Dear Friend of International Medical Corps, As International Medical Corps approaches the quarter century milestone of delivering life- saving emergency programs around the globe, we look back at 2007 with great pride in our achievements: helping millions of people in the 25 countries and regions where we operate to recover from crisis and live healthier, more productive lives. Yet the challenges to providing health care through training remain significant. Existing conflicts intensified this past year across Africa, in places like Sudan, Chad, and the Central African Republic, as well as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia. And at the end of the year, violence erupted in once-stable Kenya, reverberating throughout the region. The ongoing conflict in Iraq has devastated its population and health care system and forced massive displacement, putting severe strain on neighboring Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Meantime, countries like Indonesia and Myanmar suffered from natural disasters including floods and repeated earthquakes. Despite operating in such difficult and dangerous environments, International Medical Corps’ dedicated staff and volunteers responded rapidly and effectively in delivering emergency and long-term assistance, working with local communities to rebuild their health care systems, long after the emergency phase has ended, to help individuals and communities get back on their feet.

As 2009 came to a close, International Medical Corps was marking 25 years of delivering critically needed health care and training in some 25 countries throughout Africa, Asia and the Middle East. In places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Indonesia, Darfur and the Democratic Republic of Congo, our staff of nearly 4,000, along with thousands of volunteers, provided emergency relief while distressed communities recover and become self-reliant. At the very outset of 2010, as we delivered programs serving nearly 12 million people around the world, a new catastrophe struck: an earthquake in Haiti that would last just 45 seconds, but would claim the lives of approximately 230,000 people and displace more than a million others. As we have during so many other emergencies, International Medical Corps responded immediately and effectively to this disaster - and always maintaining a focus on our mission of training local people, addressing their long-term needs and helping them reclaim their lives with dignity and hope.

Americans for the Arts in partnership with the Sundance Preserve launched the first National Arts Policy Roundtable in October 2006. Each year the Roundtable brings together high level public and private sector leaders in dialogue on issues critical to advancing American culture and society.     Contributors Rabbi Lee Bycel is the spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Shalom in Napa, California. He is also an adjunct professor of Jewish Studies and Social Justice at the University of San Francisco as well as a senior mod- erator at the Aspen Institute. For over fifteen years, he served as dean of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Los Angeles, including as director of the rabbinic school. Since 2004 he has made several humanitarian trips to Darfur refugee camps and has raised major funding for medical and emergency aid for the refugee community. Rabbi Kenneth Chasen is senior rabbi of Leo Baeck Temple in Los Angeles and an outspoken commentator and author on a wide variety of subjects pertaining to Jewish life, with a special emphasis on social justice in the United States and in Israel. His writings have appeared in a wide variety of books and national and international publications, including the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Reform Judaism, and Jewish Journal, among many others. Rabbi Chasen is also the co-author of two books that guide Jewish families in the creation of meaningful Jewish rituals in the home. In addition, he is a nationally recognized composer whose original liturgical and educational works are regularly heard in synagogues, religious schools, Jewish camps, and sanctuaries across North America and in Israel. Rabbi Micah Citrin grew up at Congregation Albert in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
