VICTOR T.C. SMITH, B.A. INTRODUCTION This is the third report of the Kent Defence Research Group of the Kent Archaeological Society. In the writer's paper 'The Artillery Defences at Gravesend', (Arch. Cant., Ixxxix (1974), 143) mention was made of Milton Blockhouse, one of five artillery blockhouses erected by Henry VIII to defend the Thames against a hostile fleet. It was suggested that this blockhouse had probably been built on a site at what is now the north-eastern corner of the Canal Basin, Gravesend (N.G.R. TQ 655743). Preliminary trenching in that area during 1973 had led to the discovery of substantial chalk foundations. Subsequently, addi- tional documentary research was undertaken and with the assistance of grants kindly given by the Gravesend Historical Society and the Kent Archaeological Society, and with the co-operation of the Gravesham Borough Council, further excavations under the writer's direction were carried out by the Kent Defence Research Group at intervals during 1974-8. The purpose of the excavations was to verify identification and to recover a basic plan which could be com- pared with the D-shaped Gravesend and Tilbury blockhouses, the plans of which were the only ones previously known of the five Thames blockhouses. This report sets out the documentary evidence and describes and discusses the results of the excavation. Yarmouth Castle, from the harbour. 1791 Samuel Howitt IWCMS.2002.94 Yarmouth’s twelve-gun castle was the last and most sophisticated addition to Henry VIII's coastal defences. Completed after his death in 1547, this stone artillery fortress was built with no central tower. The main rectangular block has a square battery to the front and the first new-style 'arrowhead' artillery bastion built in England on the exposed angle. ROBINS, F.S.A. •*•• [Hurst Castle : Bus from Bournemouth or Lymington to Milford-on-Sea> Walk from Milford to Keyhaven, about 1£ miles, thence walk or ferry to Hurst Castle ; or walk along beach from Milford, about 3 miles.] 541 : for ten years or more a " cold war " had been on between Henry VIII and the Pope, arising from the divorce of Catherine 1 of Aragon. In the meantime, Henry had married Anne Boleyn and had her executed, Jane Seymour had died after giving birth to the future Edward VI, Anne of Cleves had been divorced, and Thomas Cromwell disgraced and executed. With the Emperor Charles V and King Francis I of France reconciled, and Henry no longer able to play one off against the other, 1066 seemed likely to repeat itself, with the Papal blessing on an invasion of England from the opposite side of the Channel. In 1536 the French had actually cut out a Flemish ship from Southampton and another ship from Portsmouth, and in 1538 a French crew boarded an English ship anchored off the Isle of Wight. Following the suppression of the lesser monasteries in 1536, the greater ones were dissolved in 1539. Some of their buildings were handed over to favourites at Court, some of the great monastic churches, such as Winchester, Canterbury and Gloucester, were preserved as cathe drals, some, like Christchurch Priory and Romsey Abbey, became parish churches, others such as Beaulieu, Netley, Tintern and many others lay derelict and empty, a fate which seemed to have peculiarly affected the Cistercian houses, probably because of their siting in the remote countryside.

ADAPTING TO COASTAL FLOODING in the YARMOUTH AREA in the 21st CENTURY A Report by Yarmouth Coastal Defence Working Group December 2010 Adapting to Coastal Flooding in the Yarmouth Area in the 21st Century ADAPTING TO COASTAL FLOODING in the st YARMOUTH AREA in the 21 CENTURY A Report by Yarmouth Coastal Defence Working Group December 2010 SUMMARY Much of the town of Yarmouth and the surrounding area lie only a couple of metres above mean sea level. Every twenty years or so the coincidence of a Storm Surge with a high Spring Tide brings the sea over the harbour wall and causes flooding. To date the effects of such flooding have been minor but, with sea level predicted to rise at increasing rates in the coming century, flooding will become more serious and more frequent. This Report, prepared by a local working group, assesses the increasing impact that flooding is likely to have as the 21st Century progresses. It outlines the scientific basis for concern and attempts to identify the local assets at risk from flooding. Possible options for coastal defence in the future are suggested and approximate costs are estimated. At this stage no particular expenditure is advocated. Competition for funding will be intense for both Yarmouth within the Isle of Wight Council‟s strategy and for the Island within the national context. Ongoing research into rising sea levels will clarify the situation and determine what and when specific coastal defence projects will be required. The purpose of the Report is to raise the issues for discussion with policy makers and the local community.

Artillery Defences Introductions to Heritage Assets Summary Historic England’s Introductions to Heritage Assets (IHAs) are accessible, authoritative, illustrated summaries of what we know about specific types of archaeological site, building, landscape or marine asset. Typically they deal with subjects which have previously lacked such a published summary, either because the literature is dauntingly voluminous, or alternatively where little has been written. Most often it is the latter, and many IHAs bring understanding of site or building types which are neglected or little understood. This IHA provides an introduction to several types of defences used in England to protect against gunpowder artillery. The information that follows covers the history and development of these sites, including prominent examples. A summary of the academic interest in the asset type is also included which outlines the research which has been undertaken for each type of artillery defence. The vast majority of English permanent artillery defences are coastal and have direct geographical associations with the places they were designed to protect, such as river mouths, harbours, naval dockyards, and more rarely towns This document has been prepared by Wayne Cocroft and edited by Joe Flatman and Pete Herring.
