant, so he murders him to take the credit. This backfires when Loholt's head is sent to Arthur's court in a box that can only be opened by his murderer. Kay is banished, and joins with Arthur's enemies, Brian of the Isles and Meliant. Guinevere expires upon seeing her son dead, which alters Arthur and Lancelot's actions substantially from what is found in later works. Though its plot is frequently at variance with the standard Arthurian outline, Perlesvaus did have an effect on subsequent literature. -

King Arthur remains a hero of legend in the annals of the British Isles. However, one question remains: did King Arthur actually exist? Early medieval historical sources provide clues that have identified various figures that may have been the template for King Arthur. Such candidates such as the second century Roman general Lucius Artorius Castus, the fifth century Breton leader Riothamus, and the sixth century British leader Ambrosius Aurelianus hold high esteem as possible candidates for the historical King Arthur. Through the analysis of original sources and authors such as the Easter Annals, Nennius, Bede, Gildas, and the Annales Cambriae, parallels can be established which connect these historical figures to aspects of the Arthur of literary tradition. -

Faculty of Arts English and German Philology and Translation & Interpretation COMPARATIVE LITERATURE: RELIGION AND RELIGIOUS SYMBOLISM IN THE TALE OF THE GRAIL BY THREE AUTHORS by ASIER LANCHO DIEGO DEGREE IN ENGLISH STUDIES TUTOR: CRISTINA JARILLOT RODAL JUNE 2017 ABSTRACT: The myth of the Grail has long been recognised as the cornerstone of Arthurian literature. Many studies have been conducted on the subject of Christian symbolism in the major Grail romances. However, the aim of the present paper is to prove that the 15th-century “Tale of the Sangrail”, found in Le Morte d’Arthur, by Thomas Malory, presents a greater degree of Christian coloration than 12th-century Chrétien de Troyes’ Perceval and Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzival. In order to evaluate this claim, the origin and function of the main elements at the Grail Ceremony were compared in the first place. Secondly, the main characters’ roles were examined to determine variations concerning religious beliefs and overall character development. The findings demonstrated that the main elements at the Grail Ceremony in Thomas Malory’s “The Tale of the Sangrail” are more closely linked to Christian motifs and that Perceval’s psychological development in the same work conflicts with that of a stereotypical Bildungsroman, in contrast with the previous 12th-century versions of the tale. Ahmed 1 Sarin Taslima Ahmed College Writing II: Writing and Literary Study Spring 2010 The Chivalrous Sir Gawain If a man does not open the door for a woman, she may think chivalry is dead or forget that it ever existed at all. Today's woman is not a damsel in distress, but rather stands on equal ground with her masculine counterpart. She has no need to acknowledge that there was ever a time when men lived and died for the sake of honor. However, around 1066 a.d. to 1485 a.d., that was exactly what European knights, and those around the world, did (Achlin). Of these brave soldiers, the most famous were the Knights of the Round Table, subjects of Camelot and King Arthur. Perhaps the most acclaimed knights are dubbed Sir Lancelot and Sir Gawain. Lancelot is still known as the greatest of all knights, the perfect knight, but based on Gawain's actions in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by the Pearl Poet and those of Lancelot in The Once and Future King by T.H. White, I've come to the conclusion that Gawain is a greater model of chivalry than Lancelot. Following the code of chivalry, Gawain is faithful to God, his King, and he is respectful to women. Lancelot is very talented, but he does not feel the need to follow the laws of knighthood, and ends up disregarding King Arthur, Queen Guinevere and even God because of it. "Two virtues above all else were held to mark the good knight and bring him honor. -

There were apologies from Rupert Clark due to work commitments 1. Chairman and Treasurer's Report In Rupert’s absence Peter reported that Middleton Cheney is holding a photographic exhibition on Saturday 19th July from 2pm to 4.30pm in All Saints Church, entitled “The Village – Then and Now”. There will be about 50 photos of Middleton Cheney taken between 1900 and 1930, accompanied by photos of the same view taken today. 2. Royal Mistresses Roger Powell The talk covers the period from 1509 to the present day, and concentrates on people who were royal mistresses for at least ten years. Indeed one was a mistress for 36 years. In many cases from a psychological point of view she was not just an object of desire but she more or less became a second wife, and sometimes even a mother to the king. The origin of the role in the early days of the Middle Ages derives from the many loveless royal marriages, as for kings the main reason for a marriage was to secure or maintain an alliance to build his empire or strengthen his position against enemies. Once a queen had given the king one or two heirs, he would forget or even abandon her and take a mistress. In England a royal mistress did not become a feature of court society until the 17th century. In France they had been around in the mid-1600s, but it took a while before England followed suit. -
The Book of Quests
THE BOOK OF QUESTS uests are the driving force in the life of every noble Knight. So it should Qbe no surprise to find Quests at the very heart of Shadows over Camelot. While the content of the Rules Booklet should be familiar to every aspiring Knight, the Book of Quests is primarily a reference, written for inquisitive Knights in search of insight, or the scheming Traitor looking for a lethal edge. In the back of this book you will find two appendices. The first, unearthed from , old manuscripts, offers a glimpse of each Knight s personality. The second is a detailed manifest of each card used in the game. In this booklet, page numbers given in reference point to the corresponding entries in the Rules booklet, unless indicated otherwise. nnnnnnnnnn THE QUESTS nnnnnnnnnn There are several “Standard” Quests in Camelot’s immediate vicinity: N The Tournament against the Black Knight N The Quest for Lancelot N The Dragon’s Quest N The Quest for Excalibur N The Quest for the Holy Grail N The Pict and Saxon Wars each with its own entry in the Book of Quests. For each Quest won or lost, new Swords are laid onto the Round Table. As the game progresses, the Swords show which side currently has the advantage. There are also two “Special” Quests within Camelot proper, where a defeat spells immediate doom for the Loyal Knights: • The Siege of Camelot, which is lost if 12 Siege Engines ever surround Camelot; • and The Quest of the Round Table, where the outcome of the game is decided in favor of whichever color Swords have the majority, once 12 or more have been laid down.
